[Apraxia of the larynx].

Disturbances of vocal function in patients with apraxia of speech are well known in the literature and have often been described. Although apraxia of phonation is presumed, only 1 case is mentioned in the literature. We present a 51-year-old man (with missing signs of dysarthria and aphasia after spontaneous right temproparietal hemorrhagia) who had aphonia and missing respiration during speaking, whereas articulation was nearly undisturbed. After differential diagnostic exclusion of other central disorders of phonation we classify this patient as having apraxia of phonation or laryngeal aprax

Increased vasopressin secretion and release in mice transgenic for the rat arginine vasopressin gene.

The rat arginine vasopressin (AVP) genomic sequence has been utilized to develop a line of transgenic mice homozygous and heterozygous for the transgene. Expression of the rat AVP gene was demonstrated by Southern blotting and resulted in increased amounts of AVP in hypothalamus and frontotemporal brain cortex. Secretion of AVP from the neurohypophysial system results in an increased concentration of the hormone in the plasma and in an increased excretion in the urine in amounts three to five times those of normal mice. Extraneural ectopic hormone production was found only in the pancreas. Des

Action of the diabetogenic drug streptozotocin on glycolytic and glycogenolytic metabolism in adult rat brain cortex and hippocampus.

In sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD), a number of metabolic alterations to the brain have been observed soon after the onset of the initial clinical symptoms. In particular, impairments of glucose utilization and related metabolic pathways are prominent and well-established findings in incipient AD, resembling metabolic abnormalities such as have been found in noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. To mimic these abnormalities, we administered an intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of streptozotocin (STZ) to rats and studied the effects of glucose and glycogen metabolism in the cerebral c

Optic aphasia, optic apraxia, and loss of dreaming.

A 47-year-old man with a left temporo-occipital infarct in the area of the posterior cerebral artery is presented. The neuropsychological examination did not reveal aphasia or gross mental deficits. The patient presented with alexia without agraphia, color agnosia, but few visual perceptual deficits. The main impairment was in confrontation naming; he was incapable of naming objects and pictures, not from lack of recognition (excluding visual agnosia) but from lack of access to the appropriate word (optic aphasia). The patient also exhibited a deficit in the evocation of gesture from the visua

Regional pattern of degeneration in Alzheimer's disease: neuronal loss and histopathological grading.

The various structural components of the cortical degeneration of Alzheimer's disease were defined and graded. The severity of the degenerative process was thus mapped in different cortical areas where neuronal numbers and cortical width were also measured and compared with controls. Contrary to the general opinion that the degenerative process is rather uniformly diffuse, though accentuated in the medial temporal and frontal cortex, we found a consistent and more elaborate pattern with clearcut regional differences. Thus the degeneration involved, besides basal medial temporal limbic areas, t

Loss of color vision and Stiles' II1 mechanism in a patient with cerebral infarction.

A 70-year old man developed achromatopsia with bilateral loss of superior visual fields and an inability to recognize familiar faces (prosopagnosia). Ophthalmologic examination results were normal. Visual acuity was 20/25 in either eye. Computerized axial tomography of the brain revealed infarction of the inferior aspect of the temporal occipital cortex in both hemispheres. The patient's complaint that objects appeared only in shades of gray was supported by large errors made throughout the spectrum on the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test and by matches over the entire red/green range on the Na

A prospective controlled study on the impact of anterior temporal lobectomy on dream content.

OBJECTIVE: Changes of dream ability and content in patients with brain lesions have been addressed in only about 100 case reports. All of these reports lack data regarding prelesional baseline dream content. Therefore, it was the objective of this study to prospectively assess dream content before and after anterior temporal lobectomy. METHODS: Using the Hall and Van de Castle system, 30 dreams before and 21 dreams after anterior temporal lobectomy for drug-resistant epilepsy were analyzed. Fifty-five dreams before and 60 dreams after stereoelectroencephalography served as controls. RESULTS:…

[Congenital bilateral perisylvian syndrome: a case report].

Congenital bilateral perisylvian syndrome (CBPS) is rare in literature, especially in China. In this article, we report the clinical and treatment of a patient with CBPS and discuss its mechanism, clinical features and therapy. This patient was a 28-year-old man. His main clinical features were pseudobulbar palsy, cognitive deficits and intractable epilepsy. MRI shows bilateral thickening of the cortex around the sylvian fissures which were deeper than normal and polymicrogyria. The electroencephalogram demonstrated slow spike in right temporal lobe and left frontal lobe. Rhythmal 4 Hz theta w…

Modulating the activity of the right temporoparietal junction alters the willingness to compete: the role of overconfidence.

