Recitation and listening to nursery rhymes in the familiarization with a literacy language in kindergarteners: Not kids' stuff.

A large linguistic distance exists between spoken Arabic and the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) the literary language (a diglosia). Novice readers, therefore, struggle with the complex orthography of Arabic as well as the mastering of MSA. Here, we tested whether structured activities in MSA would advance kindergarteners' MSA aptitude by the end of the school year. We examined two issues: (a) whether reciting nursery rhymes in MSA would be more effective in promoting language and preliteracy skills in kindergarteners compared to listening to the same texts, and (b) whether there are additional a

The use of evaluative expressions in the narratives of adolescents with a history of SLI.

Typically, young children diagnosed with specific language impairment (SLI; also called Developmental language disorder, DLD) have been found to show weakness in narrative development, and such weakness has been judged to be unlikely to resolve over time. However, developmental outcomes for adolescents with a prior SLI diagnosis have not been thoroughly studied. In particular, studies on the evaluative aspects of narratives of such persons are almost non-existent. Here we examine the question whether narrative evaluation of adolescents formerly diagnosed with SLI remains problematic into adole

Kinematic Analysis of Smiles in the Healthy Pediatric Population Using 3-Dimensional Motion Capture.

INTRODUCTION: Facial normalcy, as measured with 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional photographs, has been documented in the healthy pediatric population. However, static images convey far from a complete representation of an individual's daily interactions with peers. Craniofacial surgery induces changes to soft or osseous tissues and thereby affects dynamic facial expression. To-date, there has not been rigorous, dynamic quantification of normal facial expression. In this study, we used 4-dimensional (4D) imaging to assess the facial expression of healthy children to provide a normative reference

Obese Adolescents Show Reduced Cognitive Processing Speed Compared with Healthy Weight Peers.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity and obesity-associated diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) continue to rise. Obesity has been linked to structural and functional brain abnormalities, particularly in the frontal lobe. METHODS: One hundred sixty-two adolescents (aged 19.53 ± 1.53 years) underwent medical, neurocognitive, and brain magnetic resonance imaging assessments. Participants were either healthy weight (BMI <25.0 kg/m2 or BMI percentile <85%) or obese (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m2 or BMI percentile ≥95%). We evaluated frontal lobe cognitive functions and the size of the corpus callosum (CC). RESULT

Acoustic Analysis of Persian Vowels in Cochlear Implant Users: A Comparison With Hearing-impaired Children Using Hearing Aid and Normal-hearing Children.

OBJECTIVE: Vowel production in essence is auditorily controlled; hence, the role of the auditory feedback in vowel production is very important. The purpose of this study was to compare formant frequencies and vowel space in Persian-speaking deaf children with cochlear implantation (CI), hearing-impaired children with hearing aid (HA), and their normal-hearing (NH) peers. METHODS: A total of 40 prelingually children with hearing impairment and 20 NH groups participated in this study. Participants were native Persian speakers. The average of first formant frequency (F1) and second formant freq

Motor impairments related to brain injury timing in early hemiparesis. Part II: abnormal upper extremity joint torque synergies.

BACKGROUND: Extensive neuromotor development occurs early in human life, and the timing of brain injury may affect the resulting motor impairment. In Part I of this series, it was demonstrated that the distribution of weakness in the upper extremity depended on the timing of brain injury in individuals with childhood-onset hemiparesis. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to characterize how timing of brain injury affects joint torque synergies, or losses of independent joint control. METHOD: Twenty-four individuals with hemiparesis were divided into 3 groups based on the timing of their in

Buccal exposure to human papillomavirus type 16 is a common yet transitory event of childhood.

High-risk human papillomaviruses, such as type 16 (HPV-16), are established etiological agents for cervical carcinoma. In most cases, this virus is transmitted sexually, though can also be spread from mother to infant at delivery. We have demonstrated previously a high prevalence ( approximately 52%) of HPV-16 DNA in the mouths of prepubertal children, albeit with low levels of transcription [Rice et al., 2000]. We investigated whether childhood buccal infections with HPV-16 are persistent or transient and whether children became infected through contact with their immediate family members. Tw

The physical and psychomotor development of children conceived by IVF and exposed to high-frequency vaginal ultrasonography (6.5 MHz) in the first trimester of pregnancy.

