Identifying Diffuse Axonal Injury by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight: A New Method for Pathological Observation.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the diffuse axonal injury (DAI) of rat through screening out differentially expressed proteins which may represent potential biomarkers by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) imaging mass spectrometry (IMS), which could make a contribution for the research of forensic pathology. METHODS: A total of 15 brainstem sections of rats (10 with and 5 without DAI) were conducted by MALDI-TOF IMS. Specific protein expression patterns were obtained for normal and DAI regions within the tissue sections. "Supervised Neural N

Associated anomalies with neural tube defects in fetal autopsies.

Neural tube defects (NTD), the consequences of aberrant neural tube closure during embryogenesis, have been mostly investigated in terms of their high prevalence, rate of mortalities and serious morbidities. A proper prenatal outcome counseling of couples coming across a fetal anomaly necessitates the detection and categorization of the primer abnormality, all the co-existing malformations. The aim of this work is to study the incidence and relevance of associated malformations in order to offer a complete pathology report with a true diagnosis. In this study, among 542 fetal autopsy 62 (%11.4

Functional MRI of working memory and selective attention in vibrotactile frequency discrimination.

BACKGROUND: Focal lesions of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobe may interfere with tactile working memory and attention. To characterise the neural correlates of intact vibrotactile working memory and attention, functional MRI was conducted in 12 healthy young adults. Participants performed a forced-choice vibrotactile frequency discrimination task, comparing a cue stimulus of fixed frequency to their right thumb with a probe stimulus of identical or higher frequency. To investigate working memory, the time interval between the 2 stimuli was pseudo-randomized (either 2 or 8 s). To investi

Paternal organic solvent exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Organic solvents are widely used, but conflicting reports exist concerning paternal exposure and adverse pregnancy outcomes. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the risks of spontaneous abortions (SAs) and major malformations (MMs) after paternal exposure to organic solvents. METHODS: Medline, Toxline, Reprotox, and Embase from 1966 to 2003 were searched. Two independent reviewers searched for cohort and case-control studies in any language on adult human males exposed chronically to any organic solvent. Two non-blinded independent extractors used a standardized form for data e

Segmental neurofibromatosis follows blaschko's lines or dermatomes depending on the cell line affected: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Segmental neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) has the characteristic features of generalized NF-1 but is isolated to a particular segment of the body. Segmental NF-1 results from a postzygotic mutation during embryogenesis in the NF-1 gene on chromosome 17. The embryologic timing of the mutation and cell types affected predict the clinical phenotype. OBJECTIVE: We present a case of a 52-year-old woman with segmental neurofibromas isolated to the right cheek and neck. We review the recent literature on the genetic and cellular differences between the various clinical manifestations of

Alterations in the oligodendrocyte lineage, myelin, and white matter in adult mice lacking the chemokine receptor CXCR2.

Oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPC) proliferation and migration are critical for the development of myelin in the central nervous system (CNS). Previous studies showed that localized expression of the chemokine CXCL1 signals through the receptor CXCR2 to inhibit the migration and enhance the proliferation of spinal cord OPCs during development. Here, we report structural and functional alterations in the adult CNS of Cxcr2-/- mice. In Cxcr2-/- adult mice, we observed regional alterations in the density of oligodendrocyte lineage cells in Cxcr2-/- adult mice, with decreases in the cortex and a

Visual cortical regions show sufficient test-retest reliability while salience regions are unreliable during emotional face processing.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies frequently use emotional face processing tasks to probe neural circuitry related to psychiatric disorders and treatments with an emphasis on regions within the salience network (e.g., amygdala). Findings across previous test-retest reliability studies of emotional face processing have shown high variability, potentially due to differences in data analytic approaches. The present study comprehensively examined the test-retest reliability of an emotional faces task utilizing multiple approaches to region of interest (ROI) analysis and by examining vo

Noninvasive cerebellar stimulation and behavioral interventions: A crucial synergy for post-stroke motor rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Improvement of functional movements after supratentorial stroke occurs through spontaneous biological recovery and training-induced reorganization of remnant neural networks. The cerebellum, through its connectivity with the cortex, brainstem and spinal cord, is actively engaged in both recovery and reorganization processes within the cognitive and sensorimotor systems. Noninvasive cerebellar stimulation (NiCBS) offers a safe, clinically feasible and potentially effective way to modulate the excitability of spared neural networks and promote movement recovery after supratentorial s

The impact of bilateral vagotomy on the physostigmine-induced airway constriction in ferrets.

