Influence of catheter on urinary flow during urodynamic pressure-flow study in men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia.

UNLABELLED: Value of urodynamic pressure-flow studies in evaluation of bladder outlet obstruction has been recognized. Voiding during these studies is influenced by transurethral catheter, which is used for measurement of vesical pressure. We have investigated the influence of 7 F (2.3 mm) catheter on flow rate during pressure-flow study as a potential cause of misclassification. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data of free urinary flow and pressure flow from 111 men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia were analyzed. Inclusion criteria for analysis: age over 45 years, total International Pros

A musculotendon contribution for multijoint hand control.

For multijoint arm control, intersegmental dynamic properties have been observed to play a significant role. This paper focuses on the contribution of viscoelastic musculotendon properties during coordinated hand movements. Specifically, the musculotendon passive stiffness torque is shown to be more than 90% of the total passive torque, based on two-link planar model dynamics, during repetitive hand movements. Furthermore, a large difference in the contribution to joint torque was observed depending on the relationship between wrist and finger phasic movements. With the wrist and finger in pha

Factor solution of the BPRS-expanded version in schizophrenic outpatients living in five European countries.

RATIONALE: The expanded version of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS-E) has improved the instrument's coverage and interrater reliability, but there is little knowledge on its subsyndromes. OBJECTIVES: To assess: (1) whether there are common underlying BPRS-E subscales in patients living in different countries and (2) if this is the case, whether these subscales behave the same in all populations and, if not, what are the differences over these populations. METHODS: Data are part of the EPSILON study, a collaborative project carried out in Denmark, England, Holland, Italy and Spain. A

An empirical study of the typology of bulimia nervosa and its spectrum variants.

BACKGROUND: There is an ongoing debate about the best way to classify eating disorders. This study examined potential subtypes of bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify subtypes of bulimic symptomatology, utilizing data from 234 respondents in a cohort of black and white young women ( n =2054). Participants were administered gated screening questions from the Eating Disorders Examination to determine DSM-IV diagnoses of eating disorders. RESULTS: A 3-class solution was judged best. Class 1, the "purger subtype" ( n =116), was characterized by vomiting, the

Static single-arm force generation with kinematic constraints.

Smooth, frictionless, kinematic constraints on the motion of a grasped object reduce the motion freedoms at the hand, but add force freedoms, that is, force directions that do not affect the motion of the object. We are studying how subjects make use of these force freedoms in static and dynamic manipulation tasks. In this study, subjects were asked to use their right hand to hold stationary a manipulandum being pulled with constant force along a low-friction linear rail. To accomplish this task, subjects had to apply an equal and opposite force along the rail, but subjects were free to apply

Midair collisions: limitations of the see-and-avoid concept in civil aviation.

INTRODUCTION: Midair collisions cause loss of life and property and undermine general aviation; they also represent failures of the see-and-avoid concept in air traffic control. This study identifies limitations of the see-and-avoid concept. METHODS: Analysis of National Transportation Safety Board data on 159 U.S. civil aviation midair collisions and limitations of the see-and-avoid concept. RESULTS: On average, there were 15.6 midair collisions annually from 1991 through 2000. At least one aircraft was maneuvering in 88% of collisions, and both in 70%. There were 77% that involved arrival

Investigation of the efficiency of existing air pollution monitoring sites in the state of Kuwait.

The use of mathematical modelling for investigation of the efficiency of existing monitoring sites for the impact of SO(2) emissions from power stations in the state of Kuwait is described. The Industrial Source Complex Short Term (ISCST3) model is utilised to obtain the spatial and temporal variations of SO(2) over residential areas. Statistical comparison between the 50 highest daily measured and predicted SO(2) concentrations at six monitoring sites shows that the model is capable of generating results with accuracy of 60--94%. An important conclusion of this work is that the existing locat

Relationship between gait biomechanics and inversion sprains: a prospective study of risk factors.

This prospective study determined gait related risk factors for inversion sprains in 223 physical education students. Static lower leg alignment was determined, and 3D-kinematics combined with plantar pressure profiles were collected. After evaluation, the same sports physician registered all sports injuries during the next 6-18 months. During this period, 21 subjects had an inversion sprain, one of whom had a bilateral sprain. Twenty-two ankles, 12 left and 10 right comprised the inversion sprain group and both feet of 36 non-injured subjects acted as controls. Comparison of the two groups re

Comparison of mathematical model predictions to experimental data of fatigue and performance.

