Back off! The effect of emotion on backward step initiation.

The distance regulation (DR) hypothesis states that actors are inclined to increase their distance from an unpleasant stimulus. The current study investigated the relation between emotion and its effect on the control of backward step initiation, which constitutes an avoidance-like behavior. Participants stepped backward on a force plate in response to neutral, high-arousing pleasant and high-arousing unpleasant visual emotional stimuli. Gait initiation parameters and the results of an exploratory analysis of postural sway were compared across the emotion categories using significance testing

Advanced conservative treatment of complete acute rupture of the lateral ankle ligaments: Verifying by stabilometry.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the result of the specific conservative treatment of acute lateral ankle ligaments rupture and verify the effect of this therapy by stabilometry. METHODS: 17 young athletes were examined after acute lateral ankle sprain (grade III). Diagnosis was based on musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations. Pressure plate evaluated postural stability after conservative treatment at regular intervals during 1year. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in postural stability in double-leg stance between limbs. In single-leg stance, COP confidenc

Local(eyes)ing signs in sequential bihemispheric strokes.

INTRODUCTION: Decerebrate posturing typically occurs in the setting of midbrain injury. However, it may also be seen as the result of massive bilateral forebrain lesions. The latter localization is supported when seen concomitantly with roving eye movements and normal brainstem reflexes. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old woman developed aphasia and right hemiparesis and was found to have a left anterior middle cerebral artery stroke from atrial fibrillation. The following day, her examination quickly deteriorated from mild aphasia and right hemiparesis to coma, right gaze preference alternating with

The effects of muscle hypotonia and weakness on balance: a study on Prader-Willi and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome patients.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) are two different genetical disorders both characterized, among other features, by muscular hypotonia. Postural control seems to be impaired in both conditions. The aim of the present study was to quantitatively compare postural control in adult PWS and EDS using stabilometric platform to unveil possible common determinants of impaired balance. We enrolled 11 PWS and 21 EDS adult patients and 20 age-matched controls. They were instructed to maintain an upright standing position for 30s with open eyes (OEs) focusing on a 6 cm black ci

Does betahistine treatment have additional benefits to vestibular rehabilitation?

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of high-dose betahistine treatment added to vestibular rehabilitation (VR) on the disability, balance and postural stability in patients with unilateral vestibular disorder. The VR group (group 1, n = 24) and the VR + betahistine group (group 2, n = 23) were analyzed retrospectively. All patients were evaluated before and after an 8-week customized VR in terms of disability (Dizziness Handicap Inventory, DHI), dynamic balance [Dynamic Gait Index (DGI)] and postural stability (static posturography). In group 1 and group 2, differences between

Isolated tremor and disruption of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system: an 18F-dopa PET study.

We measured striatal 18F-dopa influx constants (Ki) for 20 patients with isolated, predominantly postural, tremor (eight familial, 12 sporadic) and 11 with predominantly rest tremor. Results were compared with 30 controls and 16 Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. The eight familial essential tremor (ET) patients had normal striatal 18F-dopa uptake. Two of the 12 sporadic postural tremor patients had subnormal putamen 18F-dopa Ki, one (who later became akinetic) falling in the PD range. The mean putamen 18F-dopa uptake of the 11 rest tremor patients was reduced to PD levels (51% of normal). Our

Digital skin bloodflow of patient rested on different positions--a laser Doppler study.

Brachial plexus injuries resulting from malposition of the patient during general anesthesia have been described in the medical literature for nearly a century. However, concerning the brachial vessels which were accompanying the nervous plexus, few papers can be found discussing the changes that also occur when malpositing. In this study, an attempt was made to measure changes of digital skin bloodflow among patients resting in different postures simulating the operating postures in orthopaedic surgery. Laser doppler was found to be a sensitive indicator of skin bloodflow and peripheral vascu…

Dynamic Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction Exacerbated by Thoracic Kyphosis.

We present a 74-year-old woman with kyphosis and symptoms of pre/syncope. Heart catheterization revealed dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (DLVOTO) with Brockenbrough Braunwald response only when kyphotic posture was assumed. She had a positive response to metoprolol. DLVOTO is a challenging diagnosis in the absence of resting LVOTO. (Level of Difficulty: Beginner.).

Spinal surgery for a late-onset axial myopathy.

Axial myopathies with paraspinal predominance usually present with dropped head, abnormal posture or rigidity of the spine. Management of axial myopathy can be difficult and there is little data in the literature about surgical treatment. We discuss a case of axial myopathy with late-onset scoliosis and dropped head, focusing on the surgical management of the case.

Effects of a sensorimotor-based, movement quality-focused intervention on functional mobility in breast cancer survivors: a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer survivors frequently experience reductions in physical capacity and sensorimotor impairments following treatment. However, improvements in strength and endurance do not always translate into improvements in functional mobility and balance-related outcomes. This study evaluated whether a sensorimotor-based rehabilitation program emphasizing movement control (Rehabilitation through Movement and Perception, ReMAP) could improve functional mobility and postural stability in breast cancer survivors. METHODS: In this multicenter randomized wait-list controlled trial, 71 breas

Influences of cognitive load on center of pressure trajectory of young male adults with excess weight during gait initiation.

Introduction: Falls and fall-related injuries in young male adults with excess weight are closely related to an increased cognitive load. Previous research mainly focuses on analyzing the postural control status of these populations performing cognitive tasks while stabilized walking progress but overlooked a specific period of walking known as gait initiation (GI). It is yet unknown the influences of cognitive load on this population's postural control status during GI. Objective: This study aimed to determine the influences of cognitive load on the center of pressure (CoP) trajectory of youn

Generalized joint hypermobility, scoliosis, patellofemoral pain, and physical abilities in young dancers.

BACKGROUND: Many young girls with generalized joint hypermobility (GJH) choose to participate in dance because their bodies are suited for this activity. Scoliosis tends to occur often in thin girls, who also are more likely to choose dance. Both anomalies (GJH and scoliosis) may be related to reduced abilities such as diminished strength and insufficient postural balance, with increased risk for musculoskeletal conditions. The main objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of dancers with GJH, the prevalence of dancers with scoliosis, and the prevalence of dancers with

Fast voluntary trunk flexion movements in standing: motor patterns.

The electromyographical (EMG) activity was studied during voluntary flexion movements of the trunk in erect standing man. The movements were performed at maximal velocity with successively increasing amplitude to cover the whole range of motion. The EMG activity was recorded from agonist-antagonist pairs of muscles at the ankle, knee, hip and trunk. The angular displacements at the corresponding joints were recorded using a Selspot optoelectronic system. The duration of initiating activity in prime movers (rectus abdominis and rectus femoris) as well as time to onset of activity in muscles bra
