Prevalence of oral manifestations in coeliac disease and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Various oral manifestations are associated with coeliac disease in children, whereas data on adults are scarce. Moreover, possible individual factors predisposing to these manifestations remain unresolved. The aim of this study was to investigate these issues in a large cohort of adult coeliac disease patients both at diagnosis and while on gluten-free diet (GFD). METHODS: This population-based study involved 873 adult patients with coeliac disease and 563 non-coeliac controls. Patients and controls were interviewed and structured questionnaires were used to assess the severity of

Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma May Prevent Oral Mucositis-Related Candidemia in Chemotherapy-Treated Rats.

Oral mucositis associated with candidiasis can causes systemic candidemia, posing a risk to cancer patients administered antineoplastic therapy. Cold atmospheric pressure plasma jets (CAPPJs) have antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. This study evaluated the effects CAPPJs in preventing systemic fungal dissemination in a murine model of oral mucositis associated with candidiasis. Forty Wistar rats were divided into groups: CAPPJs (treated) and non-treated controls (for comparison), with subgroups subject to 24 and 72 h of treatment (n = 10 each). Four cycles of chemotherapy (cisplatin

Plants with Anti-Ulcer Activity and Mechanism: A Review of Preclinical and Clinical Studies.

Ulcer disorders including the oral mucosa, large intestine, and stomach mucosa, cause significant global health burdens. Conventional treatments such as non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), histamine H2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs), and cytoprotective agents have drawbacks like mucosal injury, diminish gastric acid secretion, and interact with concurrent medications. Therefore, alternative therapeutic approaches are needed to tackle this health concern. Plants are rich in active metabolites in the bark, roots, leaves, fruits, and seeds, and have been uti

Quercetin Prevents Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis by Upregulating BMI-1.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Radiation-induced oral mucositis is a major adverse event of radiotherapy. Severe oral mucositis may cause unwanted interruption in radiotherapy and reduce long-term survival in cancer patients receiving radiotherapy, but until now, there have been no effective options for preventing radiation-induced oral mucositis. Quercetin is a flavonoid that is widely found in food species and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer activities. In this study, we investigated a new role of quercetin in preventing radiation-induced oral mucositis. Quercetin exerted preventive effects against radi

Locally advanced tongue squamous cell carcinoma in epidermolysis simplex bullosa patient: a therapeutic conundrum.

Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is a debilitating condition affecting the skin and mucous membranes that is characterised by frequent ulceration and blistering on trivial trauma. In EBS, oral cavity mucosal injuries lead to a high propensity for developing squamous cell carcinomas. Locally advanced tongue carcinoma arising in this background presents a challenging therapeutic conundrum. To our knowledge, this is the first case of aggressive locally advanced tongue carcinoma that has developed sporadically in a patient with EBS and no family history. Routine screening of oral mucosal lesion

Oral manifestations in stem cell transplantation for acute myeloid leukemia.

Acute myeloid leukemia is a highly aggressive malignancy with a high morbidity rate, for which an accurate and rapid diagnostic is essential. Acute myeloid leukemia manifestations frequently include oral abnormalities. Still, there is a limited number of studies reporting the incidence of oral manifestations in acute leukemia, the prevalence of periodontal status and periodontal parameters in these patients. Our aim was to emphasize the importance of early recognition by the dental practitioners of oral cavity manifestations as signs of acute myeloid leukemia, so that prompt referral to the he

Oral Manifestations of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Two Case Reports.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are known as chronic inflammatory disorders of the digestive tract, represented mainly by Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). Among the main oral manifestations of IBD are cobblestoning of the oral mucosa, labial swellings with vertical fissures, pyostomatitis vegetans, angular cheilitis, perioral erythema, and glossitis. In this sense, understanding these nosological entities by dentists would help reach early and differential diagnosis. Thus, two case reports are presented and discussed based on theoretical references obtained by a literature r…

Novel submicronized rebamipide liquid with moderate viscosity: significant effects on oral mucositis in animal models.

This study aimed at developing a novel rebamipide liquid for an effective treatment of oral mucositis. The healing effects of a variety of liquids comprising submicronized rebamipide crystals were investigated using a rat cauterization-induced oral ulcer model. Whereas 2% rebamipide liquid comprising micro-crystals did not exhibit significant curative effect, 2% rebamipide liquids comprising submicronized crystals with moderate viscosities exhibited healing effects following intra-oral administration. The 2% and 4% optimized rebamipide liquids showed significant healing effects in the rat oral

Interventions for replacing missing teeth: treatment of peri-implantitis.

BACKGROUND: One of the key factors for the long-term success of oral implants is the maintenance of healthy tissues around them. Bacterial plaque accumulation induces inflammatory changes in the soft tissues surrounding oral implants and it may lead to their progressive destruction (peri-implantitis) and ultimately to implant failure. Different treatment strategies for peri-implantitis have been suggested, however it is unclear which are the most effective. OBJECTIVES: To identify the most effective interventions for treating peri-implantitis around osseointegrated dental implants. SEARCH ME

Numerous IgG4-positive plasma cells are ubiquitous in diverse localised non-specific chronic inflammatory conditions and need to be distinguished from IgG4-related systemic disorders.

BACKGROUND: IgG4-related systemic fibrosclerosis is a recently defined disorder characterised by a diffuse or tumefactive inflammatory reaction rich in IgG4-positive plasma cells associated with sclerosis and obliterative phlebitis. Although characteristic histopathological features are essential for the diagnosis of these disorders, to date there exists no consensus regarding the cut-off values used to define a 'significant IgG4-positive plasma cell count,' and data regarding the distribution of IgG4-positive plasma cells under common (non-specific) inflammatory conditions are lacking. Use of sublingual methadone for treating pain of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis.

Chemotherapy-induced and radiation-induced mucositis is a debilitating and often painful condition resulting in an inability to swallow, and thus inability to maintain adequate quality of life and overall functioning. To date, attempts on palliation of mucositis-related pain have primarily used topical anesthetic solutions and intravenous opioids; these approaches have achieved only limited success, particularly in oncology patients. The authors present a novel case of mucositis-related pain that is effectively treated with sublingual methadone. Sublingual methadone is an alternative to standa