As part of the "Fatigue and Performance Modeling Workshop," six modeling teams made predictions for temporal profiles of fatigue and performance in five different scenarios. One scenario was based on a laboratory study of fatigue and performance during 88 h of extended wakefulness with or without nap opportunities. Another scenario was based on a field study of alertness in freight locomotive engineers. Two scenarios were based on laboratory studies with various conditions of chronic sleep restriction and recovery. There was a theoretical scenario for future ultra-long-range flight operations

The structure of negative self-statements in children and adolescents: a confirmatory factor-analytic approach.

The aim of this study was to examine the nature and organization of a range of negative self-statements in children and adolescents, using a structural equations/confirmatory factor-analytic approach. A community sample of 978 children aged 7-16 years completed a questionnaire about the frequency with which they experienced a broad range of negative automatic thoughts. The outcome of comparative modeling provided strongest support for a model in which 4 distinct cognitive factors were all related to a single higher order factor. The 4 lower order factors related to cognitions on social threat,

The structure of self-reported emotional experiences: a mixed-effects Poisson factor model.

Multivariate count data are commonly analysed by using Poisson distributions with varying intensity parameters, resulting in a random-effects model. In the analysis of a data set on the frequency of different emotion experiences we find that a Poisson model with a single random effect does not yield an adequate fit. An alternative model that requires as many random effects as emotion categories requires high-dimensional integration and the estimation of a large number of parameters. As a solution to these computational problems, we propose a factor-analytic Poisson model and show that a two-di

An action model of socially disruptive behaviors committed by persons with severe mental illness: the role of self-reported childhood abuse and suspiciousness-hostility.

Espousing an Action Theory approach (Brandstadter, 1998; Lerner, 1982), the authors hypothesized that socially disruptive behaviors committed by people with severe mental illness will be at least partly influenced by incidents of childhood sexual and physical abuse. They further hypothesized that this effect of child abuse on disruptive behaviors in severe mental illness will be mediated by patients' suspiciousness and hostility. Structural equation modeling analyses conducted on data collected from 109 people with severe mental illness provided support for this mediating model. Our results en

Distribution of radiation-induced exchange aberrations in all human chromosomes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the DNA-proportional distribution of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations for all chromosomes of a male and a female human karyotype. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Metaphases were prepared from whole blood cultures obtained from two healthy donors and set up after irradiation with 3 Gy 220 kV X-rays. Single whole-chromosome FISH painting simultaneously with pancentromeric DNA painting were performed separately for each chromosome of the human karyotype. One thousand exclusively first-division metaphases were analysed per chromosome and donor. After statistical analysis, t

Generalized semiparametrically structured ordinal models.

Semiparametrically structured models are defined as a class of models for which the predictors may contain parametric parts, additive parts of covariates with an unspecified functional form, and interactions which are described as varying coefficients. In the case of an ordinal response the complexity of the predictor is determined by different sorts of effects. Global effects and category-specific effects are distinguished; the latter allow the effect to vary across response categories. A general framework is developed in which global as well as category-specific effects may have unspecified

The cognitive-behavioral model of bulimia nervosa: a direct evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: This study represented the first attempt to directly evaluate Fairburn et al's (1986) cognitive-behavioral model of bulimia nervosa--the model on which the most widely used treatment for bulimia nervosa is based. METHOD: The major predictions of the model were tested using structural equation modeling. Data were collected from the responses of 526 subjects to a number of self-report measures. RESULTS: The factors of self-esteem, overconcern with weight and shape, and dietary restraint accounted for a large proportion of the variance in binge eating and purging. The key pathway in

Inherited risk factors for venous thromboembolism: implications for clinical practice.

Each year, thrombosis in the deep veins of the lower extremities occurs in 1 of every 1000 Americans (1). Although most cases of venous thrombosis are not fatal, death from pulmonary embolism can be expected in 1% to 2% of all patients, and as many as 25% of patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT) will suffer the chronic effects of postthrombotic syndrome. Thus, identification of high-risk patients with genetic predispositions to thrombosis is an important clinical goal, particularly among individuals with recurrent DVT.

Level of Activity in Profound/Severe Mental Retardation (LAPMER): a Rasch-derived scale of disability.

Classification of Mental Retardation (MR) into severe and profound is based on IQ threshold (<35 and 20% respectively) and on quite generic descriptions of deficits in adaptive behavior. The LAPMER scale (after Level of Activity in Profound/severe Mental Retardation) was developed as a measure of severity through observed behavior in adult patients. The Rasch analysis (RA, in its rating scale model) was adopted as a guide for selection of items, conceptualization of item levels, and validation of the overall instrument. The RA provides estimates on a continuum measure corresponding to the disc
