The Physiological Requirements of and Nutritional Recommendations for Equestrian Riders.

Equestrian sport is under-researched within the sport science literature, creating a possible knowledge vacuum for athletes and support personnel wishing to train and perform in an evidence-based manner. This review aims to synthesise available evidence from equitation, sport, and veterinary sciences to describe the pertinent rider physiology of equestrian disciplines. Estimates of energy expenditure and the contribution of underpinning energy systems to equestrian performance are used to provide nutrition and hydration recommendations for competition and training in equestrian disciplines. Association between Japanese balanced diet and frailty: the modifying effects of social connections in Japanese older adults.

BACKGROUND: While the Japanese balanced die is a nutritional-related effort recommended in Japan’s health promotion policies, evidence about its association with frailty is scarce. It’s also worth noting the role of social context, given its wide associations with dietary behaviors and frailty. The present study examined the association between an unbalanced diet and frailty, and whether social connections modify this association in older Japanese adults. METHODS: Data were collected by a cross-sectional survey of 15,302 community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 65 in Osaka, Japan, 2022. Frailty was me

Growth monitoring and promotion: review of evidence of impact.

UNLABELLED: [Table: see text] SUMMARY: The rationale for growth monitoring and promotion is persuasive but even in the 1980s the appropriateness of growth monitoring programmes was being questioned. The concerns centred largely around low participation rates, poor health worker performance and inadequacies in health system infrastructure that constrained effective growth‐promoting action. More recently there has been a call for a general review of the impact of large‐scale growth monitoring and promotion programmes to determine if the investments are justified. The launch of the new World Hea

Vitamin D Status and Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: Biological Rationale, Clinical Associations and Limitations of Current Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs). Whether vitamin D status influences tumor aggressiveness and clinical outcomes remains uncertain. This review examines current evidence on the prevalence, determinants, clinical associations, and clinical relevance of vitamin D deficiency in GEP-NENs. METHODS: A narrative and critical review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Clinical studies, observational cohorts, translational research, selected mechanistic stud

Eating Experiences During Cancer Treatment in Adolescents and Young Adults: A Systematic Literature Review and Meta-Synthesis.

Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 15-39 with cancer face distinct challenges during treatment, with eating consistently emerging as one of the most distressing and underrecognized concerns. At a critical life stage, AYAs must navigate illness-related consequences that profoundly affect well-being. Eating reflects these broader challenges and is identified as a key issue requiring health care attention. To address this, we synthesized evidence on AYAs' eating experiences and well-being during mealtime-related activities to inform health care practice. Qualitative and mixed-method studies

Concerned but confused: Australian consumers' awareness, understanding, and recognition of ultra-processed foods.

Calls to reduce ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption through population health strategies such as front-of-pack labelling are increasing. Gaining insight into consumer perceptions may help inform effective strategies in this area. This study explored (i) Australian adults' awareness, understanding, and recognition of UPFs and (ii) their interest in front-of-pack labelling to signpost UPFs. Twelve online focus groups were conducted with 112 Australian adults (49 % women, 78 % residing in metropolitan areas). Discussions covered food selection criteria, familiarity with 'processed' and 'ultra-

Hospital care experiences of female relatives caring for patients with post-stroke dysphagia during the COVID-19: a qualitative study in China.

BACKGROUND: Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Chinese hospitals are forced to impose stringent regulations, which unavoidably affect patients with stroke who need continued rehabilitation and long-term disease treatment. However, there is a lack of qualitative studies in the literature on female relative caregivers of hospitalised patients who had a stroke with dysphagia during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to explore the experiences of female Chinese caregivers living in the hospital with patients with post-stroke dysphagia during the pandemic. DESIGN: We conducted a

Extensive wounds of the spine: a comprehensive approach to debridement and reconstruction.

Extensive wounds involving the spine (greater than three vertebral segments exposed) may threaten its indispensable roles of biomechanical support and vital neurologic function. Although there have been select reports of specific flap applications in this body region in the reconstructive surgical literature, there has been a paucity of comprehensive descriptions of pertinent anatomy, pathophysiology, and the perioperative care of such patients--including the degree to which the spine is suited to aggressive debridement. Four patients with complex spine wounds involving greater than three vert

Factors affecting postoperative ventilatory support in patients with cardiac cachexia.

Factors affecting early v late weaning from ventilatory support after cardiac surgery were retrospectively compared in 15 patients with cardiac cachexia. These patients were divided into two groups based on the duration of postoperative ventilatory support, group I (n = 7) less than two days (22 +/- 8 hours) and group II (n = 8) over three days (140 +/- 125 hours). Findings in 14 randomly selected patients without cardiac cachexia who underwent cardiac valve replacement were also examined. Comparisons were made between the groups in regards to the following parameters: (1) preoperatively: anth

Parenteral dextrose during refeeding is associated with electrolyte deficiencies in anorexia nervosa: a route-specific analysis of oral and parenteral nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Although oral feeding is generally preferred over parenteral nutrition during refeeding in patients with anorexia nervosa, parenteral nutrition often plays a critical role in ensuring adequate nutritional support during early refeeding and preventing underfeeding syndrome. However, few studies have examined route-specific effects on refeeding-related electrolyte deficiencies while accounting for the actual caloric intake delivered via each route. METHODS: We retrospectively examined 208 admissions from 98 patients with anorexia nervosa who were hospitalized in the psychiatric ward…

Setting research priorities for maternal, newborn, child health and nutrition in India by engaging experts from 256 indigenous institutions contributing over 4000 research ideas: a CHNRI exercise by ICMR and INCLEN.

BACKGROUND: Health research in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) is often driven by donor priorities rather than by the needs of the countries where the research takes place. This lack of alignment of donor's priorities with local research need may be one of the reasons why countries fail to achieve set goals for population health and nutrition. India has a high burden of morbidity and mortality in women, children and infants. In order to look forward toward the Sustainable Development Goals, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the INCLEN Trust International (INCLEN) empl

Use of supportive care services and advance care planning among early phase oncology clinical trial participants.

BACKGROUND: Early phase clinical trials (EP-CTs) investigate novel therapeutic approaches for patients with cancer, but little is known about patterns of supportive care service utilization and advance care planning (ACP) in this population. We sought to characterize these features in an EP-CT population and evaluate associations among receipt of supportive care services and ACP documentation. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic health record (EHR) of consecutive patients enrolled in EP-CTs at Massachusetts General Hospital from 01/01/17-12/30/19.
