BACKGROUND: Oriental people have a square face with a prominent mandibular angle, which means masculine and coarse and is considered to be an unappealing feature. Reduction mandibuloplasty has become popular in the orient in the past 2 decades, and the operation was frequently performed through the intraoral approach. But an invisible mandibular angle forces the surgeon to perform blind ostectomy which leads to difficulty in performing an accurate ostectomy as planned, leaving unnatural mandibular contours and severe complications.

Reconstruction of the medial canthus following skin cancer excision is often challenging because of the complex anatomy and the cosmetic relevance of that region. The island pedicle advancement flap is an extremely versatile flap, which is commonly used to close defects in different body areas, including face, trunk, and extremities. We report our favourable experience with the use of island flaps, mobilized from the nasal saddle or lateral nasal side wall in 8 patients who had skin defects on the medial canthus region after Mohs micrographic surgery for basal cell carcinomas.

The results of treating 29 patients with Mirizzi syndrome are analyzed: 17 patients underwent traditional surgery, 11 patients--laparoscopic procedures, and endoscopic sphincterotomy with nasobiliary drainage was performed in a type I patient. Treatment of cholestasis by bile duct obstruction is nowadays dominated by endoscopy and other interventional measures. Intraductal concrements can be removed almost always without open surgery. This is as a rule achieved by a transpapillary approach with the additional use of lithothripsy. Percutaneous transhepatic treatment of concrements is restricted to patients in which a transpapillary approach is impossible. Stenoses of biliary ducts by malignancies are treated with plastic or metallic endoprosthesis if curative resection is precluded. Percutaneous drainage is a valid option in reserve.

Conservative surgery of selected breast-cancer tumors up to 4 cm in size gives rise to equivalent overall survival rates in both retrospective and randomized chmcal trials. Pilomatrixoma, also known as calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe, is a histological type of benign subcutaneous tumor arising from the cutaneous adnexa. We present our experience and the characteristic findings of a pilomatrixoma of the right thigh in a young healthy man. The lesion had grown slowly in size over the past year and this was the reason for referral to the Department of Plastic Surgery.
