Hydrophilic cationic surface modification confers simultaneous antibacterial and antithrombotic properties to blood-contacting devices.

The clinical application of blood-contacting medical devices carries lethal risks such as sepsis and vascular embolism, with thrombosis and bacterial infection being core complications that severely threaten device safety. Although cationic surface modification strategies exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial properties without the risk of bacterial resistance, non-specific adhesion induced by electrostatic effects both diminishes antibacterial efficacy and exacerbates thrombotic risk. Hydrophilic modification techniques are extensively employed in anti-adhesion surface coating research. This s

Development of an oxidized alginate/decellularized retinal matrix composite scaffold for retinal tissue engineering applications.

The retinal extracellular matrix (rECM) offers architectural support, adhesion sites, and signaling cues that regulate retinal development and viability. However, rECM's poor mechanical properties and rapid degradation rate hinder its application for scaffold fabrication, especially during handling their counterpart hydrogel and transplantation procedures. To address these issues, this study introduces oxidized alginate (OA) to develop and optimize a scaffold composed of rECM and OA. To achieve this, alginate was partially oxidized with an oxidation degree of 5 % and the resulting oxidized alg

Cell-derived extracellular matrix-loaded gelatin electrospun nanofibrous hydrogel for trauma repair: Fabrication and biomedical application.

Severe skin damage, such as trauma and burns, is a major challenge in the field of wound healing biomaterials research. In this work, a Gel/ECM nanofibrous membrane was developed through electrospinning; structurally, it mimics the extracellular matrix (ECM) involved in skin regeneration. Its mechanical properties and biological functionality are ensured by selecting the optimal Gel/ECM ratio of 4:1. Gel/ECM membrane with this ratio exhibits appropriate degradability, and has a hydrophilic surface more conducive to cell adhesion and tissue remodeling. Biocompatibility tests show that the mater

Biphasic Electrical Stimulation of Schwann Cells on Conducting Polymer-Coated Carbon Microfibers.

Electroactive biomaterials are a key emerging technology for the treatment of neural damage. Conducting polymer-coated carbon microfibers are particularly useful for this application because they provide directional support for cell growth and tissue repair and simultaneously allow for ultrasensitive recording and stimulation of neural activity. Here, we report in vitro experiments investigating the biology of Schwann cells (SCs), a major player in peripheral nerve regeneration, on electroconducting microfibers. The optimal molecular composition of the cell substrate and cell culture medium wa

Injectable glycyrrhizinate-pectin hydrogel wound dressing based on natural ingredients.

Wound healing remains a significant clinical challenge, particularly for chronic and non-healing wounds, which impose substantial burdens on patients and healthcare systems. Despite advances in wound care, traditional dressings lack therapeutic properties and can impede the healing process due to their inability to conform to irregular wound geometries and lack of self-healing capabilities. This study addresses these limitations by introducing an innovative, injectable Glycyrrhizic acid ammonium salt/Pectin@Strontium (GAAS/Pec@Sr) hydrogel dressing. The hydrogel is derived from natural ingredi

Zwitterionic hydrogel coatings enhance anti-fouling and anti-thrombogenicity of decellularized swim bladder for bioprosthetic heart valves.

Glutaraldehyde cross-linked bovine/porcine pericardium has been used as prosthetic heart valves (BHVs), while residual aldehyde groups induce cytotoxicity, thrombus formation, and progressive calcification deposition, which ultimately limits instrument life span to 10-15 years. We innovatively designed a multifunctional zwitterionic hydrogel coating copolymer poly (SBMA-co-DMEMAm) on swim bladder-derived material, which is composed of hydrophilic monomer SBMA and aldehyde-containing monomer DMEMAm; besides the aldehyde group can crosslink fish bladder tissue and improve the mechanical properti

Bioactive cellulose-based thermoresponsive hydrogel with engineered ordered channels for rapid hemostasis and tissue regeneration.

Conventional PNIPAM hydrogels' slow thermal response and weak mechanics limit their wound repair potential. Inspired by muscle laminar structure and phospholipid self-assembly, this study developed a thermosensitive WSCA-PNSA hydrogel using water-soluble cellulose acetate (WSCA) and PNIPAM. WSCA guides PNIPAM self-assembly via hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions and hydrogen bonding, forming ordered lamellar pores. This significantly enhances mechanical strength and thermal response speed. The hydrogel demonstrates excellent biocompatibility, self-adhesion, sustained antimicrobial activity, a

3D-printed poly(ethylene) glycol diacrylate (PEGDA)-chitosan-nanohydroxyapatite scaffolds: Structural characterization and cellular response.

Polymer-based scaffolds with bioactive materials offer great potential in bone tissue engineering. Polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) scaffolds fabricated via liquid crystal display 3D printing technique lack inherent osteoconductivity. To improve such properties, chitosan of 10 and 20 wt% and nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) (3-10 wt%) were incorporated into PEGDA scaffolds. nHA, synthesized via wet chemical precipitation, had a particle size of 28 nm and exhibited low crystallinity, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. PEGDA-chitosan-nHA scaffolds underwent post-curing and 70 % ethanol leaching tr

Drug-eluting vascular stents with surface modification of anticoagulation and pro-endothelialization.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) treatment relies on covered stents, yet thrombosis, restenosis, and delayed endothelialization remain challenges. This study developed a bifunctional heparin/zwitterionic polymer (CBMA) coating on dopamine-modified stents via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The coating integrates CBMA's antifouling properties (98.5% reduction in BSA adsorption) with heparin's sustained anticoagulation (37% APTT prolongation, 17 s TT increase) and endothelialization promotion (194.97% endothelial cell activity after 5 days). 3D printed polycaprolactone/phosphoester-modified poly(amino acid)-graphene oxide scaffold for meniscal regeneration.

Given the limited blood supply that results in the poor self-healing ability of the meniscus, use of meniscal tissue engineering (MTE) scaffolds has emerged as an effective strategy for the treatment of meniscal injuries. However, the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is limited in the inflammatory state caused by chronic injuries, making it challenging for existing meniscal implants to promote meniscal regeneration and delay articular cartilage degeneration in an inflammatory environment. This study introduces a method to incorporate phosphoester (PE) units into the main chain of poly

Regional and cell specific bioactivity of injectable extracellular matrix biomaterials in myocardial infarction.

Myocardial infarction (MI) remains a global health concern. To mitigate subacute and chronic MI pathophysiology, we previously investigated a pro-reparative decellularized extracellular matrix hydrogel. Despite increasing interest in biomaterial scaffolds, single cell and spatially resolved transcriptomics have not been used to probe their therapeutic activity in the heart. Here, we utilize spatial transcriptomics and single nucleus RNA sequencing to delineate the regional and cell-specific bioactivity of extracellular matrix biomaterials. Extracellular matrix hydrogel subacute treatment in fe

Chairside-applicable MS/FGelMA hydrogel with enhanced osteogenesis and mechanical adaptability for alveolar ridge preservation.

Current alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) materials face unresolved trade-offs between mechanical stability, bioactivity, and clinical operability. To address this, we developed a fish-derived methacrylated gelatin (FGelMA) hydrogel composited with magnesium silicate (MS) microparticles combining the low immunogenicity of FGelMA with the dual osteo-angiogenic potential of MS. To characterize the physical properties of this material, the composite hydrogels (MS/FGelMA) were tested using a mechanical tester and a rheometer, and then its biocompatibility and in vitro osteogenic properties were an
