INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic fractures are excluded from Atypical Femur Fractures as per the report of American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. However, there are increasing reports demonstrating the existence of atypical periprosthetic femur fractures (APFF) which are related to chronic bisphosphonate use. Literature states that these fractures can be treated as per the atypical femur fracture treatment algorithm, and prophylactic fixation can be suitable to treat symptomatic incomplete fractures. An impending or incomplete APFF can be an important reason for post-operative lateral thi

Inherited germline variants are now recognized as important contributors to hematologic myeloid malignancies, but their reliable detection depends on obtaining uncontaminated germline DNA. In solid tumors, peripheral blood remains free of tumor cells and therefore serves as a standard source for germline testing. In contrast, peripheral blood often contains neoplastic or clonally mutated cells in hematologic malignancies, making it impossible to distinguish somatic from germline variants. This unique challenge necessitates using an alternative, non-hematopoietic tissue source for accurate germ

BACKGROUND: Posterior pelvic ring restoration and stabilization are widely recognized as the primary goal in managing pelvic ring injuries. However, anterior pelvic ring (APR) stabilization is also essential in certain cases. Traditional methods, including open plating or intramedullary screw fixation alone, may be insufficient for addressing several challenging situations. The intramedullary screw and plate combination (SPC) technique for APR stabilization offers a feasible solution for these complex cases while achieving favorable clinical outcomes. Therefore, the present study aimed to intr

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fracture (DRF) is one of the most common orthopaedic-related traumas. DRF patients with die-punch fractures have a higher risk of loss of reduction, poorer functional outcomes, and increased risk of complications even after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). According to the three-column theory, the lunate fossa is an important part of the intermediate column for load bearing. When the distal radius fracture involves the lunate fossa, adequate anatomical reduction can have an important impact on the prognosis of wrist function. Herein, we used the combined v

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine the therapeutic effects of human mesenchymal stromal/stem cell (MSC) exosomes in a rat model of growth plate injury.
METHODS: A growth plate defect was surgically created on the distal part of the right femur of 40 female Sprague-Dawley rats. A single intra-articular injection of 100 µg of MSC exosomes in 100 µL of phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS), or an equivalent volume of PBS alone, was administered to the right knee immediately after surgery. At 4 and 8 weeks post-treatment, limb length was measured with micro-CT, and tissue r

OBJECT: In cases of spondylosis or spine trauma, cervical interbody grafts are sometimes required after anterior discectomy. To avoid morbidity related to the harvesting of iliac crest bone, numerous materials have been developed such as allografts, methylmethacrylate, biocompatible osteoconductive polymer, and coralline grafts or cages. Some of these materials, however, are inefficient for fusion or are associated with specific complications. Conversely, hydroxyapatite (HA) grafts have numerous advantages. For example, their mechanical properties provide adequate load resistance and their por

BACKGROUND: Bones develop to structurally balance strength and mobility. Bone developmental dynamics are influenced by whether an animal is ambulatory at birth. Precocial species, which are ambulatory at birth, develop advanced skeletal maturity in utero and experience postnatal development under mechanical loading. Here, we characterized postnatal bone development in the lower forelimbs of precocial goats using microcomputed tomography and histology. Our analysis focused on the two phalanges 1 (P1) bones and the partially fused metacarpal bone of the goat autopod from birth through adulthood.

Bone defects in the limbs may result from trauma, debridement during osteitis or pseudarthrosis resection or tumors [1]. Treating bone defects of the femur and tibia poses a substantial challenge in trauma surgery and orthopedics. Interdisciplinary orthoplastic treatment combined with soft tissue reconstruction is often necessary to preserve the extremity and its function. In addition to shortening surgery, various procedures are available for biological reconstruction, including autogenous and allogeneic bone transplantation, the use of osteoconductive bone substitutes, the induced membrane t

Cartilage histomorphometry is often performed on decalcified, paraffin-embedded bone sections, which provide versatility in staining applications from basic morphology to immunohistochemistry. Safranin O is a cationic dye that binds to proteoglycans in cartilage and is routinely used to assess growth plate dynamics and/or fracture repair at bone-cartilage interfaces. When used with a counterstain such as fast green, safranin O can offer exquisite differentiation of cartilage from surrounding bone. However, various decalcification and processing methods can deplete proteoglycans, rendering inco

Sternal dehiscence after cardiac surgery occurs infrequently and can lead to mediastinitis and prolonged hospital stay and may even result in death. The most common treatment for mechanical sternal instability is rewiring with wound debridement. We present a case in which a modified titanium mesh plate fixation technique was used. A safe and easy to perform technique, this method can be an alternative option to wire closure in a sternum with fractures, instability or poor bone quality.

Longitudinal growth of bone depends on the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes located in growth plate. Recent advances in understanding the process of chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation reveal the local and systemic factors responsible for the process. SOX9, Ihh and FGFR3 are the former, growth hormone and thyroid hormone the latter. Achondroplasia, a representative entity of skeletal dysplasia is caused by the abnormality of FGFR3 and exhibits short stature. Hypofunction of growth hormone and thyroid hormone are associated with short stature as well.

Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia leads to progressive and disabling deformity involving the proximal femur. Conventional methods of treatment have been ineffective in controlling this problem. Two stage reconstruction was carried out in a case of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with bilateral shepherd's crook deformity. Bilateral subtrochanteric osteotomies with intramedullary fixation in the first stage and intertrochanteric osteotomies in the second stage with nail plate fixation was done to provide definitive control of the deformity. Bone graft was not used.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior trans-iliac plate osteosynthesis (TPO) is commonly used for the stabilization of unilateral vertically unstable sacral fractures. However, its biomechanical performance across different Denis fracture patterns remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the fracture pattern-dependent biomechanical behavior of posterior trans-iliac plate osteosynthesis (TPO) in unilateral vertically unstable sacral fractures, using bilateral triangular osteosynthesis (BTO) as a high-stability reference construct.
