IMPORTANCE: This study is important as it challenges the effectiveness of silver-coated catheters in reducing urinary tract infections (UTIs) after pelvic floor surgery (PFS).
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of UTIs in patients using silver-coated silicone transurethral indwelling catheters (TICs) compared with standard silicone TICs among women with postoperative urinary retention following PFS.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a double-blind, randomized controlled trial of women undergoing PFS between June 2022 and February 2024 with postoperative urinary retention.

Urethral catheters often become encrusted with crystals of magnesium struvite and calcium phosphate. The encrustation can block the catheter, which can cause urine retention in the bladder and reflux into the kidneys. We develop a mathematical model to investigate crystal deposition on the catheter surface, modelling the bladder as a reservoir of fluid and the urethral catheter as a rigid channel. Once previously attempted conservative maneuvers have failed, iatrogenic persistent urinary fistulas usually require difficult repeated operations. We describe 3 patients in whom cyanoacrylic glue was used to repair endoscopically persistent urinary fistulas occurring after major pelvic surgery. At a mean follow-up of 21 months, all patients were free of urinary leakage and had no evidence of recurrent urinary fistulas. This approach may represent a safe and effective way to repair postoperative urinary fistulas.

From October, 1987, to August, 1990, 47 patients underwent an ileal low pressure bladder replacement using the Hautmann procedure after radical cystoprostatectomy for bladder cancer.
