Post-Mortem Findings in Buffy Tufted-Ear Marmosets (Callithrix aurita) Diagnosed With Platynosomum sp.

BACKGROUND: The buffy tufted-ear marmoset (Callithrix aurita) is an endangered Brazilian primate and understanding the diseases that affect these animals is essential for improving their health and survival in conservational facilities. METHODS: This study compiled the macroscopic and microscopic findings from three C. aurita previously diagnosed with Platynosomum sp. infection at UNIVAP Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (CRAS). Gross examinations were performed at the institution, and histopathological analyses were conducted at the Adolfo Lutz Institute. RESULTS: All the animals exhibited sig

Neuron-derived SPP1 instructs microglia to limit degeneration.

Neurons actively shape immune responses that maintain central nervous system integrity. We identify SPP1 (secreted phosphoprotein 1) as a neuron-derived signal that reprograms microglia into a neuroprotective, homeostatic state after injury and during neurodegeneration. In mouse models of glaucoma and optic nerve damage, neuronal SPP1 enhances microglial autophagy, debris clearance, and anti-inflammatory activity, preserving neuronal survival and visual function. SPP1 is elevated in neurons of human and primate glaucomatous retinas, where SPP1+ cells show increased resilience. In Alzheimer's d

Type I IFN-mediated NET release promotes Mycobacterium tuberculosis replication and is associated with granuloma caseation.

Neutrophils are the most abundant cell type in the airways of tuberculosis patients. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection induces the release of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs); however, the molecular regulation and impact of NET release on Mtb pathogenesis are unknown. We find that during Mtb infection in neutrophils, PAD4 citrullinates histones to decondense chromatin that gets released as NETs in a manner that can maintain neutrophil viability and promote Mtb replication. Type I interferon promotes the formation of chromatin-containing vesicles that allow NET release without com

On the evolution of polysensory superior temporal sulcus and middle temporal gyrus: A key component of the semantic system in the human brain.

The primary auditory cortex and other early auditory cortical areas lie on Heschl's gyrus within the Sylvian fissure. On the adjacent lateral surface of the superior temporal gyrus, the cortex processes higher order auditory information leading to auditory perception. On the ventral surface of the temporal lobe in the primate brain, there are areas that process higher order visual information leading to visual perception. These sensory-specific auditory and visual processing regions are separated by areas that integrate multisensory information within the deep superior temporal sulcus in both

ULTRASOUND-GUIDED PERCUTANEOUS TREATMENT OF HEPATIC HYDATIDOSIS IN TWO RED-SHANKED DOUC LANGURS (PYGATHRIX NEMAEUS).

Hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus ortleppi is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for critically endangered captive langurs in northern Vietnam. The most common sites for hydatid cyst development are the liver and the lungs. Chemotherapy trials with albendazole alone or in combination with praziquantel in these langurs had varying results and in most cases were ineffective. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous aspiration of cystic fluid followed by instillation and re-aspiration of a scolicidal agent (PAIR technique), has gained importance in the treatment of active hepatic cysts in humans

Limited Benefit of Postexposure Prophylaxis With VSV-EBOV in Ebola Virus-Infected Rhesus Macaques.

Vesicular stomatitis virus-Ebola virus (VSV-EBOV) vaccine has been successfully used in ring vaccination approaches during EBOV disease outbreaks demonstrating its general benefit in short-term prophylactic vaccination, but actual proof of its benefit in true postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) for humans is missing. Animal studies have indicated PEP efficacy when VSV-EBOV was used within hours of lethal EBOV challenge. Here, we used a lower EBOV challenge dose and a combined intravenous and intramuscular VSV-EBOV administration to improve PEP efficacy in the rhesus macaque model. VSV-EBOV treatmen

Role of Key Infectivity Parameters in the Transmission of Ebola Virus Makona in Macaques.

Many characteristics associated with Ebola virus disease remain to be fully understood. It is known that direct contact with infected bodily fluids is an associated risk factor, but few studies have investigated parameters associated with transmission between individuals, such as the dose of virus required to facilitate spread and route of infection. Therefore, we sought to characterize the impact by route of infection, viremia, and viral shedding through various mucosae, with regards to intraspecies transmission of Ebola virus in a nonhuman primate model. Here, challenge via the esophagus or

Domestication Phenotype Linked to Vocal Behavior in Marmoset Monkeys.

The domestication syndrome refers to a set of traits that are the by-products of artificial selection for increased tolerance toward humans [1-3]. One hypothesis is that some species, like humans and bonobos, "self-domesticated" and have been under selection for that same suite of domesticated phenotypes [4-8]. However, the evidence for this has been largely circumstantial. Here, we provide evidence that, in marmoset monkeys, the size of a domestication phenotype-a white facial fur patch-is linked to their degree of affiliative vocal responding. During development, the amount of parental vocal

Temperature profile of the nasal cavity in Japanese macaques.

The nasal cavity conditions respiratory air. The distribution of temperature within the nasal cavity has been examined in humans using various direct measurements. Macaques are a nonhuman primate species that are used as a model for understanding human physiology. They are widely distributed geographically in varied climate environments and they are expected to exhibit evolutionary anatomical and physiological adaptations in the air-conditioning. To provide basic data for developing an animal model in air-conditioning, we measured the distribution of temperature within the nasal cavity in Japa

Effects of Reducing Norepinephrine Levels via DSP4 Treatment on Amyloid-β Pathology in Female Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta).

