The efficacy and tolerance of Cefazedone, a new Cephalosporin derivate, were investigated in an open clinical trial on 40 patients with bacteriological skin infections. Patients with Erysipelas, impetiginized dermatoses and Pyodermia were treated during an average period of 9 days mainly with a dosage of 2X1 g i.v., in some cases with 2X2 g i.v. daily. In 28 haemodialysis patients, in whom there was a high incidence of depleted marrow iron stores, a significant rise in Hb, and Hct, occasionally to a normal level, was achieved as effectively with oral as with i.v. iron supplements. There was a variable response to iron in individuals which could not be predicted from the initial iron status. No patient in whom marrow iron stores were reassessed after iron therapy developed increased marrow iron stores. Routine iron supplements are recommended in haemodialysis patients with regular monitoring of body iron stores.

The uterine uptake of tritiated hormones, oestradiol and progesterone, was studied at the time of ovum implantation in the rat. Macromolecular dyes such as trypan blue were used to distinguish implanted sites from the unimplanted ones. A differential uptake was found between the implanted and unimplanted sites in normal 6th day pregnant females. Oestradiol was retained more at the unimplanted sites, whereas its half-life was approximately the same at the two levels. The influence of dietary composition on the unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia of Gilbert's syndrome was studied in 29 patients. After a period on a normal diet (10 MJ) an intravenous infusion of 40% glucose (8-4 MJ) together with a 1-6 MJ oral diet for two days resulted in an increment in plasma bilirubin concentration of 127 +/- 18% (mean +/- SEM) above the basal level. We have compared the effects of oral and intravenous ethanol on the secretion of both thyrocalcitonin and gastrin in five patients with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. Ethanol caused a moderate rise in plasma thyrocalcitonin to 316% +/- 343% of baseline when given intravenously and to 197% +/- 106% of baseline when given orally. Only oral ethanol caused a measurable rise in serum gastrin levels. Serum calcium did not change significantly from baseline during either oral or intravenous administration. The use of intravenous isoproterenol in nineteen children with status asthmaticus who did not respond to standard anti-asthmatic therapy is reported. Fourteen albino rabbits were inoculated intravenously with 10(3.5)-10(4.0) mouse ICLD(50) of Chlamydia psittaci (strain M56) of mammalian origin.
