Correlation between the dizziness handicap inventory and balance performance during the acute phase of unilateral vestibulopathy.

PURPOSE: The dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) is widely used to evaluate self-perceived handicap due to dizziness, and is known to correlate with vestibular function tests in chronic dizziness. However, whether DHI reflects subjective symptoms during the acute phase has not been studied. This study aims to investigate the correlations of subjective and objective measurements to highlight parameters that reflect the severity of dizziness during the first week of acute unilateral vestibulopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with acute unilateral vestibulopathy were examined. P

Self- but not other-mentalizing moderates the association between BPD symptoms and somatic complaints in community-dwelling adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential moderator role of poor mentalization in the association between borderline personality disorder (BPD) traits and somatization, specifically focusing on the polarities of self- and other-mentalizing. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional, general population study evaluating adolescents (n = 162, 61.3% female; ages 12-18, M = 14.63, SD = 1.02). The relationship between BPD traits and somatization was evaluated with self-mentalization (attention to emotions and clarity of emotions) and other-mentalizing as moderator variables. METHODS:

"So, if she wasn't aware of it, then how would everybody else out there be aware of it?"-Key Stakeholder Perspectives on the Initial Implementation of Self-Collection in Australia's Cervical Screening Program: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: In December 2017, the Australian National Cervical Screening Program transitioned from 2-yearly cytology-based to 5-yearly human papillomavirus (HPV)-based cervical screening, including a vaginal self-collection option. Until July 2022, this option was restricted to under- or never-screened people aged 30 years and older who refused a speculum exam. We investigated the perspectives and experiences of stakeholders involved in, or affected by, the initial implementation of the restricted self-collection pathway. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 49 stakeholders

The Immediate Effects of Self-Myofacial Release on Flexibility, Jump Performance and Dynamic Balance Ability.

Self-myofascial release (SMR) is a popular method to potentially increase the compliance and extensibility of the fascia and reduce muscle stiffness. The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of posterior muscle chain SMR on flexibility, vertical jump performance and balance ability. Eighteen young participants volunteered to take part in this crossover design study. They performed two self-massage sessions in randomized order separated by at least one week. One session consisted of posterior muscle chain SMR whereas the other one was performed on the upper limbs as a control

Evaluation of online educational curriculum on HPV vaccination practices among adult primary care providers.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. While HPV is a vaccine-preventable illness, vaccine utilization rates in the United States remain low, particularly among adults. METHODS: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of an online, asynchronous educational module on HPV vaccination for adult primary care providers. We designed and implemented the module for family medicine, internal medicine, medicine/pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology providers in a community practice network affiliated with a large acade

Foot function in rheumatoid arthritis: Correlation between the Rheumatoid and Arthritis Outcome Score and performance-based physical tests.

BACKGROUND: Foot function is usually assessed using self-reported outcome measures which remain subjective in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Physical performance tests were recommended for functional assessment in lower limb osteoarthritis. However, foot function assessment's guidelines in RA are lacking. We aimed to investigate the correlation between a self-reported outcome measure and two performance-based physical tests for assessing foot function in RA patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed over 7 months' period including RA patients. We used Rheumatoid and Ar

Women's initial experience of abnormal papanicolaou smear.

To discover the early subjective experience of women affected by abnormal Papanicolaou smear, a qualitative study was undertaken with 8 North Carolina women, 4 to 12 months postnotification of their first abnormal result. Data were analyzed via grounded theory methodology to identify a core theory that could guide interventions to improve follow-up for cancer prevention. This theoretical process is described as a labyrinth journey-an imperative healing process undertaken by all participants, who undertook the following tasks: evaluating peril, seeking refuge, obtaining information, and reframi

Digital health innovation can fail to move beyond prototype or pilot stages or achieve intended outcomes due to a lack of involvement and at … tal innovation methods. Young people traced the digital testing and sampling process from accessing self-testing and sampling kits to laboratory processing of results through to how results should be communicated. They were encouraged to evaluate how these processes would work in the context of their everyday lives. We systematically embedded this ideation wor …

European Society of Gynaecological Oncology/European Network of Gynaecological Advocacy Groups Position on risk-based cervical cancer screening.

