Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is found in about 30% of premature infants with a birth weight < 1500 g and/or a gestational age < 32 weeks. Many risk factors are directly or indirectly involved in the development of ROP. We studied the occurrence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) during an 11-year period in infants weighing less than 1500 g at birth and looked for differences between the periods 1980-1985 (216 infants) and 1986-1990 (217 infants). Between 1976 and 1988, 28 neonates with gastroschisis and 44 with omphalocele were treated. In 44 patients primary closure was achieved, while silastic prostheses were used in 23 patients, and dura implant in three patients. Two patients were not treated. A 20-month experience of mechanical ventilation (MV) in the newborn infants (birth weight greater than or equal to 1500 g) from a developing country is described. A total of 41 neonates (4.1% of total admissions to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) were treated with MV. We report on a retrospective analysis of admissions to the neonatal unit at the Johannesburg Hospital during the 18-month period September 1980 - February 1982. OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors for perinatal mortality among hospital-based deliveries in Nigeria.
METHODS: The WHO Global Maternal and Perinatal Health Survey was implemented in Nigeria as a first step in establishing a global system for monitoring maternal and perinatal health. Twenty-one health facilities with more than 1000 deliveries annually were selected by a stratified multistage cluster sampling strategy. Process indicators have been recommended for monitoring the availability and use of emergency obstetric care (EmOC) services. A health facility-based study was carried out in 2002 in four districts of West Bengal, India, to analyze these process indicators. OBJECTIVE: Leuprolide acetate (LA) has improved the efficiency of human menopausal gonadotropins (hMG) in in vitro fertilization cycles. We hypothesized that the combination of LA/hMG/intrauterine insemination (IUI) would be more efficacious than hMG/IUI cycles.
DESIGN: During an 18-month period, all patients completing either a hMG/IUI cycle (group I) or a LA/hMG/IUI cycle (group II) had the characteristics and outcomes of their stimulation cycles assessed. The groups were not prospectively randomized.
