The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) is one of the most frequently employed measures for assessing pain-related fear in back pain patients. Despite its widespread use, there is relatively little data to support the psychometric properties of the English version of this scale. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the English version of the TSK in a sample of chronic low back pain patients. Item analysis revealed that four items possessed low item total correlations (4, 8, 12, 16) and four items had response trends that deviated from a pattern of normal distribution (4, 9, 1

This case report deals with the day care treatment of two seven- and eight-year-old siblings with elective mutism. Their treatment entails a combination of psychopharmacological and intensive behavior therapy. The multimodal therapeutic process is presented together with continuing psychosocial steps. Behavioral intervention focuses on building verbal expressive capacity, reducing speech anxiety in social situations and generalization to non-therapeutic situations. The case report is discussed in the context of the current literature on elective mutism.

BACKGROUND: Conditioning theories, stress theories and social psychological theories each suggest that negative life experiences should influence phobia onset, though the patterns of effects suggested by each type of theory are different. Few previous studies have estimated the effects of a broad enough range of life experiences on onset of multiple types of phobia to evaluate patterns of effects.
METHODS: Retrospective data on life experiences and history of phobia from a representative sample of persons 15-54 years old from the US population (the National Comorbidity Survey) are analyzed us

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship of maternal interpersonal violence-related posttraumatic stress disorder (IPV-PTSD), associated neural activity in response to mother-child relational stimuli, and child psychopathology indicators at child ages 12-42 months and one year later. The study tested the hypothesis that decreased maternal neural activity in regions that subserve emotion regulation would be associated with child symptoms associated with emotional dysregulation at both time points. Functional magnetic resonance imaging of 42 mothers with or without violence-exposure

There has been considerable controversy about whether generalized social phobia (GSP) and avoidant personality disorder (APD) are redundant diagnostic categories. In light of the ongoing controversy, more data are needed to help determine whether GSP and APD are independent constructs. Data were obtained from 335 people seeking treatment for GSP at a two site clinical trial. Indicators of GSP and APD were obtained along with assessments of demographic factors, level of functioning, and indicators of related psychopathology. Confirmatory factor analyses of indicators of GSP and APD suggested a

Although there is evidence that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is effective in the treatment for fear of flying (FOF), there are no studies that specifically examine which skills taught in treatment are being used by clients after treatment is completed. This study examines whether participants report using skills taught in treatment for FOF after treatment is completed and whether the reported use of these skills is associated with reduced flying anxiety in the face of fear-relevant event, the September 11th terrorist attacks, and over the long-term. One hundred fifteen participants were

OBJECTIVES: Fear of movement (ie, kinesiophobia) has emerged as a significant predictor of pain-related outcomes including disability and psychologic distress across various types of pain (eg, back pain, headache, fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome). However, no research has examined the prevalence of kinesiophobia in adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of kinesiophobia reported by African American men and women with SCD and to determine whether kinesiophobia is related to pain and psychologic distress in this population.

UNLABELLED: The interferon alpha stands as a reference both in oncology and virology. But its efficiency is limited by frequent somatic as well as neuropsychic side effects. As a matter of fact, the reduction or the ending of a chemotherapy treatment come chiefly from the psychiatric complications caused by the use of interferon. For about 30% of patients, various psychic disorders are noticed: personality disorders, mood disorders, anxiety states, suicidal tendencies, manic and psychotic symptoms. We thus propose a review which shall be completed by a discussion on wether the interferon is re

A hospital case-control study in Isfahan, Islamic Republic of Iran, compared the psychological features of 200 patients with low-back pain with 350 matched controls. The control group scored lower than patients in all dimensions of the Symptom Checklist-90 checklist. Female patients were more psychologically affected by low-back pain than males. In both groups, grudge, general complaints, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviours, somatization and phobia varied with level of education. Patients' levels of depression and anxiety were related to occupational background. Longer duratio

BACKGROUND: There is considerable evidence that genetic factors play an important role in the pathophysiology of affective disorders including bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders. Long-term follow up studies as well as drug treatment studies suggest that these clinical conditions share a number of pathophysiological commonalities including genetic variables. One possible candidate region is located on chromosome 12q24.31, originated from previous linkage and association studies with bipolar disorder and unipolar depression. This region contains two candidate genes

