Capillary blood flow in acute branch retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: To study retinal capillary blood flow during the acute stage of induced branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) in the feline retina and the effect of systemic blood pressure during this event. METHODS: Known fractions of the animal blood cells were labeled by a fluorescent marker and tracked by an electro-optical device as they flowed within the retinal microcirculation. Branch retinal vein occlusion was induced by photocoagulation of a large vein at the optic disk rim. The findings were video recorded and analyzed by computerized image processing. RESULTS: Reversed capillary blood ce

Sympathetic ophthalmia associated with pars plana vitrectomy without antecedent penetrating trauma.

PURPOSE: To evaluate, describe, and categorize the clinical presentation, clinical course, histopathology, and response to therapy in patients without a history of penetrating ocular trauma who developed sympathetic ophthalmia following pars plana vitrectomy. METHODS: The records of patients without a history of trauma who underwent pars plana vitrectomy and developed sympathetic ophthalmia were retrospectively reviewed. Cases were analyzed with respect to clinical presentation, fluorescein angiographic findings, anatomic and visual outcomes, histopathology, and response to therapy. RESULTS:

Foveal ectopia in X-linked retinoschisis.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the position of the foveal center in patients with X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) and controls and estimated the frequency of foveal ectopia in XLRS. METHOD: Fundus photographs of 23 patients with XLRS and 25 controls were reviewed. The position of the foveal center relative to the vertical center of the optic disk was determined from magnified images and expressed as the angle between the disk and foveal centers, relative to the horizontal meridian. The shortest distance between the foveal and disk centers was also measured, using the horizontal disk diameter (

Diffuse unilateral hemorrhagic retinopathy associated with accidental perinatal strangulation. A clinicopathologic report.

OBJECTIVE: To report an unusual case of diffuse retinal hemorrhage associated with strangulation in a neonate with a tightly wrapped nuchal cord around his neck at birth who was noted to have eyelid and subconjunctival petechial hemorrhages upon delivery. METHODS: Clinical diagnostic examination as well as postmortem gross and histopathologic examination of ocular and central nervous system structures was performed. RESULTS: Funduscopic and gross pathologic examination of the eyes revealed extensive unilateral retinal hemorrhage of the right eye only. This was corroborated by histopathologic

Indocyanine green angiographic findings in Behçet disease.

BACKGROUND: The authors studied indocyanine green (ICG) angiographic features in proven cases of ocular Behçet disease. METHODS: Twenty-six patients (18 male, 8 female; mean age 39.9 +/- 8.9 years) with Behçet disease underwent simultaneous ICG and fluorescein angiography (FA) according to a uveitis angiographic standard protocol. Patients were divided into three groups based on their ocular disease duration: Group A (9 patients), less than 3-year duration; Group B (8 patients), 4- to 10-year duration; Group C (9 patients), more than 10-year duration. The relation between ICG angiographic fin

The effect of pars plana vitrectomy in the management of Fuchs heterochromic cyclitis.

PURPOSE: Fuchs heterochromic cyclitis (FHC) is characterized by a unilateral chronic iridocyclitis of insidious onset and uncertain cause. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of vitreous surgery in patients with FHC and clinically significant visual symptoms caused by inflammatory vitreous debris. METHODS: This study was a review of 12 eyes of 12 consecutive patients with FHC who underwent pars plana vitrectomy for visually significant vitreous opacities. Cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation had been performed on four eyes preoperatively. Four eyes had a concomitant len

Immune recovery vitritis and uveitis in AIDS: clinical predictors, sequelae, and treatment outcomes.

PURPOSE: To determine 1) clinical predictors of an inflammatory syndrome associated with cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis (immune recovery vitritis or uveitis [IRV or IRU]); 2) clinical sequelae of IRV; and 3) the effect of corticosteroid treatment on visual acuity. METHODS: A cohort study from the AIDS Ocular Research Unit of the University of California, San Diego, and a case series from the Cleveland Clinic consisted of patients who had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and inactive CMV retinitis who responded to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) with CD4 T-lymphocyte levels >60

Highly active antiretroviral therapy-associated regression of cytomegalovirus retinitis: long-Term results in a small case series.

PURPOSE: To report the stability of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis lesions that have undergone regression in the absence of specific anti-CMV medications owing to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)-generated immune recovery. METHODS: The initial examination revealed HAART-associated regression of CMV retinitis lesions in eight subjects at two institutions. Patients were monitored for recurrences of CMV activity. CD4+ T-lymphocyte counts and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) loads were measured. RESULTS: All patients had positiv