We examined the physical and psychomotor development of 33 infants conceived by in vitro fertilization (IVF) who were exposed to high-frequency transvaginal ultrasonography (HFTVS) (6.5 MHz) in the first trimester of pregnancy. The study group was composed of 21 singletons and six sets of twins. Thirty-three non-IVF controls were matched for birth weight, gestational age, sex, birth order, order in multiple delivery, mode of delivery, age at examination and parental age and education. Forty-five IVF infants who were not exposed to HFTVS and their matched controls also served as comparison grou

Developing a systems-based programme theory for reducing night-time interactive electronic device use and improving sleep among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent night-time use of interactive electronic devices (IEDs) is increasingly linked to poor sleep, mental health challenges, and reduced academic performance. However, existing interventions often overlook the complex systems shaping these behaviours. This study presents a first-of-its-kind systems-based programme theory for CLOCK OFF - a peer influence intervention aimed at reducing night-time IED use and improving adolescent sleep - created through novel participatory mapping activities and analyses, which involved adolescents, parents and teachers. METHODS: We conducted f

"I didn't believe it was real": a qualitative exploration of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among key populations living with HIV/AIDS in Rivers State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccination remains one of the most effective interventions against the pandemic; however, hesitancy continues to impede equitable coverage, particularly among key populations. In Nigeria, MSM, FSW, and PWID face heightened vulnerability to both HIV/AIDS and COVID-19, but remain underrepresented in vaccination research. Rivers State reported one of the highest numbers of confirmed cases and deaths in the southern region. The state also has a relatively high HIV prevalence rate and houses several key population OSSs. This study explored COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among thes

Prioritising place-based strategies for sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection prevention: protocol for the Zingatia Maskan interactive, convergent mixed-methods study in Nairobi, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Associations between individual-level 'risk behaviours' and sexually transmitted and blood-borne infection (STBBI) acquisition are well documented; however, increasing evidence highlights the importance of place in shaping ecologies of STBBI risk and safety and access to relevant services. HIV prevention efforts have largely focused on population-based approaches resulting in siloed programming that ignores how sex work locations shape risk and safety for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), female sex workers (FSW) and men who congregate in these spaces. Marked heterogeneity

The Intersection of Disability, Race, Ethnicity, and Financial Background on Food Insecurity Among Medical Students.

PURPOSE: Food insecurity is negatively associated with college students' well-being and academic performance. Little is known about the prevalence of food insecurity among medical students. This study examined variations in food insecurity among medical students at 15 schools, analyzing differences by disability status, race, ethnicity, and financial background. METHOD: Between March-October 2024, 1,659 students across 15 MD-granting medical schools completed an online survey. Over the past 12 months, food insecurity was assessed using the 10-item U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module. A

"The silent strain: Exploring self-image and mental health in braced adolescents with scoliosis": a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity. It can create surface deformities that affect adolescents' psychosocial health. Bracing is a non-surgical method to prevent curve progression and avoid surgery. However, the psychosocial effects of long-term brace use during adolescence are often overlooked. issues like decreased self-esteem, social withdrawal, and appearance anxiety may hinder compliance and impact quality of life. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review used PubMed, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect to identify studies from 2015 to 2025. It

Medical student anxiety and depression in the COVID-19 Era: Unique needs of underrepresented students.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant morbidity, mortality, and mental health consequences. Few studies have examined the mental toll of COVID-19 on United States (US) medical students, who experience greater rates of depression and anxiety than the general population. Students who identify as underrepresented in medicine (URM) may experience even greater mental health adversities than non-URM peers. This study examines COVID-19's impact on preclinical medical student anxiety and depression and unique challenges disproportionately affecting URM students during the initial ph
