Recent advances in the histopathological assessment of salivary disease.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland disease includes a wide range of unique and rare conditions that are treated by ear, nose and throat (ENT), oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFS) and oral medicine specialists. Histopathological diagnosis is pivotal to making a diagnosis and treatment planning. There is a vast range of conditions and controversies in the histopathological assessment of salivary gland diseases. Most colleagues in oral pathology and oral medicine work closely with the OMFS but might have missed some of the recent articles published by the speciality. METHODS: We reviewed articles tho

Advances in Treatment of Follicular Lymphoma.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is a heterogeneous disease with varying prognosis owing to differences in clinical, laboratory, and disease parameters. Although generally considered incurable, prognosis for early and advanced stage disease has improved because of therapeutic advances, several of which have resulted from elucidation of the biologic and molecular basis of the disease. The choice of treatment for FL is highly dependent on patient and disease characteristics. Several tools are available for risk stratification, although limitations in their routine clinical use exist. For limited disease

Epigenetics modifiers: potential hub for understanding and treating neurodevelopmental disorders from hypoxic injury.

BACKGROUND: The fetal brain is adapted to the hypoxic conditions present during normal in utero development. Relatively more hypoxic states, either chronic or acute, are pathologic and can lead to significant long-term neurodevelopmental sequelae. In utero hypoxic injury is associated with neonatal mortality and millions of lives lived with varying degrees of disability. MAIN BODY: Genetic studies of children with neurodevelopmental disease indicate that epigenetic modifiers regulating DNA methylation and histone remodeling are critical for normal brain development. Epigenetic modifiers are a

The Quality of Life and Psychosocial Implications of Cancer-Related Lower-Extremity Lymphedema: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Lower-extremity lymphedema (LEL) is a progressive, lifelong complication of cancer that places a substantial burden upon cancer survivors' quality of life (QOL) and psychosocial well-being. Despite its prevalence, cancer-related LEL is inconsistently diagnosed, treated, and poorly recognized by health care professionals. The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize and appraise the quantitative literature evaluating the impact of cancer-related LEL on patients' psychosocial well-being and QOL. Three databases (PubMed, PROQuest, and Scopus) were searched for observational research art

Microglia modulation by TGF-β1 protects cones in mouse models of retinal degeneration.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetically heterogenous group of eye diseases in which initial degeneration of rods triggers secondary degeneration of cones, leading to significant loss of daylight, color, and high-acuity vision. Gene complementation with adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors is one strategy to treat RP. Its implementation faces substantial challenges, however; for example, the tremendous number of loci with causal mutations. Gene therapy targeting secondary cone degeneration is an alternative approach that could provide a much-needed generic treatment for many patients with RP

Hidradenitis suppurativa in surgeons' practice: Prevalence and treatment approach according to the Hurley stage in Latvia.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, debilitating, and frequently misdiagnosed inflammatory skin disease that often requires surgical intervention. To assess the prevalence of HS patients in surgeons' practice and surgeons' approach to treating HS patients, we created a self-administered, Hurley stage-based questionnaire that was distributed during the Latvian Association of Surgeons meeting. Of the total 60 questionnaires distributed, 56 (93%) were collected and 53 (88%) of them were considered valid. Overall, 73.6% of the surgeons confirmed having seen patients with chronic

Evolving evidence in the treatment of primary and recurrent posterior cruciate ligament injuries, part 2: surgical techniques, outcomes and rehabilitation.

Isolated and combined posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries are associated with severe limitations in daily, professional, and sports activities as well as with devastating long-term effects for the knee joint. As the number of primary and recurrent PCL injuries increases, so does the body of literature, with high-quality evidence evolving in recent years. However, the debate about the ideal treatment approach such as; operative vs. non-operative; single-bundle vs. double-bundle reconstruction; transtibial vs. tibial inlay technique, continues. Ultimately, the goal in the treatment of PCL

Transient Effects of Cyclophosphamide on Basal Cell Proliferation of Olfactory Epithelia.

Cancer is often treated with broad-spectrum cytotoxic drugs that not only eradicate cancerous cells but also have detrimental side effects. One of these side effects, disruption of the olfactory system, impedes a patient's ability to smell, perceive flavor, and ultimately may interfere with their nutritional intake and recovery from cancer. Recent studies reported that the chemotherapy drug, cyclophosphamide (CYP), can damage gustatory epithelia and disrupt cell proliferation in olfactory epithelia. In this study, we asked if CYP altered globose and horizontal basal cell proliferation in the m

Histological Analysis of Reproductive System in Low-Dose Nonylphenol-treated F1 Female Mice.

Previously, we reported adverse effects of low-dose nonylphenol (NP) exposure on the reproductive parameters of F1 female mice. In the present study we further investigated the pathohistological effect of NP exposure on the reproductive organs in F1 female mice. NP exposures were continuously conducted from parental pre-mating period until the postnatal day (PND) 33 of F1 offspring for vaginal examination. Mice were sacrificed on PND 30 and the reproductive tissue weights were measured. The initial (at PND 21) body weights of the NP-50 group animals were significantly lower than those of contr

The Assessment of Steroid Injections as a Potential Risk Factor for Osteochondral Lesions in Children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Intra-articular corticosteroid injections (IACIs) are frequently used to suppress local inflammation, that is, in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). While systemic high-dosage corticosteroids are known to trigger osteonecrosis and result in osteochondral (OC) lesions, the effect of IACIs on joint cartilage and subchondral bone remains unclear. This study was conceived to analyze the coincidence of IACI and the subsequent manifestation of osteochondral lesions in a large cohort of pediatric JIA patients. DESIGN: Retrospective data assessment and comparative analysis

A pragmatic proposal for triaging DXA testing during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in huge disruption to healthcare provision, including to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) imaging. Increased waiting lists for DXA from the pandemic mean potential long and uncertain delays in treatment for osteoporosis. To address these increased waiting lists, we propose a rapid, simple, one-stop algorithm incorporating medication use (aromatase inhibitor, corticosteroid) and clinical risk stratification supplementing a standard FRAX assessment. Our pragmatic algorithm produces a recommendation to treat empirically, image with DXA, or observe. If appl

Correlates of trichomoniasis among female sex workers who inject drugs in two Mexico-US border cities.

This paper evaluates correlates of trichomoniasis among female sex workers who inject drugs (FSWIDs) in two Mexico-US border cities. HIV-negative FSWIDs aged 18 years or older were enrolled in a study between 2008 and 2010 in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez (Cd.), Mexico. All participants underwent a baseline interviewer-administered survey and did a rapid test for trichomoniasis. Using regression to estimate prevalence ratios, we examined sociodemographics, sex work characteristics, sexual health and behavior, substance use, and police and violence exposures as potential correlates of trichomoniasi

Nitric Oxide-Releasing Insert for Disinfecting the Hub Region of Tunnel Dialysis Catheters.

The use of tunneled dialysis catheters (TDCs) for patients in need of hemodialysis treatments (HDs) causes a significant number of bloodstream infections (BSIs), with very few viable preventative/treatment methods. Use of antibiotics is relatively ineffective due to the development of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains and the inability to penetrate bacterial biofilms. Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenous gas molecule that has broad-spectrum antimicrobial/antibiofilm activity. In this study, the potential of creating a NO-releasing insert device that is attached onto the hub region cap of TDC
