Os acromiale (OA) results from a failure of consolidation between the ossification centers of the acromial epiphysis. Its prevalence and its interactions with ancestry, gender, laterality, and side have been variously reported in the literature. The aims of this review are to provide an accurate estimate of OA prevalence and to investigate its association with other variables in an attempt to comprehend its etiology. Twenty-three studies met the inclusion criteria. The results of meta-analyses of large-sample studies revealed: (a) a crude overall prevalence of 7.0%, (b) a crude cadaveric preva

BACKGROUND: Corneal ulcers often lead to scarring and astigmatism, and significant loss of vision is a common consequence.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of graft rejection, one of the most serious concerns with this procedure, and to evaluate the recovery of visual function in those patients for whom the operation was successful.
METHODS: We describe a retrospective study of 33 corneal ulcer patients undergoing penetrating keratoplasty (PK) at the Tabriz Nikookari Eye Hospital.
RESULTS: Mean age of the patients was 44 ± 14 years. Most common risk factors for active keratitis were trauma,

INTRODUCTION: Many medical disciplines, such as emergency medicine, trauma surgery, dermatology, psychiatry, family practice, and dentistry have documented attempts at assessing the level of bioterrorism preparedness in their communities. Currently, there is neither such an assessment nor an existing review of potential bioterrorism agents as they relate to plastic surgery. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to present plastic surgeons with a review of potential bioterrorism agents.
METHODS: A review of the literature on bioterrorism agents and online resources of the Centers for Disea

The purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiology and control of hospital-acquired infections (HAI) in paediatric surgery. We reviewed 2844 hospitalized children in a paediatric surgical clinic between January 1997 and December 2000. The diagnosis of HAI was made based on criteria proposed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The incidence, type of micro-organisms and infections, age, sex, risk factors, and the economic aspects were recorded. The mortality, duration of hospitalization and economic aspects of patients were compared with 78 control patients matured for

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rapidly developing cutaneous ulcer that is rare in the hand and may mimic a fulminating infection. The correct treatment is nonsurgical; surgery may actually incite a pathergic response worsening the condition. Misdiagnosis results in inappropriate treatment, unnecessary surgery, and even amputations. The records of 7 patients with pyoderma gangrenosum of the hand treated at 2 large academic medical centers between 1992 and 1999 were reviewed. There were 4 men and 3 women with an average age of 58 years (range, 32-81 years). Five patients had bilateral involvement. Mi

A questionnaire-based case-control study was carried out on 86 patients with neurologist-confirmed idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and 86 controls similar in sex and age. The control group was recruited in outpatient specialist centers of the same University Hospital (glaucoma, psoriasis vulgaris, essential arterial hypertension and renal diseases). Exposure was defined as occupational or residential contact with a given factor for at least 10 consecutive years prior to the onset of PD. Smoking habits were defined by exclusion of those subjects who never smoked. The following risk factors

Pinhole magnification scintigraphy is an effective means of evaluating the pediatric skeleton because it provides optimal high-resolution images. This technique is indicated when diagnostic uncertainty persists after high-resolution imaging with parallel hole collimation. Pinhole magnification scintigraphy requires approximately 20 minutes of acquisition time per image and meticulous attention to details such as choice of pinhole insert, collimator positioning, and patient immobilization. However, the technique is superior to planar imaging in demonstrating acute osteomyelitis in bone adjacent

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) that is more than minor frequently requires aeromedical transport to higher-level trauma centers. The detrimental effects of hypoxemia and hypotension during transport are well established, but the influence of transport altitude and ambient barometric pressure on patient outcomes remains poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate whether transport altitude is associated with in-hospital mortality in adults with more than minor TBI.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of adult patients (≥ 18 years) with more than minor TBI…

INTRODUCTION: Various factors can influence the survival of patients with severe burns. One of these factors could be the day or time of the burn injury. There are studies describing worse outcomes and higher mortality, as well as longer hospital stays, for emergency presentations at night and weekends for certain conditions. This study evaluates data from multiple burn centers, to analyse whether the day of the week, time of day or season of the year when a severe burn injury occurs has an impact on patient survival in a single patient cohort.
METHODS: Only primary admitted adult patients wi

BACKGROUND: Teaching hospitals serve as referral centers for pediatric trauma care. However, the impact of interhospital transfer on outcomes in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) within urban teaching hospitals remains unclear. Hence, we examined whether transferred pediatric TBI patients to urban teaching hospitals experienced different outcomes from directly admitted patients, hypothesizing that results would be comparable.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of pediatric TBI hospitalizations from 2016 to 2021 using the National Inpatient Sample database. Patients were catego

BACKGROUND: Humeral shaft fractures are common injuries with a high risk of nonunion, particularly when treated nonoperatively. Food insecurity—a modifiable aspect of social disadvantage—is prevalent in orthopedic trauma populations and may adversely impact bone healing. This study aimed to evaluate associations between neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage and humeral shaft fracture healing progression, and investigate current food insecurity screening and management practices. METHODS: Adult patients with humeral shaft fractures at two urban Level-1 trauma centers from 2016 to 2023 w…

Background/Objectives: The growing elderly population and concomitant increase in physical activity of older adults has led to a growing number of seriously injured elderly patients. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the influence of the leading region of injury in severely injured patients on the risk of mortality in different age groups, with focus on elderly patients. Methods: Data from the TraumaRegister DGU® from 2015 to 2020 were analyzed, including severely injured patients admitted to Swiss, German and Austrian trauma centers. Inclusion criteria were a minim…

BACKGROUND: Head injury is a leading cause of mortality from falls in adults aged ≥55 years. This study assessed demographic and geographic disparities in fall-related head injury mortality among United States adults from 1999 to 2020.
METHODS: Mortality data were extracted from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC WONDER) database using International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) codes for falls (W00-W19) and head injuries (S00-S09). Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 100,000 population were calculated by year, se
