The copA gene product, a putative copper-translocating P-type ATPase, has been shown to be involved in copper resistance in Escherichia coli. The copA gene was disrupted by insertion of a kanamycin gene through homologous recombination. The mutant strain was more sensitive to copper salts but not to salts of other metals, suggesting a role in copper homeostasis. The patterns of migration and attrition of Schistosoma japonicum larvae were studied in a mouse model. Control and immunized mice were challenged with 100 S. japonicum cercariae tagged with 75Se-labeled methionine. Skin, lungs, liver, and other organs were analyzed by compressed organ autoradiography for the presence of larvae that appeared as reduced silver foci. The pattern of migration of S. japonicum was similar in mice with primary infection and in mice immunized with irradiated cercariae. Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) was induced in adult Lewis rats with purified guinea pig CNS myelin and Freund's adjuvant. Fifty bronchial washing specimens from 36 patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) were retrospectively reviewed to assess the sensitivity of the various special stains used to diagnose Pneumocystis carinii. Mooren's ulcer is a rare disease of presumed autoimmune aetiology. Some cases run a chronic severe course and fail to respond to local and systemic therapy. We report here such a case with bilateral Mooren's ulcer that failed to respond to local therapy with topical corticosteroids, silver nitrate, and conjunctival resection, as well as systemic immunosuppression with corticosteroids, cyclophosphamide, and azathioprine.
