Brain infections caused by fungi of the Pseudallescheria / Scedosporium-complex weeks or months after a near drowning event should be considered, since mortality rate is high and specific diagnostic methods are necessary for fungal detection. Voriconazole is the only authorised antimycotic drug available for the treatment of these infections in Germany, but other antimycotics may also be indicated for alternate or combined treatment strategies. Consultation of a specific reference laboratory is recommended in comparable relevant cases.

This is a report of two patients with Canavan disease from the Federal Republic of Germany. One is a severely retarded, macrocephalic boy, who had the characteristic laboratory findings of Canavan disease and progressive leucodystrophy on neuro-imaging. The other is retarded, with signs of a cerebral movement disorder showing no deterioration during the first 15 months. The significance of aspartoacylase deficiency in Canavan disease for differential diagnosis, genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis of leucodystrophy is discussed.

Vesicovaginal fistulas in three patients and a vesicocutaneous fistula in one patient were treated by percutaneous transrenal occlusion of the ureter with a commercially available silicone occluder (Angiomed, Karlsruhe, Germany) which was secured by means of histoacryl placed on top. Urinary flow was diverted by a permanent nephrostomy tube. We observed no complications (e.g., urinary tract infection, occluder migration, or recurrence of urine discharge) at an average follow-up period of 9.1 months.

In order to expand previous knowledge about the farrowing process of hyperprolific sows, the effect of calcium, magnesium and phosphor concentration in the blood and the importance of husbandry were examined.
