[First Central American and Caribbean Consensus on Irritable Bowel Syndrome].

Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders seen by physicians, both in primary and secondary care. Significant advances have been made in understanding its complex pathophysiology, resulting in its reclassification as a gut-brain interaction disorder, rather than a functional gastrointestinal disorder. The condition affects between 5% and 10% of the population and, in most cases, it is characterized by having a relapsing-remitting course. This diagnosis can be made based on the clinical history with limited and judicious use of investigations, unless symptoms

Adapted Physical Activity Protocol for Lower Limb Functional and Strength Recovery in a Young Athlete with Cutaneous Melanoma: Feasibility and Efficacy during COVID-19 Pandemic.

Adapted physical activity (APA) can improve psychophysical wellbeing and quality of life (QoL) in cancer survivors, a vulnerable population requiring a global management, especially during the recent pandemic. On this basis, we investigated for the first time the impact of a tailored APA intervention on a melanoma-affected 18-year-old female athlete to counteract treatment sequelae and promote lower limb functional and strength recovery. Patient was evaluated at baseline and post-protocol by a test battery focusing on mobility, muscle strength measured by dynamometry, and lower limb girths ass

Social connectedness of carers: An Australian national survey of carers.

Carers of people living with a disability, mental health problems, alcohol or drug dependency, chronic condition, terminal illness or who are frail due to age may experience negative caregiving impacts. Although carers' social isolation has been reported in many qualitative studies, it has largely been neglected in quantitative studies. Using data collected in the Carers NSW 2020 National Carer Survey, this large-scale quantitative study aimed to identify the extent of Australian carers' social connectedness and what factors may be related to their social well-being. The validated Friendship S

Trauma-Informed Design of Supported Housing: A Scoping Review through the Lens of Neuroscience.

There is growing recognition of the importance of the design of the built environment in supporting mental health. In this context, trauma-informed design has emerged as a new field of practice targeting the design of the built environment to support wellbeing and ameliorate the physical, psychological and emotional impacts of trauma and related pathologies such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). With high levels of prevalence of PTSD among people escaping homelessness and domestic violence, a priority area is the identification and application of evidence-based design solutions for tra

Propranolol for the management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Propranolol is a β-adrenergic antagonist used in the management of hypertension, cardiac arrhythmia, and angina pectoris. There is some evidence that propranolol may benefit individuals with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). A total of three case series, one randomized controlled trial and one case report were identified (from a literature search of three major databases: PubMed, Ovid, and Cochrane collaboration) that assessed the use of propranolol for the management of BPSD. From these studies, it appears that propranolol improves BPSD, including agitation and aggres

Versatile Oral Insulin Delivery Nanosystems: From Materials to Nanostructures.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by lack of insulin in the body leading to failure of blood glucose regulation. Diabetes patients usually need frequent insulin injections to maintain normal blood glucose levels, which is a painful administration manner. Long-term drug injection brings great physical and psychological burden to diabetic patients. In order to improve the adaptability of patients to use insulin and reduce the pain caused by injection, the development of oral insulin formulations is currently a hot and difficult topic in the field of medicine and pharmacy. Counteracting side effects of combined oral contraceptives through the administration of specific micronutrients.

OBJECTIVE: The occurrence of side effects related to the use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) - or even the fear of them - often affects patients' compliance and their quality of life. Such adverse effects include both physical and psychological alterations. Therapies based on COCs are related to lower levels of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins B, C and E, zinc, magnesium, and selenium. This review gathers scientific evidence about the effectiveness of the administration of specific micronutrients to address nutritional needs and recover adverse conditions. MATERIALS AND METHOD

Hospital Nursing Staff Perceptions of Resources Provided by Their Organizations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has profoundly impacted the health and psychological well-being of hospital nursing staff. While additional support is needed to better cope with increased job stressors, little is known about what types of hospital resources have been provided and how nursing staff perceive them. This study addressed this gap by describing nursing staff perceptions of resources provided by hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. METHODS: Registered nurses and nursing assistants who were working in hospitals during the pandemic

The effects of forensic mental health reports on decisions about guilt in the Netherlands: An experimental approach.

In the Netherlands, in approximately 30% of the more serious criminal cases, a pretrial forensic mental health report (FMHR) is requested to inform the court whether a mental disorder was present at the time of alleged crime, whether this disorder affected behavior and decision-making at the time of the offense and how this disorder may affect future (criminal) behavior. While informative for sentencing decisions, information about mental disorders or risk is irrelevant for the question whether the defendant committed the alleged crime. Yet based on cognitive psychological theory of evidence e

Coping, Anxiety, and Pain Intensity in Patients Requiring Thoracic Surgery.

Stress, anxiety, and post-surgical chest pain are common problems among patients with thoracic surgical pathology. The way in which psychological distress is managed-the coping style-can influence the postsurgical evolution and quality of life of patients. In our study, we monitored the influence of coping style on patients' anxiety and the intensity of post-operative chest pain. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 90 subjects with thoracic surgical pathology. One month after their surgeries, patients completed the following scales and questionnaires, translated, adapted, and validated for

Truncal acne, what do we know?

Truncal acne is frequently overlooked in dermatological practice, even though it may result in scars and impact on self-esteem and body image. Therefore, it is important to identify the disease early in order to initiate treatment in time and, thus, to prevent it from worsening and resulting in physical and psychological sequelae. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of what is currently known about truncal acne, its prevalence, aetiology and physiopathology, how its severity is currently evaluated, how to differentiate it from other skin afflictions and current treatment options.
