The effects of Cu(II) and the stable nitroxide radical 4-OH-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (TPL) on reperfusion injury following global myocardial ischemia have been studied using the isolated rat heart model in the Langendorff configuration. Hearts were equilibrated with Krebs-Henseleit buffer (KH-buffer) for 10 min and subjected to 18 min of normothermic global ischemia. After 20 min reperfusion, hemodynamic parameters recovered as follows: ventricular developed pressure (77%), dP/dt (71%) and -dP/dt (80%), heart rate (91%), and work index (70%). We undertook a retrospective study of 82 patients with 128 diaphyseal fractures of the forearm who had been operated at our institution for their initial injury and subsequently had implant removal when the fractures had healed. The majority of the patients (97.5%) had no major complications after the removal of implants but 2 patients sustained a re-fracture of the same bone within 6 months after plate removal. Adequate palliation of dysphagia due to inoperable oesophageal carcinoma is difficult to achieve with low morbidity. Thirty-three patients (21 men and 12 women of mean(s.e.m.) age 69(2) years) with inoperable carcinoma of the oesophagus underwent insertion of self-expanding metal stents. The authors determined the magnesium content in the blood and hair by atomic mass absorption. The studied material included preschool children from a kindergarten situated in the center of Katowice (n = 60) and their older teenage brothers and sisters (n = 10). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of plastic-covered self-expanding metallic endoprostheses in patients with oesophageal perforation occurring during endoscopically guided dilatation prior to laser treatment for malignant obstruction.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Six patients with oesophageal perforation following laser treatment for malignant obstruction were treated. Four patients received the polyurethane-covered Wallstent endoprosthesis (Schneider SA, Bulach, Switzerland) and two patients the barbed polyethylene-covered Gianturco stent (William Cook, Europe).

The interactions between different heavy metal compounds which affect their cytotoxicity towards rabbit alveolar macrophages were investigated. Human epidermal keratinocytes which have been cultured were treated with the heavy metal ions of cadmium, mercury, copper and zinc. Cytotoxicity was measured either by protein estimation or by using the neutral red assay. Antioxidants were added in order to find out whether heavy metal-induced cytotoxicity is related to oxidative stress. After a short abstract about history and principles in the operative treatment of recurrent dislocation of the shoulder joint and after an illustration of disadvantages and complications in the operative technique described by Eden-Hybinette-Lange, which is favoured in the German speaking area, we are introducing a modification of this technique by use of an implant made from cancellous metal "Lübeck" instead of a bone block. In addition to the introduction of this new technique, first results in 14 patients undergoing this operation are shown up.

The authors report a case in which metallic Gianturco-Rosch stents were used to maintain patency of a surgically created cervical esophagocutaneous fistula. The patient was a young man with a schizoaffective disorder who underwent esophagogastrectomy as a result of multiple suicide attempts with lye ingestion. Surgical reconstruction was not possible due to extensive tissue damage. A surgically created cervical esophagocutaneous fistula allowed drainage of oral secretions but subsequently closed. The authors retrospectively evaluated 33 eye injuries due to metal missiles in 31 patients presenting to our emergency center over the last 3 years. Injuries occurred most frequently when the patients were grinding metal or working on their cars. The type of metal involved in the injury often dictates the type of ophthalmic reaction that will occur. A discussion of intraocular metallic foreign bodies with an emphasis on electroretinograms and metal analysis is presented.

The preparation and properties of the Cu(II) complex Cu(SAS)2.H2O are reported for the antiinflammatory drug Salsalate (SAS). The diffuse reflectance spectra and magnetic moments are consistent with a dinuclear structure as found for [Cu(aspirinate)2(H2O)]2. The Cu(II) complex exhibits an increased superoxide dismutase activity compared with the parent drug molecule in the nitroblue tetrazolium assay.

In a retrospective review, 82 children aged 3 to 16 years who had repair of pectus excavatum from 1963 to 1987 were divided into three groups according to type of repair: those without a metal substernal strut, those with a metal substernal strut, and those with a metal substernal strut within a Marlex envelope.