Vagal innervations have a great role in the respiratory function and are the main route of signal transmission from respiratory neural centers into the trachea and others conducting airways. We have investigated the role of central mechanisms related to vagal neural pathways and the cholinergic outflow in tracheobronchial smooth muscle tone and lung mechanics parameters. Parameters of lung mechanics such as lung resistance (RL), dynamic compliance (Cdyn) and pressure in bypassed tracheal segment (Ptseg) were measured before and after vagotomy and asphyxia test. Before vagotomy (BV), the contro

Therapeutic ultrasound for the treatment of demyelinating diseases.

Demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, result from the progressive loss of myelin sheaths in the central and peripheral nervous systems, leading to impaired neural conduction and disability. Current disease-modifying therapies focus on immunosuppression to limit inflammation but fail to restore lost myelin. This lack of regenerative capacity underscores the need for strategies that actively promote remyelination. Recent advances highlight neuromodulation, and in particular low-intensity ultrasound (US), as a promising approach to stimulate both neuronal activity and glial response…

Coupling motor evoked potentials and brain [18F]FDG-PET in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: preliminary findings on disease severity.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is primarily clinical, supported by the electromyographic examination to reveal signs of lower motor neuron damage. Identifying reliable markers of upper motor neuron (UMN) involvement is challenging. On this regard, the role of transcranial magnetic stimulation-induced motor-evoked potentials (TMS-MEPs), and its relationship with UMN burden, is still under investigation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of TMS-MEPs in delineating the neurophysiological UMN damage, and to determine the relationship between TMS-MEPs and [18F]FD

Pathogenic NR2F1 variants cause a developmental ocular phenotype recapitulated in a mutant mouse model.

Pathogenic NR2F1 variants cause a rare autosomal dominant neurodevelopmental disorder referred to as the Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf Optic Atrophy Syndrome. Although visual loss is a prominent feature seen in affected individuals, the molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to visual impairment are still poorly characterized. We conducted a deep phenotyping study on a cohort of 22 individuals carrying pathogenic NR2F1 variants to document the neurodevelopmental and ophthalmological manifestations, in particular the structural and functional changes within the retina and the optic nerve, which

Reliability of diaphragmatic motor-evoked potentials induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation.

The diaphragmatic motor-evoked potential (MEP) induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) permits electrophysiological assessment of the cortico-diaphragmatic pathway. Despite the value of TMS for investigating diaphragm motor integrity in health and disease, reliability of the technique has not been established. The study aim was to determine within- and between-session reproducibility of surface electromyogram recordings of TMS-evoked diaphragm potentials. Fifteen healthy young adults participated (6 females, age = 29 ± 7 yr). Diaphragm activation was determined by gradually increasi

Effects of Vagal Nerve Stimulation on Ganglionated Plexi Nerve Activity and Ventricular Rate in Ambulatory Dogs With Persistent Atrial Fibrillation.

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to test the hypothesis that low-level vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) reduces the ventricular rate (VR) during atrial fibrillation (AF) through the activation of the inferior vena cava (IVC)-inferior atrial ganglionated plexus nerve activity (IAGPNA). BACKGROUND: Increased IVC-IAGPNA can suppress atrioventricular node conduction and slow VR in canine models of AF. METHODS: Persistent AF was induced in 6 dogs and the IVC-IAGPNA, right vagal nerve activity, left vagal nerve activity, and an electrocardiogram were recorded. After persistent AF was documented, V

Design and optimization of lentiviral vectors for transfer of GALC expression in Twitcher brain.

BACKGROUND: Demyelination in globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD) is due to a deficiency of galactocerebrosidase (GALC) activity. Up to now, in vivo brain viral gene transfer of GALC showed modest impact on disease development in Twitcher mice, an animal model for GLD. Lentiviral vectors, which are highly efficient to transfer the expression of therapeutic genes in neurons and glial cells, have not been evaluated for direct cerebral therapy in GLD mice. METHODS: Lentiviral vectors containing the untagged cDNA or the hemagglutinin (HA)-tagged cDNA for the full-length mouse GALC sequence were gene
