Multiplexed temporal coding of electric communication signals in mormyrid fishes.

The coding of stimulus information into patterns of spike times occurs widely in sensory systems. Determining how temporally coded information is decoded by central neurons is essential to understanding how brains process sensory stimuli. Mormyrid weakly electric fishes are experts at time coding, making them an exemplary organism for addressing this question. Mormyrids generate brief, stereotyped electric pulses. Pulse waveform carries information about sender identity, and it is encoded into submillisecond-to-millisecond differences in spike timing between receptors. Mormyrids vary the time

Optical singularity protractor for rotating metrology with neuromorphic sensing.

The development of singular optics and vortex beams has facilitated numerous novel optical applications, with optical sensing being one prominent direction. By leveraging the rotational energy flow properties of vortex beams, rotational Doppler effect-based sensing for rotating objects has achieved significant progress. However, due to fundamental constraints of orbital angular momentum (OAM) and interferometry-based experimental methods, rotational Doppler sensing typically requires stringent axial alignment (single-point or multi-point) in practical scenarios, which limits their applicabilit

Behavioral Thermoceptive Responses and Morphologic Correlates in Mouse Models of CMT1A, HNPP, and Aging.

BACKGROUND: Thermoceptive dysfunction is a frequent but understudied feature of peripheral neuropathies and aging. Patients often report abnormal heat perception, yet the underlying sensory mechanisms remain unclear. This study evaluated thermoceptive behavior and corresponding structural changes in mouse models of inherited dysmyelinating neuropathy and natural aging to identify shared and divergent mechanisms. METHODS: Thermal preference was assessed using a user-independent gradient apparatus spanning physiological to noxious temperatures, with automated quantification of time in zone, dis

Temporal deep neural network for tactile sensing in artificial finger pulp skin.

Tactile perception plays a vital role in artificial finger pulp skin, especially in regions responsible for grasping and touching tasks, where precise sensing of deformation position and applied force is critical. Conventional demodulation methods often fail to fully leverage temporal correlations in data during the pressing process, limiting the accuracy of tactile demodulation. To address this, we propose a tactile sensing system based on quasi-distributed Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) integrated into artificial finger pulp skin, along with a two-stage hybrid LSTM-Transformer neural network (T

Similar Computational Hierarchies for Reading and Speech in the Occipital Cortex of Sighed and Blind: Converging Evidence from fMRI and Chronometric TMS.

High-level perception results from interactions between hierarchical brain systems responsive to gradually increasing feature complexities. During reading, the initial evaluation of simple visual features in the early visual cortex (EVC) is followed by orthographic and lexical computations in the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOTC). While similar visual regions are engaged in tactile Braille reading in congenitally blind people, it is unclear whether the visual network maintains or reorganizes its hierarchy for reading in this population. Combining fMRI and chronometric transcranial magneti

Perspectives of People Living With Chronic Hepatitis D: Impact of Disease and Unmet Needs Along the Care Cascade.

Hepatitis D virus leads to a severe form of viral hepatitis and affects nearly 5% of people living with chronic hepatitis B. Chronic infection with hepatitis D virus leads to more rapid progression to cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and ultimately liver disease-related death compared with hepatitis B monoinfection. Health outcomes and treatment adherence can be affected by patient perception of, engagement in, and satisfaction with care. Our objective was to better understand the experiences of people with chronic hepatitis D, identify their preferred sources of information, and recognise

Combining FES and Exoskeletons in a Hybrid Haptic System for Enhancing VR Experience.

Robotic technology and functional electrical stimulation (FES) have emerged as highly effective rehabilitative techniques for individuals with neuromuscular diseases, showcasting their ability to restore motor functions. Within the proposed study, we developed and tested a new hybrid controller combining an upper-limb exoskeleton with FES to enhance haptic feedback when performing task-oriented and bimanual movement, like pick-and-place, in a virtual environment. We investigated the performance of the proposed approach on eight unimpaired participants providing haptic feedback either only by t

Predicting the presence of tinnitus using ecological momentary assessments.

Mobile applications have gained popularity in healthcare in recent years. These applications are an increasingly important pillar of public health care, as they open up new possibilities for data collection and can lead to new insights into various diseases and disorders thanks to modern data analysis approaches. In this context, Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is a commonly used research method that aims to assess phenomena with a focus on ecological validity and to help both the user and the researcher observe these phenomena over time. One phenomenon that benefits from this capability

Rapid structural remodeling of peripheral taste neurons is independent of taste cell turnover.

Taste bud cells are constantly replaced in taste buds as old cells die and new cells migrate into the bud. The perception of taste relies on new taste bud cells integrating with existing neural circuitry, yet how these new cells connect with a taste ganglion neuron is unknown. Do taste ganglion neurons remodel to accommodate taste bud cell renewal? If so, how much of the structure of taste axons is fixed and how much remodels? Here, we measured the motility and branching of individual taste arbors (the portion of the axon innervating taste buds) in mice over time with two-photon in vivo micros

Multimodal Agility-Based Exercise Training for Persons With Multiple Sclerosis: A New Framework.

INTRODUCTION: Multimodal agility-based exercise training (MAT) has been described as a framework for fall prevention in the elderly but might also be a valuable concept for exercise training in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS). THE PROBLEM: Current recommendations advise pwMS to perform a multitude of different exercise training activities, as each of these has its separate evidence. However, pwMS struggle even more than the general population to be physically active. Additionally, Multiple Sclerosis often leads to co-occurring mobility and cognitive dysfunctions, for which simultaneous

Use of Assessment Tools in Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy-Results of An Anonymized Survey Among Indian Spine Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is the commonest cause of cervical myelopathy. It contributes to high morbidity and consequent economic burden for society. Many measurement tools have been devised to quantify the disease severity, assist in decision-making, and to evaluate the outcome of surgical intervention. OBJECTIVE: Most of the assessment scales are used for research purposes only and rarely in clinical practice. The purpose of this survey was to check the awareness of spine surgeons about these assessment scales and their role in the management of patients with CSM. M

Context Memory Encoding and Retrieval Temporal Dynamics are Modulated by Attention across the Adult Lifespan.

Episodic memories are multidimensional, including simple and complex features. How we successful encode and recover these features in time, whether these temporal dynamics are preserved across age, even under conditions of reduced memory performance, and the role of attention on these temporal dynamics is unknown. In the current study, we applied time-resolved multivariate decoding to oscillatory electroencephalography (EEG) in an adult lifespan sample to investigate the temporal order of successful encoding and recognition of simple and complex perceptual context features. At encoding, partic

Three-Dimensional versus 2-Dimensional Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy: Surgical Results of a Preliminary Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3-D) endoscopes have been widely used for a large variety of approaches in neurosurgical practice. However, in the last decade, 3-D scopes were barely used for ventricular surgery. In this study, we illustrated our preliminary experience with a 3-D endoscope for third ventriculostomy using new dedicated endoscopic equipment. METHODS: Over a 12-month period, a high-definition 3-D endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) was performed in 14 patients with obstructive hydrocephalus. Patients were followed prospectively and compared retrospectively with a matched group

Cathodal tDCS increases stop-signal reaction time.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive method of modulating human brain activity and potentially alters performance in cognitive tasks. Often it is assumed that effects of tDCS modulation depend on the polarity-anodal stimulation typically boost cognitive processes whereas cathodal stimulation hampers them. While most tDCS research focusses on the effects of anodal stimulation, cathodal tDCS effects are underexplored. In the present study, cathodal tDCS over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) was used to potentially hamper the response inhibition process
