INTRODUCTION: Despite the significant burden of childhood and adolescent cancers, no specific studies recently discussed the burden of cancer in this group in the North Africa and the Middle East (NAME) region. Therefore, we aimed to study the burden of cancers in this group in this region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrieved the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data for children and adolescent cancers (0-19 years old) in the NAME region from 1990 to 2019. 21 types of neoplasms were grouped as "neoplasms", comprising 19 specific cancer groups as well as "other malignant neoplasms" and "other ne

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability, contributing to ~30% of all injury-related deaths in the US. TBI occurs when a force transmitted to the head causes neuropathologic damage and impairment of brain function. TBI doubles risk of suicide and is the major determinant of acquired seizure disorders. TBI arising from closed head trauma (CHT) significantly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Evidence for a possible role of TBI as a risk factor for sporadic amyotrophic late

Toxoplasmosis has gained particular attention in the AIDS era as the most common opportunistic encephalitis in HIV-infected patients. Since there are important parallels between the human and rodent infection, experimental murine toxoplasmosis is widely used to study the immune reactions to this protozoal parasite. Oral application of low-virulent Toxoplasma (T.) gondii cysts leads to a biphasic disease characterized by an acute, generalized phase followed by a chronic stage confined to the brain, where an encephalitis with persistence of the parasite develops. Immunity to T. gondii is T cell

IMPORTANCE: Donation physicians (DPs) are usually critical care specialists whose responsibilities may include assessment of donation eligibility, care of potential donors, death determination, education, and advocacy. While DP programs have been implemented in some countries with the aim of optimizing the organ donation process, there are few studies evaluating their effectiveness.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of a DP program with key performance metrics.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used interrupted time series analysis to compare baseline data from intensiv

Hypoglycemia is commonly encountered in the emergency department. Patients can present with a myriad of symptoms and its presentation can mimic other more serious diagnoses. Despite the relative ease of its management, clinicians often miss the diagnosis or mismanage it even when discovered. Glucose is an important energy source for the brain and failing to recognize hypoglycemia or mismanaging it can lead to permanent neurologic disability or death. Although it is important to replenish glucose in a rapid fashion, it is equally important to discover and manage the underlying etiology to preve

Posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) is a severe complication of intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants. It can cause varying degrees of brain injury, neurological impairment, and even death. The pathogenesis of PHH is complex, and several temporizing treatment strategies are currently available. However, these approaches differ in their associated complications and long-term outcomes, and no consensus has been reached regarding the optimal temporizing intervention. This review summarizes the procedural characteristics, complications, and prognostic outcomes of current temporizing treat

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and dementia are leading causes of death in women, with dementia disproportionately affecting females. Both share risk factors such as type 2 and gestational diabetes. While diabetes and CVD risk factors are well studied, gaps remain in understanding dementia's lifespan influences, sex-specific effects, and social determinants. This report advocates a convergence science approach, integrating basic, behavioral, and implementation sciences, to address these gaps. We propose a novel framework to examine shared cardiometabolic risks across the lifespan, enabling targe

Lack of data from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event System makes analyses of the risks of newly approved anti-Alzheimer's antibodies inadequate to determine whether such risks justify the minimal clinical benefits reported. A recent disproportionate analysis in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease by Ge et al. is a case in point. Among serious adverse effects, it only addresses amyloid associated imaging abnormalities, whereas the even more threatening ones, brain tissue loss and therapy-related death, are not mentioned. We urge the FDA to prioritize monitoring of all adver

Somatic and craniofacial injuries from the use of electric scooters (e-scooters) have become a serious public health concern, affecting both riders and pedestrians. Accidents involving e-scooters pose a risk for bone fracutres and significant injuries to the soft tissues and brain, and severe injuries may result in death. Oral healthcare providers should particularly be aware of the potential for injuries to the oral hard and soft tissues. Dentists have the opportunity to educate their patients on preventive measures to mitigate e-scooter injuries and to advocate the use of protective equipmen

