Home-based infusion therapy for patients with Fabry disease.

Fabry disease is an inherited, progressive, life-threatening disease; therefore, lifelong therapy is needed. By replacing the deficient enzyme, disease progression may be delayed or halted, thereby avoiding serious complications. Hospital-based agalsidase therapy is generally perceived as inconvenient and home-based infusion therapy is greatly appreciated by patients, their families and healthcare professionals. Patients can get familiar with infusion therapy in a hospital setting and, if specific requirements are fulfilled, routine nurse-assisted infusion, or self-care, at the patient's home

The quality of parental consent for research with children: a prospective repeated measure self-report survey.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have ethical and legal responsibilities to ensure that individuals give informed consent to participate in research. The few studies of parental consent for paediatric research suggest there may be inadequate competence, information, understanding, or voluntariness for valid consent to occur. OBJECTIVES: To determine parents' level of understanding of the research study requirements and satisfaction with the informed consent process. PARTICIPANTS: English literate parents of children actively involved in research studies. METHODS: A repeated measures self-report surv

Critical care nurses' perceptions of workplace empowerment, magnet hospital traits and mental health.

The purpose of this study was to test Kanter's Theory (1977, 1993) of Structural Power in Organizations in a sample of Canadian critical care nurses. A secondary analysis of data from a larger descriptive correlational survey design was used to examine the relationships between perceived empowerment, perceived magnet hospital traits and critical care nurses' mental health (n = 75). The instruments in this study included the Conditions for Work Effectiveness Questionnaire II, the Job Activities Scale II, the Organizational Relationship Scale II, the Nurses Work Index-Revised, the Emotional Exha

The validity and reliability of the measurement of the concept 'expressed emotion' in the family members and nurses of Hong Kong patients with schizophrenia.

This study aimed to test the validity and reliability of three measures of expressed emotion in a sample of family members and nurses of Hong Kong Chinese people with schizophrenia. Little research has been done in Hong Kong in relation to family expressed emotion (EE) and schizophrenia so the present study set out to pilot some measures that could become reliable and valid measures for future clinical studies. The Adjective Check List (ACL) and the Family Attitude Scale (FAS) were compared to EE ratings obtained after a brief interview. The ratings were made based on the conceptual framework

Caring behaviours in cancer care in Greece. Comparison of patients', their caregivers' and nurses' perceptions.

PURPOSE: Although, within cancer nursing the concept of caring is central, there are limited studies comparing nurses', patients' and caregivers' views of care, especially in non-Anglo-Saxonic cultures. We explored and compared perceptions of caring behaviours by cancer patients, their caregivers, and nurses in Greece, as well as associations with demographic variables. METHODS: A descriptive correlational study with cross-sectional comparisons was conducted in three cancer hospitals in Attica, with a convenience sample of 138 patients receiving chemotherapy and their family caregivers and 72

Australian women and heart disease: trends, epidemiological perspectives and the need for a culturally competent research agenda.

Heart disease commonly manifests as acute coronary syndromes (unstable angina pectoris, or myocardial infarction) and heart failure (HF). These conditions are major causes of morbidity and mortality in Australia and internationally. Australian faces particular challenges in health care delivery given the cultural and ethnic diversity of society and unique issues related to rurality. These factors have significant implications for health care delivery. Following an acute cardiac event women have poorer outcomes: higher mortality rates, higher incidence of complications and greater psychological

Central venous catheters: a survey of ICU practices.

AIM: This paper describes the current infection control practices for CVC care and compares these to evidence-based practice guidelines. BACKGROUND: Intensive care patients with central venous catheters (CVCs) are at risk of catheter-related infection, which increases morbidity, mortality and health care costs. Infection control practices, including care of intravenous administration sets and catheter sites, are undertaken by nurses in an attempt to avoid infection. Although practice guidelines are available, infection control practices may vary between practitioners and institutions; however

Top Ten Tips Palliative Care Clinicians Should Know About Intentionally Interprofessional Collaboration.

Although high-quality and holistic specialty palliative care is delivered by an interprofessional team, little guidance is available to optimize approaches to and sustainment of such teamwork. This article supports individuals to practice at the top of their education, clinical training, and scope of practice while maximizing the functionality of the palliative care team as a whole. We intentionally use the term interprofessional rather than interdisciplinary to clarify that we are focused on collaboration of team members who represent multiple professions or occupations that require specializ

Listening to the Voice of Laryngeal Dystonia: Advocating from the Inside Out.

Some 29 million people in the United States have the neurological voice disorder spasmodic dysphonia (SD), a type of what is now more accurately called laryngeal dystonia (LD), characterized by an altered voice, the result of involuntary and intermittent contractions of the laryngeal muscles. This personal account details key facts about LD, as its etiology and treatment are still in research. It attests to how LD compromises communication and can threaten people's self-esteem, even their lives, and provides implications for nursing practice.

The early days of antibiotics.

Today most of us take antibiotics used in our everyday practice very much for granted. Few of us, indeed, have escaped being dosed with them at one time or another. Yet professionals of my generation, as nurses, medical students or doctors in the 1940's, will well remember our amazement at the seemingly miraculous recoveries we saw of desperately ill septic patients when Penicillin, dispensed in little ampoules of brown powder, first became generally available in civilian hospitals.

Managing the pain of primary and secondary dysmenorrhoea.

Dysmenorrhoea, pain during menstruation, affects 40-95 per cent of menstruating women, and has been reported as the most common causes of regular absenteeism among young women. There are two types of dysmenorrhoea: primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhoea is a painful menstruation with no detectable organic disease and is more common in adolescent women. Secondary dysmenorrhoea is painful menstruation that is frequently associated with a pelvic pathology. The symptoms that present with dysmenorrhoea, the management and treatment options that are available, and the implications for nursing

Common pediatric foot dermatoses.

The pediatric foot dermatoses known as tinea pedis, shoe dermatitis, and juvenile plantar dermatosis are seen commonly in clinical practice. A knowledge of the clinical presentations and causes of these disorders can help pediatric and family nurse practitioners identify, diagnose, and treat childhood rashes of the feet. The conventional view in pediatrics is that small children rarely have tinea pedis. However, a 1992 study disputes this claim. Any child who has an atypical or persistent foot rash will need a referral or consultation.

Contraception for midlife women.

Women wish to continue to be sexually active long after their desire to bear children. The risks associated with unintended pregnancy easily can be avoided by providing women with information about, and access to, contraceptives that are safe and effective. Because fertility naturally declines with age, different contraceptives may be more suitable for women toward the end of their reproductive years than were appropriate at periods of peak fertility. This article discusses the risks and benefits of various contraceptives for midlife women and the implications of this information on nursing pr

Maternal perception of first-born infants: a controlled comparative study of mothers of premature and full-term infants.

Mothers of premature infants monitored at home for apnea and mothers of full-term infants had significantly more positive perceptions of their infants than mothers of premature infants not monitored. Using the Brief Symptom Inventory 2 weeks after the infants went home from the hospital, the mothers of infants not monitored reported significantly more psychological symptoms than the other two groups. Maternal perceptions of their infants had not changed when interviewed 6 months later. Implications for nursing practice are discussed.