The degeneration in the locus coeruleus associated with Alzheimer's disease suggests an involvement of the noradrenergic system in the disease pathogenesis. The role of depleted norepinephrine was tested in adult and aged rhesus macaques to develop a potential model for testing Alzheimer's disease interventions. Monkeys were injected with the noradrenergic neurotoxin N-(2-chloroethyl)-N-ethyl-2-bromobenzylamine (DSP4) or vehicle at 0, 3, and 6 months; brains were harvested at 9 months. Reduced norepinephrine in the locus coeruleus was accompanied by decreased dopamine β-hydroxylase staining an

A Brief History of APOL1: A Gene Evolving.

APOL1 kidney risk variants lead to high rates of kidney disease in people of recent African ancestry. These risk variants are very common and confer a large increase in risk of kidney disease. This unusual combination of high frequency and large effect size occurs because the risk variants also appear to have beneficial properties. The risk variants show enhanced protective effects against certain pathogens, particularly the trypanosomes that cause African sleeping sickness. Here, we consider the origins and evolution of the primate-only APOL1 gene. Human genetics, mouse models, biochemistry,

Vaccination strategies against Zika virus.

The epidemic emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) in 2015-2016 has been associated with congenital malformations and neurological sequela. Current efforts to develop a ZIKV vaccine build on technologies that successfully reduced infection or disease burden against closely related flaviviruses or other RNA viruses. Subunit-based (DNA plasmid and modified mRNA), viral vectored (adeno- and measles viruses) and inactivated viral vaccines are already advancing to clinical trials in humans after successful mouse and non-human primate studies. Among the greatest challenges for the rapid implementation of i

High prevalence of hepatitis E virus infection in goats.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of acute hepatitis worldwide, primarily transmitted by fecal-oral route. Zoonotic transmission of HEV from HEV-infected pigs (pork) or cows (milk) to human or non-human primate has been confirmed, but the risk of HEV in goat is still rarely assessed. In the present study, stool, blood, tissues, and milk of goat were collected for HEV infection investigation from Dali City of Yunnan Province in China, where raw mutton and goat milk are traditionally consumed. Surprisingly, a high prevalence of HEV infection in goat was found. Phylogenetic analysis reveal

Real-time telemetric monitoring in whole-body 60Co gamma-photon irradiated rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

BACKGROUND: Animals undergoing experimental manipulations, such as exposure to radiation, may exhibit physiologic and behavioral signs of pain and distress. Telemetry permits close monitoring of these parameters for early and effective management during procedures. METHODS: Radiotelemetric units were surgically implanted into 24 Macaca mulatta before 6.5-Gy cobalt-60 γ-photon irradiation. Each unit transmitted electrocardiogram, intrathoracic pressure, and body temperature leads. Primate irradiation-restraint boxes and housing cages were modified to collect telemetric signals before, during,

Phenotypic transition of the collecting duct epithelium in congenital urinary tract obstruction.

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has emerged in recent years as an important process in the development of organ fibrosis in many human diseases. Our previous experience in a nonhuman primate model of obstructive nephropathy suggested that EMT of collecting duct epithelium contributes to the development of interstitial fibrosis. In this study we demonstrate for the first time in humans that obstructed fetal collecting duct epithelium undergoes transition to mesenchymal phenotype, characterized by decreased expression of epithelial markers, de novo expression of mesenchymal markers with

Stress modulation of visuomotor binding.

The primate cortex represents perceived and produced events in a distributed way, which calls for a mechanism that integrates their features into coherent structures. Animal, drug, and patient studies suggest that the local binding of visual features is under muscarinic-cholinergic control, whereas visuomotor binding seems to be driven by dopaminergic pathways. Consistent with this picture, we present evidence that the binding of visual features and actions is modulated by stress, induced by the cold pressure test (CPT), which causes an excessive dopamine turnover in prefrontal cortex. The imp

Novel therapies for the treatment of cystic fibrosis: new developments in gene and stem cell therapy.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) was one of the first target diseases for lung gene therapy. Studies of lung gene transfer for CF have provided many insights into the necessary components of successful gene therapy for lung diseases. Many advancements have been achieved with promising results in vitro and in small animal models. However, studies in primate models and patients have been discouraging despite a large number of clinical trials. This reflects a number of obstacles to successful, sustained, and repeatable gene transfer in the lung. Cell-based therapy with embryonic stem cells and adult stem cel

Toward a framework for defective emotion processing in social phobia.

INTRODUCTION: This paper explores and outlines an evolutionary approach to understanding social phobia (SP) as a developmental disorder in brain mechanisms that regulate socioemotional behaviour. METHODS: A literature review of cognitive, neuronal, and endocrine correlates of SP is presented using an integrative approach. RESULTS: Social phobia patients present with a specific and developmentally stable functional neuroanatomical and neuroendocrine profile that can be linked to findings of cognitive attentional abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS: It is argued that SP is the human counterpart to pri
