This pioneering study investigated the real-life effectiveness of single-pill combination (SPC) antihypertensive therapy in patients with uncontrolled blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular risk factors. After treatment with olmesartan medoxomil/amlodipine besylate/hydrochlorothiazide for 24 weeks, adults with apparent resistant hypertension had significantly reduced systolic BP and approximately 80% achieved target BP. SPC therapy may improve adherence in patients with pseudo-resistant hypertension and is a potentially effective treatment for resistant hypertension.

Appropriate empiric therapy reduces mortality and morbidity associated with serious Gram-negative infections. β-lactams (BLs) owing to their safety, efficacy, and coverage spectrum are the most preferred agents for empiric use. Inappropriate use of older penicillins and cephalosporins led to selection and spread of resistant clones. As a result, these valuable agents have lost their reliability compelling clinicians to often use erstwhile last-line therapies such as carbapenems. Excessive carbapenems use imposed collateral damage by selecting difficult-to-treat carbapenem-resistant organisms.

Ten oxacillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus strains were grown on agar containing four times their ciprofloxacin MIC to determine if exposure to ciprofloxacin would increase their resistance to oxacillin. All strains grew on the ciprofloxacin-containing agar and subsequently grew on oxacillin-salt agar. Standard therapy of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia with cotrimoxazole and intravenous pentamidine second line therapy both have a response rate of 75 to 90%.
