Hookworms are parasites, closely related to the model nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, that are a major economic and health burden worldwide. Primarily three hookworm species (Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale, and Ancylostoma ceylanicum) infect humans. Another 100 hookworm species from 19 genera infect primates, ruminants, and carnivores. Genetic data exist for only seven of these species. Genome sequences are available from only four of these species in two genera, leaving 96 others (particularly those parasitizing wildlife) without any genomic data. The most recent hookworm genomes …

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) causes serious the neurological disease, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). TBEV can be transmitted to humans by ticks as well as by the alimentary route, which is mediated through the consumption of raw milk products from infected ruminants such as sheep, goats, and cows. The alimentary route of TBEV was recognized in the early 1950s and many important experimental studies were performed shortly thereafter. Nowadays, alimentary TBEV infections are recognized as a relevant factor contributing to the overall increase in TBE incidences in Europe. This review aims…

A prevalence study of skin myiasis in small ruminants was carried over a one year period. Animals, which were admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Qassim region, Saudi Arabia, were examined for wound myiasis and the larvae collected were identified as Chrysomyia bezziana. Prevalence of 13.0% and 10.0% were recorded in sheep and goats respectively. Sites of infestation, gender and age were concerned during the investigation. Fixed flocks (animals reared completely indoors) showed higher prevalence than semi-fixed ones particularly in winter. No cases of myiasis was observed during su…

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a mosquito-borne bunyavirus endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula and the etiological agent of Rift Valley fever. Rift Valley fever is a disease of major public health and economic concern, affecting livestock and humans. In ruminants, RVFV infection is characterized by high mortality rates in newborns and near 100% abortion rates in pregnant animals. Infection in humans is typically manifested as a self-limiting febrile illness, but can lead to severe and fatal hepatitis, encephalitis, hemorrhagic fever or retinitis with partial or complete …

A Corriedale ewe was confirmed as the first atypical scrapie case during an active surveillance program for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in small ruminants in Japan. The animal was homozygous for the AF141RQ haplotype of PRNP. The animal showed clinical neurological signs possibly due to listeriosis before culling. Western blot analysis showed an unusual multiple banded pattern with a low-molecular fragment at ~7 kDa. Histopathology revealed suppurative meningoencephalitis caused by listeriosis in the brainstem. Fine granular to globular immunostaining of disease-associated prion …

Orf virus is a zoonotic parapoxvirus endemic to most countries in the world and is principally associated with small ruminants (e.g., sheep and goats). Human orf infections appear as ulcerative skin lesions after contact with an infected animal or contaminated fomite. This report summarizes the epidemiologic and laboratory investigations of four sporadic cases of human orf infection, emphasizing the temporal association between human lesions and skin trauma or recent flock vaccination with live orf vaccine. This zoonotic infection shares clinical manifestations and exposure risks with other, p…

In order to examine the effect of exogenous melatonin on selected biochemical variables of the blood in ruminants, dairy cows were given the pineal gland hormone in the dose of 0.1 mg/kg body weight. One and four hours after melatonin administration blood samples were collected from the cows in the control and the treated group in order to determine the levels of glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, free fatty acids, as well as the activities of alanine and aspartate aminotransferase. The pineal gland hormone caused a significant increase in the levels of total cholesterol and t…

Mycoplasma agalactiae, the causative agent of contagious agalactia in small ruminants, produces a protein, named P80, that is detectable in all wild-type isolates examined to date and that appears expressed during the early phase of infection. We describe here the identification, cloning and expression of the gene encoding P80 (ma-mp81). The deduced amino acid sequence is consistent with a hydrophobic and basic protein that possesses a lipoprotein signal peptide. Sequence analysis of gene ma-mp81 suggests that P80 is a membrane lipoprotein that shows significant homology with other putative li…

Rinderpest is an ancient plague of cattle and other large ruminants, with descriptions of its effects dating back to Roman times. It is caused by a morbillivirus closely related to human measles virus. Although a very effective vaccine is available, it is heat labile, and logistical and financial problems hamper its delivery to the remote areas of Africa and Asia where enzootic foci remain. Periodic epizootics emerge from these foci and spread into neighboring areas, mainly as a result of uncontrolled livestock movement and trading. This is particularly true during wars or civil disturbances w…

Escherichia coli O157:H7 has emerged in the past 20 years as a pathogen of public health importance. Although most E. coli are normal flora in the colons of humans and other warm-blooded animals, several strains are capable of causing disease in humans. In recent years, E. coli O157:H7 and other shiga-like toxin-producing strains have been transmitted via foods and caused disease ranging from bloody diarrhea, and in more severe cases, hemolytic uremic syndrome and thrombocytopenic purpura. The reservoir appears to be cattle and, perhaps, other ruminants. Control is difficult in nonheated foods…

Monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) to bovine immunoglobulin heavy chain of the four major isotypes gamma 1, gamma 2, alpha, mu and the light chains (combined kappa and lambda) were produced and found to cross-react in enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) with immunoglobulins of some other animal species despite the discrete specificity associated with an antibody derived from a single clone. This cross-reactivity, particularly amongst ruminants, could be utilized in serological testing for the diagnosis of disease in these species. For example, Mabs produced against bovine immunoglobulin light chain cr…

The coat of acid mucosubstances occurring on the bladder surface was studied in Cysticercus bovis (larvae of Taenia saginata) developing in specific (cattle) and nonspecific (some other ruminants) intermediate hosts. In cysticerci developing in nonspecific intermediate hosts, this coat is absent or poorly developed even at the time when it is completely formed on the bladder surface of C. bovis from cattle. If the cysticercus develops up to the infective stage in a nonspecific intermediate host, it is usually localized outside the muscles: in the brain, lungs or liver. Its bladder is then also…

Within the strategy-based approach, research has extensively explored cognitive emotion regulation strategies and their association with psychopathology. The present study aims to focus on behavioral strategies by adapting the Behavioral Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (BERQ). Additionally, to explore the interplay between multiple types of strategies and their interaction with psychopathology, we assessed the links between both adaptive and maladaptive cognitive and behavioral strategies with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, utilizing a network perspective. Using a sample of 518

Depressive disorders have been consistently associated with elevated levels of mind-wandering and self-focused negative rumination. Separate tracks of research have implicated brain structures within the default mode network (DMN) in both mind-wandering and depression. In this study, we hypothesized that diminished mind-wandering and fewer depressive symptoms would co-occur in individuals with damage to the DMN. To test this hypothesis, we used a k-means clustering algorithm to identify a target group of patients with reduced mind-wandering and fewer depressive symptoms relative to brain-damag

Improving ruminant production efficiency is contingent on accurately measuring gas fluxes from individual animals in grazing and confined feeding environments The GreenFeed system (GFS) has been increasingly utilized by researchers to measure gas flux of ruminants in their production environment. However, there are wide inconsistencies in methodologies from laboratory-to-laboratory. The objective of this manuscript is to provide standardized recommendations for measuring individual animal gas fluxes of methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and hydrogen by the GFS, which are based on experiential an…

This study aimed to elucidate the association of methane (CH4) production with eating behavior, rumen fermentation, and the rumen microbial population among dairy cows with varying CH4 to carbon dioxide (CO2) ratios in their breath, as measured by the sniffer method. Eighteen lactating Holstein cows were divided into three groups: low (LEm), mid (MEm), and high (HEm) CH4:CO2 ratios. Estimated CH4 production was lower in the LEm group than in the HEm group. Daily dry matter intake and milk production did not differ among the groups, whereas body weight was lower in the LEm group than in the MEm