We draw attention to a historic case of a boy who suffered from scarlet fever (typically caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes) at age 7 years and went on to develop the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). His physicians believed that the subsequent dementia was related to the infection. After death at 24 years of age, postmortem brain examination revealed abundant AD-type senile plaques and fibrils, formally confirming AD. Other potential causes of early-onset dementia are discussed, but these are distinct from patient E.H. This case is pertinent regarding the current debate about

Rotenone is a naturally occurring plant product used as an insecticide, pesticide and piscicide. It is lipophilic in nature and can cross the blood-brain barrier and induce the degeneration of neurons. It inhibits the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I and stops the transfer of electrons. It induces ROS generation, which impairs mitochondrial activity. Rotenone is a toxic agent which causes the death of neurons. The present review describes the effect of rotenone on neurodegeneration with an emphasis on behavioral, pathological and neuropathological components carried out on various exp

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) exhibits high prevalence and mortality, but current treatments remain suboptimal. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has long been effectively used for TBI intervention. Moreover, the recently discovered iron-dependent cell death pathway, known as ferroptosis, characterized by lipid peroxidation, as a key target in TCM-based treatments for TBI. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in TCM strategies targeting ferroptosis in TBI therapy, covering natural product monomers, classic formulas, and acupuncture/moxibustion. Pulmonary sarcomatoid carcinoma (PSC) is a rare and aggressive subtype of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). This case report describes a 55-year-old male with a significant smoking history who initially presented with left hemiplegia. Imaging studies revealed brain metastases and a spiculated parenchymal lung nodule in the left apical region. Histopathological examination confirmed PSC through a CT-guided biopsy. The patient's condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to death before the initiation of planned palliative chemotherapy. This report highlights the diagnostic challenges and poor

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, predominantly impacting men. The highest risk for the development of a TBI includes athletes, construction workers, military personnel, and law enforcement. TBI is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. The degree of TBI will determine the severity of clinical manifestations. Management of TBI may be a combination of operative and non-operative interventions. Nursing considerations and management include frequent assessment of vital signs and neurologic status, maintaining hemodynamic stability, ear

ATP1A2 encodes a subunit of sodium/potassium-transporting adenosine triphosphatase (Na+ /K+ -ATPase). Heterozygous pathogenic variants of ATP1A2 cause familial hemiplegic migraine, alternating hemiplegia of childhood, and developmental and epileptic encephalopathy. Biallelic loss-of-function variants in ATP1A2 lead to fetal akinesia, respiratory insufficiency, microcephaly, polymicrogyria, and dysmorphic facies, resulting in fetal death. Here, we describe a patient with compound heterozygous ATP1A2 variants consisting of missense and nonsense variants. He survived after birth with brain malfor

The overall activity of cycling, although profoundly heterogenous, often occurs with mechanisms consistent with motor vehicle collisions. Advanced trauma life support is the standard of care. Traumatic brain injury is the leading cause of death, and concussions are common in cyclists. Road rash is the most common injury, and management should be synonymous with other kinds of burns. A unique aspect of cycling medicine is that it often is done on public roadways in close proximity to the athletes during competition. Clinicians who care for cyclists in the field setting should be prepared to man

Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial brain tumor in adult humans; however, our understanding of meningioma tumorigenesis is relatively limited in comparison with the body of research available for other intracranial tumors such as gliomas. Here we briefly describe the current understanding of aberrant signaling pathways and tumor growth mechanisms responsible for meningioma differentiation, cellular growth, development, inhibition, and death. Numerous cellular functions impacted by these signaling pathways are critical for angiogenesis, proliferation, and apoptosis. Ultimately,

Many medications and toxins may induce central nervous system (CNS) depression. Even when the intention is to induce CNS depression, other nervous system adverse effects may occur, such as with anesthetics. Pain medications produce characteristic CNS toxicities. Sedative hypnotics may induce altered mentation among systemic toxicities. Stimulants may mimic coma when discontinued abruptly. Acute and chronic carbon monoxide poisoning can lead to altered mental status and prolonged cognitive difficulties. Some medications and environmental toxins can mimic brain death. High clinical suspicion and…
