A rare case of cholesterol granuloma in the thyroid without an abnormality of lipid metabolism.

This report describes a cholesterol granuloma (CG) of the thyroid. The patient was a 79-year-old male. The mass in the thyroid was observed by chest computed tomography (CT). Initially, he had no clinical symptoms and the mass was not palpable. However, it started and became palpable and painful. He was diagnosed to have subacute thyroiditis. Although he was administered prednisolone (PSL), the mass grew larger and more solid. Then thyroid left lobectomy was performed under general anesthesia. The histological diagnosis was CG of the thyroid. After surgery his clinical course was favorable.

Patterns of lipid changes among type 2 diabetes patients in Sudan.

This study investigated the patterns and determinants of lipid disorders among a group of 250 type 2 adult diabetic patients and 60 age- and sex-matched healthy controls in Sudan. Demographic and clinical data, body mass index and waist circumference, and fasting blood samples were taken to estimate the glucose and lipid profile. The mean duration of diabetes was 9.4 years and 46.0% of patients had poor glycaemic control. Compared to controls we detected a statistically significant increase in triglycerides level and a decrease in HDL-C levels. Other lipid values showed a slight increase compa

Effect of opium addiction on lipid profile and atherosclerosis formation in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

In some Asian and Middle Eastern societies, opium consumption has traditionally been regarded as a way to lower blood lipids and to prevent heart diseases. This could eventually lead to addiction. In this study, the effect of oral opium consumption on serum lipids and atherogenesis in rabbits was investigated. Twenty-eight male New Zealand white rabbits were divided into control, hypercholesterolemic, addicted, and hypercholesterolemic-addicted groups and were studied for 3 months. Serum lipid profile was determined at the beginning of the study and at 1 month intervals thereafter. At the end …

Statin therapy in peritoneal dialysis patients: effects beyond lipid lowering.

Lipid abnormalities, and especially hypertriglyceridaemia, are a prominent feature of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The results from several studies have shown that statins are effective and safe lipid-lowering agents in these individuals. Besides lipid lowering, current evidence suggests that these agents exert multiple beneficial effects on PD patients. Statins may maintain residual kidney function by altering the response of the kidneys to dyslipidaemia and, thus, slow the progression of renal failure in PD patients. Also, statins may reduce the incidence of cardiovascular events, as w

Influence of different intravenous lipid emulsions on hepatobiliary dysfunction in a rabbit model.

OBJECTIVES: Long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in children is often complicated by the development of cholestasis, liver fibrosis, and liver failure. High doses of intravenous lipids may be involved in the pathogenesis of hepatobiliary dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of 2 newly developed lipid emulsions could reduce liver damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups of prepubescent rabbits received TPN including a lipid emulsion either based on soybean oil, olive oil, or soybean oil with n-3 fatty acids added. Enterally fed animals served as cont…

Supported bilayer lipid membrane arrays on photopatterned self-assembled monolayers.

This work demonstrates the use of photocleavable cholesterol derivatives to create supported bilayer lipid membrane arrays on silica. The photocleavable cholesteryl tether is attached to the surface by using the reaction of an amine-functionalized self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and the N-hydroxysuccinimide-based reagent 9. The resultant SAM contains an ortho-nitrobenzyl residue that can be cleaved by photolysis by using soft (365 nm) UV light regenerating the original amine surface, and which can be patterned using a mask. The photoreaction yield was approximately 75 % which was significantly

Interactions of amphotericin B derivatives with lipid membranes--a molecular dynamics study.

Amphotericin B (AmB) is a well-known polyene macrolide antibiotic used to treat systemic fungal infections. AmB targets more efficiently fungal than animal membranes. However, there are only minor differences in the mode of action of AmB against both types of membranes, which is a source of AmB toxicity. In this work, we analyzed interactions of two low toxic derivatives of AmB (SAmE and PAmE), synthesized in our laboratory, with lipid membranes. Molecular dynamics simulations of the lipid bilayers containing ergosterol (fungal cells) or cholesterol (animal cells) and the studied antibiotic mo

Characterization of liver disease and lipid metabolism in the Niemann-Pick C1 mouse.

Niemann-Pick type C1 (NPC1) disease is an autosomal-recessive cholesterol-storage disorder characterized by liver dysfunction, hepatosplenomegaly, and progressive neurodegeneration. The NPC1 gene is expressed in every tissue of the body, with liver expressing the highest amounts of NPC1 mRNA and protein. A number of studies have now indicated that the NPC1 protein regulates the transport of cholesterol from late endosomes/lysosomes to other cellular compartments involved in maintaining intracellular cholesterol homeostasis. The present study characterizes liver disease and lipid metabolism in

Functional UQCRC1 polymorphisms affect promoter activity and body lipid accumulation.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes constitute leading public health problems worldwide. Studies have shown that insulin resistance affiliated with these conditions is associated with skeletal muscle lipid accumulation, while the latter is associated with mitochondrial dysfunctions. However, the initiation and regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis rely heavily on approximately 1000 nuclear-encoded mitochondrial regulatory proteins. In this study, we targeted the ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase core protein I gene, a nuclear-encoded component of mitochondrial complex III, for its association with sub

Expression of the keratinocyte lipid transporter ABCA12 in developing and reconstituted human epidermis.

Serious defects in the epidermal keratinocyte lipid transporter ABCA12 are known to result in a deficient skin lipid barrier, leading to harlequin ichthyosis (HI). HI is the most severe inherited keratinizing disorder and is frequently fatal in the perinatal period. To clarify the role of ABCA12, ABCA12 expression was studied in developing human skin and HI lesions artificially reconstituted in immunodeficient mice. By immunofluorescent study, ABCA12 was expressed in the periderm of the early stage two-layered human fetal epidermis. After formation of a three-layered epidermis, ABCA12 staining
