Social anxiety disorder is an extremely common and potentially disabling psychiatric disorder. Generalized social anxiety disorder, a subtype of the disorder, is believed to be the most common and most severe form. It is also the form that is most often associated with other psychiatric disorders. Unless the clinician has a high index of suspicion, social anxiety disorder may remain undetected. The clinical and treatment implications of the most common psychiatric comorbidities associated with social anxiety disorder are discussed in this article, with a focus on major depression, panic disord

Background: In our analysis of adolescents affected by the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, we observed many negative mental health effects in individuals with a prior history of psychological trauma. Elevated rates of depression and markers of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were observed, consistent with the hypothesis that prior trauma may reduce sensitivity thresholds for later psychopathology (stress sensitization). Surprisingly, levels of anxiety did not differ based on prior trauma history, nor were retraumatized individuals at increased risk for recent (past month) suicidal ideation.

Public health crises can significantly impact the emotional well-being of healthcare workers. Network analysis is a novel approach to exploring interactions between mental disorders at the symptom level. This study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and insomnia symptoms network among frontline nurses under sudden public health crisis. A cross-sectional survey was conducted online among 556 frontline nurses through convenience sampling in Hubei Province, China, from 21 February 2020, to 10 March 2020. Symptoms of PTSD, anxiety,

BACKGROUND: Mental health is an integral part of overall health. Mental health disorders following childbirth are common and poor maternal mental health has consequences for both the mother and her infant. Preeclampsia is also relatively common in pregnancy but there is little known about the intersection between these two important conditions. Gaining a better understanding of the psychological consequences following preeclampsia is important, especially the link with depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. If women who experience preeclampsia are recognised as being at increas

Sexual minority individuals are at increased risk for developing mental health disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prior research has identified that individuals with comorbid OCD and PTSD may have a more complex clinical presentation and worse treatment outcomes. Although PTSD is not the main focus of exposure with response prevention (ERP), the first-line therapy for OCD, symptoms are inadvertently targeted through overlapping mechanisms with exposure-based PTSD treatments. No prior research has compared sexual minority and heter

The vagus nerve has branches that extend to the brain and a number of peripheral organs. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) affects autonomic function through enhancement of parasympathetic activity and suppression of sympathetic activity. Because of these effects VNS has a number of potential therapeutic applications. This review focuses on the effects of transcutaneous cervical VNS (tcVNS) on autonomic function in two stress-related psychiatric disorders that are characterized by increased sympathetic function, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and opioid use disorder (OUD). We have studied th

Interest in psychedelic therapies for adults is rapidly growing, with substances like 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine for posttraumatic stress disorder, psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression, and lysergic acid diethylamide for generalized anxiety disorder showing promise. However, research on these therapies in children and adolescents is limited, with no recent trials. Despite this lack of scientific exploration, adolescents may still experiment with these substances for both recreational and therapeutic purposes as accessibility continues to increase. This raises significant concer

This umbrella review systematically synthesises the evidence on the impact of natural disasters on adult mental health from existing systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses. Nine electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses published between 2008 and 2024. The Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the study. Of the 16 included systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses, most of the time, they described the impact of natural disasters generally as a mix of any natural disaster, ear

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with high rates of avoidant, dependent and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders (cluster C-PD). It is unknown whether concurrent treatment for PTSD and comorbid cluster C-PD leads to superior treatment effects, compared to standalone trauma-focused treatment.
AIM: To test the efficacy of adding 52-58 sessions of PD treatment (group schema therapy; GST) to 12-18 sessions of individual trauma-focused treatment (imagery rescripting; ImRs).
METHOD: 130 adult outpatients were randomized to receive either ImRs or ImRs+GST. The ma

Background: Traumatic exposures are often assessed in clinical and research settings by a list of events chosen because they meet the definition of trauma required for the ICD-11 or DSM-5 diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some trauma measures include an 'other' option, with a text box enabling participants to describe an event not listed. Objective: There were three aims in this study: (1) to identify commonly endorsed 'other' events not listed on a standard measure of trauma exposure, (2) to identify thematic commonalities among these other events, and (3) to assess the preval

CSA (Childhood Sexual Abuse) represents a major health issue, however its detection in daily psychiatric practice is remains challenging. In adolescents, CSA often takes a back seat to diagnostic and behavioral issues such as suicide attempts and BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), with which it is frequently associated. Additionally, confusion persists between the perspective of complex trauma and conventional psychiatric diagnoses. This study aimed to compare clinical features of hospitalized adolescents with a history of CSA, to a control group, in order to identify clinical predictors o

Background: Women with substance use disorder (SUD) experience higher rates of violence exposure, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) than their non-substance-using peers. Exposure to violence in women with SUD is associated with PTSS symptom severity and leads to lower rates of treatment adherence, poorer treatment outcomes, and a higher risk for relapse. Little is known about the buffers to PTSS among violence-exposed women with SUD. Methods: A sample of 375 women with SUD were recruited from three inner-city intensive treatment centers, in a midw

Depression and some other illnesses are associated with increased self-reference and negative emotion in language. Research findings on lexical patterns in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) have been inconsistent. We conducted two studies to evaluate lexical markers of distress in BPD: First compared to healthy controls (HC), and later compared to Post-Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients and trauma-exposed controls (TC). Study 1 compared language use in BPD (n = 23) to HC (n = 22). Study 2 featured a new sample comprised of 4 subgroups: BPD (n = 26), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (P

INTRODUCTION: High dropout and low treatment attendance rates among patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and personality disorders (PDs) continue to pose a significant challenge. Despite numerous studies focusing on enhancing treatment attendance, the identification of consistent and reliable predictors in patients with PTSD and comorbid PDs remains limited.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate a wide range of potential predictors of treatment attendance, encompassing demographic, patient-severity, treatment, and therapist-related variables in patients with PTSD and comorb

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The provider-patient relationship is integral to medical practice and health outcomes, particularly among vulnerable patient populations. This study compared the provider-patient relationship among pregnant patients with opioid-use disorder (OUD), who did or did not have a history of moderate to severe trauma.
METHODS: This was an exploratory data analysis of 119 patients enrolled in the Support Models for Addiction Related Treatment trial. Probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was determined by a score ≥ 31 on the PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistic

Introduction: Cortical thickness (CT) and surface area (SA) are established biomarkers of brain pathology in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Structural covariance networks (SCNs) are represented as graphs with brain regions as nodes and correlations between nodes as edges. Methods: We built SCNs for PTSD and control groups using 148 CT and SA measures that were harmonized for site in n = 3439 subjects from Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA)-Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) PTSD. We compared centrality between PTSD and controls as well as interactions of d

The latent structure of ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder (PGD), as measured using the International Prolonged Grief Disorder Scale (IPGDS), was assessed in a large general population sample of bereaved adults from the United Kingdom. Data were derived from Wave 5 of the COVID-19 Psychological Research Consortium Study (C19PRC-UK). Exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) was used to assess the latent structure of the IPGDS. Identified factors were explored in relation to known correlates (i.e., gender, age of the bereaved, income, bereavement timeframe, age of the deceased) and functiona
