Prodrugs for targeted cancer therapy.

Introduction: Prodrugs have been used to improve the selectivity and efficacy of cancer therapy by targeting unique abnormal markers that are overexpressed by cancer cells and are absent in normal tissues. In this context, different strategies have been exploited and new ones are being developed each year. Areas covered: In this review, an integrated view of the potential use of prodrugs in targeted cancer therapy is provided. Passive and active strategies are discussed in light of the advantages of each one and some successful examples are provided, as well as the clinical status of several p

Controlling animal populations using anti-fertility vaccines.

The goal for fertility control of animal populations is the development of a safe, economical and effective contraceptive. One offshoot of the development of this technology is the acquisition of multiple therapeutic strategies for diseases, such as immunotherapy probes for cancer. In the long run, successful population control requires multifactorial strategies. One component of population control is immunocontraception. Development of effective antigens for immunocontraceptive vaccines has been remarkable and has greatly advanced our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of fertilization

[Indications and implementation of recommendations of the working group "Tissue Regeneration and Tissue Substitutes" for autologous chondrocyte transplantation (ACT)].

For the treatment of full-thickness articular cartilage lesions of the knee joint, as a result of trauma or osteochondritis dissecans, a variety of biological reconstruction techniques have been developed. Different studies, some of which were performed as randomised, prospective clinical studies, showed that the autologous chondrocyte transplantation (ACT) provides the most satisfying and reliable method of cartilage reconstruction in the adult when applied to defects exceeding 4 cm (2). Based on these results, ACT seems to be of economic benefit, as the risk of developing osteoarthritis corr

Development of vaccines to control bovine tuberculosis in cattle and relationship to vaccine development for other intracellular pathogens.

Vaccination of cattle against bovine tuberculosis could be an important strategy for the control of disease either where there is a wildlife reservoir of Mycobacterium bovis infection or in developing countries where it is not economically feasible to implement a 'test and slaughter' control program. Advances in the understanding of protective immune responses to M. bovis infection in cattle and the advent of new molecular biological techniques, coupled with the sequencing of the M. bovis genome have provided opportunities for the rational development of improved tuberculosis vaccines. Agricultural waste-derived nanoparticles for heavy metal removal from wastewater: a comprehensive review.

Heavy metal contamination of aquatic environments remains a major environmental challenge due to the persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulative nature of metals such as Pb(II), Cd(II), Cr(VI), Hg(II), and As(V). Agricultural waste-derived nanoparticles have recently emerged as promising sustainable adsorbents because of their low cost, high surface area, tunable surface chemistry, and strong metal-binding capability. This review critically evaluates recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, adsorption performance, and removal mechanisms of nano-engineered adsorbents produced from agr

Alcohol- and drug-related mortality in Brazil: an ecological and population-based study on changes observed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted healthcare services and intensified socio-economic vulnerabilities, potentially escalating harmful substance use. In Brazil, pre-pandemic mortality from alcohol and drug use was stable. However, the pandemic introduced new risks that may have triggered a significant increase in related deaths. This study, therefore, aims to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on alcohol- and drug-related deaths in Brazil from 2020 to 2022. METHODS: This population-based ecological study analyzed alcohol- and drug-related mortality across Brazil from 2015

Research neglect of root system architecture in root and tuber crops important for Sub-Saharan African Food Security.

BACKGROUND: Root and tuber crops (RTCs) provide 354 kcal/capita/day across sub-Saharan Africa (17.7% of dietary energy from major crop categories), and several countries derive over 40% of crop calories from cassava, yam, sweet potato, taro, and cocoyam. Despite this, research on the root systems that give rise to their harvested storage organs remains limited and concentrated in regions where RTCs contribute little to food security. METHODS: We combined food supply data for 46 sub-Saharan African countries (2018-2022) with a systematic bibliometric analysis of 893 RTC publications (1939-2025

(In)coherence between Chagas disease policy and the experiences of those affected in Mexico: The need for a transdisciplinary approach.

Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a significant public health challenge in México, symbolizing systemic neglect in healthcare. Despite longstanding efforts to control its transmission, there are critical gaps in the alignment of public health policies with the lived experiences of affected individuals. This study examines these dissonances by analyzing qualitative interviews with 61 individuals diagnosed with T. cruzi and reviewing relevant Mexican public health regulations, including national standards and action programs. Findings reveal that most diagnoses oc

Evaluating the cost-effectiveness of Cy-Tb for LTBI in India: a comprehensive economic modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a significant challenge, as there is no gold standard diagnostic test. Current methods used for identifying LTBI are the interferon-γ release assay (IGRA), which is based on a blood test, and the tuberculin skin test (TST), which has low sensitivity. Both these tests are inadequate, primarily because they have limitations with the low bacterial burden characteristic of LTBI. This highlights the need for the development and adoption of more specific and accurate diagnostic tests to effectively identify LTBI. Herein we estimate the cost-ef