The decision to compete is a fundamental choice with significant real-world consequences, yet its underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. This decision requires reasoning about others' abilities and comparing them to one's own-a process susceptible to overconfidence and heavily reliant on the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ), a key hub for social cognition. Using transcranial direct current stimulation, we causally investigated the rTPJ's role in competitive willingness. Participants received anodal, cathodal, or sham stimulation over the rTPJ before choosing whether to ent

Rapid eye movement sleep without atonia in patients with sleep-related fronto-temporal epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) increase during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and decrease or disappear in REM sleep, especially during phasic REM sleep. REM sleep without atonia (RSWA), and its possible effects on IEDs, has not yet been studied. METHODS: A retrospective review of 10-year data retrieved 205 adults with fronto-temporal epilepsy, with full clinical data, 18-channel EEG and polysomnography. Tonic and phasic REM sleep periods were analyzed, and REM atonia was scored with the latest criteria. EEG recordings and IEDs were also re-evaluated in NREM sleep

Arithmetic fact retrieval deficits in chronic stroke - A deficit of relearning?

In acute stroke patients, arithmetic fact retrieval deficits have been observed due to disrupted white matter connections within a left-hemispheric network centered around the angular gyrus and middle temporal gyrus (Smaczny et al., 2023). However, it remains unclear which specific structural disconnections also hinder successful remediation in the chronic stage of stroke. In this study, 92 patients were examined to determine which impairments continue to affect multiplication performance even in the chronic phase after a first-time unilateral left-hemispheric stroke. Our results revealed a st

Abstract representations emerge in human hippocampal neurons during inference.

Humans have the remarkable cognitive capacity to rapidly adapt to changing environments. Central to this capacity is the ability to form high-level, abstract representations that take advantage of regularities in the world to support generalization1. However, little is known about how these representations are encoded in populations of neurons, how they emerge through learning and how they relate to behaviour2,3. Here we characterized the representational geometry of populations of neurons (single units) recorded in the hippocampus, amygdala, medial frontal cortex and ventral temporal cortex o

Comparing high definition transcranial direct current stimulation to left temporoparietal junction and left inferior frontal gyrus for logopenic primary progressive aphasia: A single-case study.

Logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA) is characterized by word-finding deficits and phonologic errors in fluent speech. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) targeting either left temporoparietal junction (TPJ) or left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) show evidence of improving language function in lvPPA. The present case study evaluated the effects of two separate rounds of high definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) (4 mA; 30 sessions) on language and functional neuroimaging in a 57-year-old woman with lvPPA. Stimulation was centred on two different regions across rounds: (1) left TP

Two-dimensional neural geometry underpins hierarchical organization of sequence in human working memory.

Working memory (WM) is constructive in nature. Instead of passively retaining information, WM reorganizes complex sequences into hierarchically embedded chunks to overcome capacity limits and facilitate flexible behaviour. Here, to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying hierarchical reorganization in WM, we performed two electroencephalography and one magnetoencephalography experiments, wherein humans retain in WM a temporal sequence of items, that is, syllables, which are organized into chunks, that is, multisyllabic words. We demonstrate that the one-dimensional sequence is represented

Temporal division of the decision-making process: An EEG study.

Decision-making is a process that allows individuals to choose an option or alternative in order to maximize a subjective gain or achieve a set goal by evaluating and establishing a preference based on contextual and internal information. Ernst and Paulus proposed a three-stage temporal division of this process: 1) the assessment and formation of preferences among possible options; 2) the selection and execution of an action; and 3) the experience or evaluation of an outcome. Each stage involves the participation of several brain regions, including the prefrontal, parietal, and temporal cortic

Reduced synchrony in alpha oscillations during life predicts post mortem neurofibrillary tangle density in early-onset and atypical Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Neurophysiological manifestations selectively associated with amyloid beta and tau depositions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are useful network biomarkers to identify peptide specific pathological processes. The objective of this study was to validate the associations between reduced neuronal synchrony within alpha oscillations and neurofibrillary tangle (NFT) density in autopsy examination, in patients with AD. METHODS: In a well-characterized clinicopathological cohort of AD patients (n = 13), we quantified neuronal synchrony within alpha (8-12 Hz) and delta-theta (2-8 Hz) oscil
