Kinesiophobia and its association with treatment choice in individuals with idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported increased kinesiophobia in adults with degenerative scoliosis or adolescents who have undergone spinal surgery. However, little is known about the phenomenon of kinesiophobia among adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate levels of kinesiophobia and its association with treatment choice in IS. METHODS: The study included 98 IS patients with a mean age of 14 years and 20 healthy controls. Participants with IS were divided into groups based on treatment conditions, as follows: (1) untreated (n= 3

Six Minutes Walking in Polio Survivors: Effects on Fatigue and Walking Adaptability.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether 6-min walking is fatiguing for polio survivors, and how fatigue influences their normal and adaptive walking. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PATIENTS: Polio survivors (n = 23) with ≥ 1 fall and/or fear of falling reported in the previous year and healthy individuals (n = 11). METHODS: Participants performed 1 normal-walk test and 2 walking-adaptability tests (target stepping and narrow-beam walking) on an instrumented treadmill at fixed self-selected speed, each test lasting 6 min. Leg-muscle fatigue (leg-muscle activation, measured with surface electromyog…

Do Age and Educational Stage Influence No-Mobile-Phone Phobia?

Technological progress not only brings with it resources that improve and facilitate the day-to-day life of the people who make up society but also entails health risks, with the emergence of terms, such as nomophobia, which is considered an anxiety disorder produced by the fear that not having a mobile phone generates in a person. This research aims to identify the relationship and influence between levels of nomophobia and the age or educational stage of students. The research method is based on a correlational and predictive design of quantitative methodology. The instrument used is the NMP…

Emotion Recognition in Adults With a History of Childhood Maltreatment: A Systematic Review.

Child maltreatment has many well-documented lasting effects on children. Among its consequences, it affects children's recognition of emotio … ts with a history of childhood maltreatment show a differentiated reaction to happiness, anger, and fear. Happiness is less detected, whereas negative emotions are recognized more rapidly and at a lower intensity compared to adults not exposed to such traumatic events. Emotion recognition is also related to greater brain activation for the maltreated g …

Emotion Recognition and Traumatic Brain Injury: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to impairments in emotion recognition that can present considerable challenges to social communication … patients were impaired across all emotion categories, with moderate/large effect sizes observed for fear and anger, moderate effect sizes for disgust, neutral and sadness, while effect sizes for happiness and surprise were small. The magnitude of impairment for individuals with TBI severity classified as moderate/severe TBI was moderate, whereas severe …

Predicting generalized anxiety disorder among women using Shapley value.

Mental illness is a set of health problems that affect the way individuals perceive themselves, relate to others, and interact with the world around them. Due to the myriad of underlying causes and subsequent effects of mental illness, these conditions often trigger fear and misunderstanding among the general population. Common mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety disorders often affect an individual's thoughts, feelings, abilities, and behaviours. Anxiety disorder is characterized by an irrational fear of certain things or events. It is often attributed as the feeling of worry abou…

Progesterone levels predict reductions in behavioral avoidance following cognitive restructuring in women with spider phobia.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian hormones have been implicated as a potential source of variability in the effectiveness of exposure therapy for anxiety … evels. Behavioral avoidance, using a behavioral approach task with a live spider, and self-reported fear of spiders were measured at baseline and 1-week post-treatment. RESULTS: The results indicated that heightened levels of progesterone, but not estradiol, at the time of cognitive restructuring predicted greater post-treatment reductions in behavior …

Social anxiety disorder in children: investigating the relative contribution of automatic thoughts, repetitive negative thinking and metacognitions.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is common in youths. However, our understanding of SAD in children is inferior to that of SAD in adolescents or adults, and it is unclear if known adult SAD maintenance mechanisms may also operate in children with SAD. AIM: The paper sets out to investigate the specificity of positive automatic thoughts, social threat negative automatic thoughts, repetitive negative thinking, positive and negative metacognitions in predicting SAD symptoms and diagnoses in clinically anxious children. METHOD: We enrolled 122 clinically anxious children aged 7-13 years

Linear and Nonlinear EEG-Based Functional Networks in Anxiety Disorders.

Electrocortical network dynamics are integral to brain function. Linear and nonlinear connectivity applications enrich neurophysiological investigations into anxiety disorders. Discrete EEG-based connectivity networks are unfolding with some homogeneity for anxiety disorder subtypes. Attenuated delta/theta/beta connectivity networks, pertaining to anterior-posterior nodes, characterize panic disorder. Nonlinear measures suggest reduced connectivity of ACC as an executive neuro-regulator in germane "fear circuitry networks" might be more central than considered. Enhanced network complexity and …

BACKGROUND: Justice sensitivity (JS), the tendency to perceive and adversely respond to injustice, is related to externalizing problem behav … ficiary JS predicted social phobia symptoms. These links were fully mediated by negative affect and fear of rejection and criticism. LIMITATIONS: The present study used cross-sectional data and requires replication with longitudinal data. Influences from anxiety symptoms on JS are also possible. CONCLUSIONS: The present findings indicate that JS is l …

The challenges of timely and safe HIV disclosure among perinatally HIV-infected adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Improved access to antiretroviral therapy has resulted in an emerging population of adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) m … he practice of the disclosure is often complex, because of multiple barriers related to caregivers (fear of the parents of the breaking of the family secrecy, feelings of guilt) and to healthcare workers (lack of training, excess workload). SUMMARY: The development and evaluation of research interventions adapted to sociocultural contexts to support t …

Updating freeze: aligning animal and human research.

Freezing is widely used as the main outcome measure for fear in animal studies. Freezing is also getting attention more frequently in human stress research, as it is considered to play an important role in the development of psychopathology. Human models on defense behavior are largely based on animal models. Unfortunately, direct translations between animal and human studies are hampered by differences in definitions and methods. The present review therefore aims to clarify the conceptualization of freezing. Neurophysiological and neuroanatomical correlates are discussed and a translational m…

Is premenstrual dysphoria a variant of panic disorder? A review.

Patients with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and patients with panic disorder (PD) both experience high rates of panic attacks in la … patients. Psychological perspectives on panic emphasize that bodily sensations themselves can cause fear. Researchers have yet to apply several influential psychological approaches--conditioning, catastrophic misinterpretation, and anxiety sensitivity--to PMDD patients. Because psychological factors influence anxious responding in challenge studies, th …