Previous research has shown that anxious adults provide more threat interpretations of ambiguous stimuli than other clinic and nonclinic persons. We were interested in investigating if the same bias occurs in anxious children and how family processes impact on these children's interpretations of ambiguity. Anxious, oppositional, and nonclinical children and their parents were asked separately to interpret and provide plans of action to ambiguous scenarios. Afterwards, each family was asked to discuss two of these situations as a family and for the child to provide a final response. The results

BACKGROUND: Nontraumatic complaints of arm, neck, and shoulder (CANS) represent an important health issue, with a high prevalence in the general working age population and huge economic impact. Nevertheless, only few prospective cohort studies for the outcome of CANS are available.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify disability trajectories and associated prognostic factors during a 2-year follow-up of patients with a new episode of CANS in primary care.
DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study.
METHODS: Data of 682 participants were collected through questionnaires at

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterised by fear of social or performance situations where the individual is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. The literature on dopamine ligands and dopamine genotypes in SAD is however inconsistent. In this study we measured the effects of SSRI pharmacotherapy on dopamine transporter (DAT) binding in patients with SAD, also addressing variability in DAT genotype. Adult subjects meeting DSM-IV criteria for generalised SAD were studied before and after 12 weeks of pharmacotherapy with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor

Eighty patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for social phobia were randomly assigned to 10 weeks of residential cognitive therapy (RCT) or residential interpersonal therapy (RIPT). Subjects were assessed at pretreatment, midtreatment, posttreatment, and 1 year after end of treatment. The patients reported chronic, highly comorbid social phobia. Most had tried other treatments without success. Existing individual treatment protocols for cognitive therapy and interpersonal therapy were extensively modified for an integrated group, individual, and residential format. The RCT and RIPT patients improve

This study examined proactive and reactive aggression and their relation to psychosocial adjustment in three samples (N = 767, 368 girls, M age = 10.03) of Chinese school age children. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed that a two-factor model which distinguished both proactive and reactive aggression fit the data reasonably well, and also fit the data better than a single-factor model in all three samples. The distinction between proactive and reactive aggression was found for both boys and girls. Reactive aggression was more strongly related to reciprocated friendship (negatively), peer v

Social phobia was studied in a North Carolina community, using DSM-III criteria. Two kinds of comparison were made: social phobia v. non-social phobia, and comorbid social phobia v. non-comorbid social phobia. Six-month and lifetime prevalence rates were 2.7 and 3.8% respectively. Social phobia had an early onset, lasted a long time and rarely recovered. Predictors of good outcome recovery in a logistic regression analysis were onset of phobia after age 11, absence of psychiatric comorbidity and greater education. The disorder was often missed in medical consultation. Increased rates of psychi

QUESTION: How much do pain self-efficacy, kinesiophobia, stress and health-related quality of life mediate reductions in pain intensity and disability in people with chronic low back pain receiving a patient-led goal setting and pain science education intervention compared with general exercise advice?
DESIGN: Secondary causal mediation analysis of a two-arm randomised controlled trial.
PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-five people with chronic low back pain.
DATA ANALYSIS: Analyses were conducted in R software following a prospectively registered analysis plan. Four potential mediators were investigat

Objectives: One major obstacle to the diagnosis and treatment of specific phobias in later life is the lack of assessment tools that are relevant to the fears of older adults. This study investigated the utility of five reliable subscales (Blood/Injury, Agoraphobia, Aggression, Animal/Insect, Social Fears) derived from the Fear Survey Schedule-III, a popular measure of phobic fear, in discriminating older from younger participants.Method: The sample was comprised of 81 younger and 61 older adults who completed self-report measures of anxiety and depression and neuropsychological tests. Results:

BACKGROUND: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is among the top unmet concerns reported by breast cancer survivors. Despite the sizable literature on FCR, few theoretical models have been empirically tested. One of the most cited is the FCR model.
AIM: This study seeks to understand the nature of women's cognitive and emotional issues from FCR using specific guidance from the model by Lee-Jones and to provide suggestions for modifications to the model based on empirical results from the reported experiences of women living with breast cancer.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A qualitative descriptive study

INTRODUCTION: Physical therapy (PT) represents a major approach in musculoskeletal (MSK) pain. This study aimed to assess kinesiophobia, its impact and management, in patients with MSK pain treated by PT.
METHODS: A national multicenter, prospective study was conducted in France in patients with MSK pain referred to PT. Kinesiophobia was scored with the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK). Pain, satisfaction, analgesic intake and acceptability were assessed at the initial visit, at the 5th PT session, and at the end of PT.
RESULTS: A total of 700 consecutive outpatients with MSK pain, 54.5% f