The Risk-Based Screening for Cervical Cancer project was a 4-year Horizon 2020 European research consortium that developed and validated a risk-stratified approach to cervical cancer screening, moving away from the current one-size-fits-all model. The European Society of Gynecological Oncology and its network, the European Network of Gynecological Advocacy Groups, participated as partners, contributing their expertise from both professional medical society and patient advocacy perspectives. The project's key findings support replacing cytology with human papillomavirus (HPV) deoxyribonucleic a

Evaluation of SARS-CoV-2 lateral flow device sensitivity: a comparison of systematic laboratory assessments with manufacturer-reported sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Self-testing for SARS-CoV-2 infection using lateral flow devices (LFDs) was a key component of the COVID-19 pandemic response; however, LFD performance has shown a high degree of variability. Between August 2020 and July 2023, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), including predecessor organisations, undertook a three-phase SARS-CoV-2 test development and evaluation programme to independently evaluate commercially available SARS-CoV-2 LFDs, incorporating standardised laboratory assessment of test sensitivity. Here we describe results from a comparison of UKHSA laboratory assessmen…

Long-Term Cumulative Effects of Repeated Concussions in Cyclists: A Neurophysiological and Sensorimotor Study.

Objectives: Sports-related concussion (SRC) is mostly associated with contact and combat sports. However, emerging evidence suggest that cyclists are also at risk of repeated concussion injury. Moreover, long-term neurophysiological outcomes in cycling cohorts remain underexplored. This novel study investigated the long-term effect of repetitive concussions in cyclists. Road, mountain biking (MTB), and BMX riders with a history of concussions and self-reported persistent symptoms were assess for neurophysiology and cognitive-motor performance compared to previously concussed cyclists with no o

Self-collected penile-meatal swabs are suitable for the detection of STIs in Ugandan men with high rates of STI coinfections.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a global health challenge. Testing is not routinely performed in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which bear a disproportionate burden of STIs. Self-collected penile-meatal swabs (SCPMS) are an alternative to urine for STI testing, but data from LMICs are limited. METHODS: Between October 2019 and September 2020, recruited participants with urethral discharge syndrome at government health facilities in Kampala, Uganda, provided urine and SCPMS. Samples were retrospectively analysed for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorr

Community pharmacy chlamydia and gonorrhea test-to-treat program: Development of an implementation toolkit.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) surveillance showed more than 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis nationally in the United States in 2022. Individuals often seek out nonemergency medical care at pharmacies. This makes community pharmacies well-positioned to address rising STI rates by offering services to screen and treat common STIs. A local health department, an independent pharmacy, and a school of pharmacy in Pennsylvania partnered to implement a test-to-treat service for chlamydia and gonorrhea within a pharmacy. This pilot program utilized the followi

Monitoring for fentanyl within Australian supervised injecting facilities: Findings from feasibility testing of novel methods and collaborative workshops.

BACKGROUND: Australia is yet to see widespread fentanyl-contaminated heroin, despite the established presence of fentanyl in other countries. International mortality trends alongside a local cluster of fentanyl-related deaths prompted interest in developing methods to monitor for fentanyl and other potentially harmful novel psychoactive substances (NPS) in Australia. METHODS: We tested novel methods to monitor for fentanyl and other NPS. From 2017-2021, clients from supervised injecting facilities (SIFs) in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, contributed urine screens (UDS) with BTNX Rapid Respo

Predictors of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Uptake in a Sexual Health Clinic With Rapid PrEP Initiation.

BACKGROUND: Improved pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake is essential for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention initiatives. Offering PrEP at the time of HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing can improve uptake. We offered rapid PrEP initiation in a sexual health clinic and assessed predictors of PrEP interest, initiation, linkage, and retention. METHODS: Between November 2018 and February 2020, PrEP-eligible individuals who presented to a sexual health clinic were offered a free 30-day supply of PrEP plus linkage to continued PrEP care. Knowledge about and prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis in a population-based sample of emerging Croatian adults.

To determine the prevalence of genital Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) infection, knowledge about chlamydia and experience of previous testing for chlamydia, we carried out a national probability-based survey in emerging adults aged 18-25 years in Croatia in 2021-2022. Participants (n = 1197), members of a national online panel, completed a web-based questionnaire that collected information on socio-demographics, sexual behaviours and knowledge about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Urine specimens from a sample of sexually experienced participants were self-collected and tested for c
