A synbiotic containing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum [American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) strain identifier 202195] and fructooligosaccharide was reported to reduce the risk of sepsis in young infants in rural India. Here, the whole genome of two isolates of L. plantarum ATCC 202195, which were deposited to the ATCC approximately 20 years apart, were sequenced and analyzed to verify their taxonomic and strain-level identities, identify potential antimicrobial resistant genes and virulence factors, and identify genetic characteristics that may explain the observed clinical effects of L. pla

Antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections have become global issues for public health, which increases the utter need to develop alternatives to antibiotics. Here, the HSER (Homo sapiens retinoic acid receptor) peptide was designed from retinoic acid receptor responder protein 2 of Homo sapiens, and was conjugated with synthesized CQDs (carbon quantum dots) for enhanced antibacterial activity in combination, as individually they are not highly effective. The HSER-CQDs were characterized using spectrophotometer, HPLC coupled with electrospray-ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectromet

In this study, the microbial communities of two nests of black garden ants (Lasius niger) in the hollows of stem branches of old apple trees were found to have similar species compositions: each community contained representatives of three species from the Bacillaceae family and one species of actinomycetes from the genus Streptomyces. In total, four types of bacilli and two actinomycetes were isolated. Actinomycetes were identified as Streptomyces antibioticus-like and Streptomyces sp. None of the bacilli had antibiotic activity, whereas both streptomycetes produced antibiotics that inhibited

The increase in multi-drug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in the last years has become a public health problem. MDROs are partially responsible for numerous nosocomial infections, extended hospital stays, high costs, and high mortality. In addition to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), Gram-negative bacteria are also a key area of focus. The knowledge of MDROs among the medical staff in the occupational context is limited, with the exception of MRSA. Therefore, a systematic review was carried out to determine the occupational risk for em

The widespread use of antibiotics has significantly increased the number of resistant bacteria, which has also increased the urgency of rapid bacterial detection and profiling their antibiotic response. Current clinical methods for antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) rely on culture and require at least 16 to 24 h to conduct. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a rapid method that can test the susceptibility of bacteria in a culture-free manner. Here we demonstrate a rapid AST method by monitoring the glucose metabolic activity of live bacteria at the single-cell level with hyperspectra

It has been widely reported that the incidence and severity of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) have increased dramatically in North America and Europe. However, little is known about CDI in Mainland China. In this study, we aimed to investigate the incidence of CDI and the main epidemic and drug-resistant strains of C. difficile in Mainland China through meta-analysis of related studies published after the year 2010. A total of 51 eligible studies were included. The pooled incidence of toxigenic C. difficile among patients with diarrhoea was 14% (95% CI = 12-16%). In Mainland China, ST-3

INTRODUCTION: Inpatient treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs) exerts a significant economic burden on the healthcare system. Oritavancin is a concentration-dependent, rapid bactericidal agent approved for the treatment of ABSSSIs. Its prolonged half-life with one-time intravenous (i.v.) dosing offers a potential solution to this burden. In addition, oritavancin represents an alternative therapy for Streptococci and multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus. Animal mo

Pathogenic food-borne bacteria have been associated with severe morbidity and mortality in humans and animals. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., and Escherichia coli present in cattle and pigs slaughtered in selected abattoirs in Vhembe District and at determining the susceptibility of the isolates to antibiotics. A total of 176 swab samples (28 cattle and 16 pigs) of the rump, flank, brisket, and neck of the animals were analyzed using standard microbiological methods. E. coli isolates were genotyped to detect pathogenic strains. Of

While β-lactam antibiotics are a critical part of the antimicrobial arsenal, they are frequently compromised by various resistance mechanisms, including changes in penicillin binding proteins of the bacterial cell wall. Genetic deletion of the penicillin binding protein and serine/threonine kinase-associated protein (PASTA) kinase in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been shown to restore β-lactam susceptibility. However, the mechanism remains unclear, and whether pharmacologic inhibition would have the same effect is unknown. In this study, we found that deletion or pharm

In the present study, the essential oil isolated from the buds of Cleistocalyx operculatus by hydrodistillation was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. A total of 55 compounds representing 93.71% of the oil were identified. The oil significantly inhibited the growth of food spoilage (FS), food-borne (FB), skin pathogens (SP), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) and multiantibiotic-resistant bacteria (MARB). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the oil against the tested microorganisms were found

From March to October 1999, 854 patients hospitalized at 10 major Norwegian hospitals were screened for rectal carriage of ampicillin-resistant enterococci (ARE) and high-level gentamicin-resistant enterococci (HLGRE). A total of 59 ARE carriers (prevalence 6.9%, range 0-22% among hospitals) and 28 HLGRE carriers (prevalence 3.3%, range 1-11%) were detected. All ARE or HLGRE strains were susceptible to vancomycin, whereas 77% of the ARE isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin. All the ARE strains were identified as Enterococcus faecium, and 48% of these were genomically closely related as sho

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was initially detected in Europe in the 1960s, soon after the introduction of methicillin. Naturally-resistant strains were isolated in some countries before the use of methicillin or related agents. These strains probably spread initially from one or more ancestral genetic clones in natural populations of S. aureus by horizontal transfer and recombination. These original strains, possibly emerging in many countries, then increased in numbers and diversity in hospitals as a result of selection by exposure to antibiotics and by cross-infection. After

BACKGROUND: Nursing homes residents have a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) colonization. Recent trials demonstrated that decolonizing residents reduces infection. However, decolonization's impact on environmental MDRO contamination is not well understood.
METHODS: We performed a 9-month pilot (3-month baseline, 3-month phase-in and 3-month intervention) in 3 nursing homes implementing routine chlorhexidine bathing/showering and nasal iodophor. We repeatedly tested for colonization via skin and nasal swabs for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomyci

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health threat. This phenomenon involves the diffusion of bacteria and genes among humans, animals and the environment. In particular, the presence of third generation cephalosporin (3GC)-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in natural environments is of high concern as they are classified as critical-priority pathogens of public health importance. In this work we studied the relation among plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems, the spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and diffusion of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Caged plastic fra

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pyogenes causes a broad spectrum of invasive and non-invasive infections globally, associated with high morbidity and mortality. In mainland China, distribution of the emm genotype has shifted markedly over recent decades, with emm12 emerging as the dominant type. Meanwhile, resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, and tetracyclines has reached extremely high levels, severely limiting clinical treatment options and leading to the designation of S. pyogenes as a medium-priority pathogen by the World Health Organization.
METHODS: A total of 133 non-duplicate S. pyogenes

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections globally, increasingly driven by the continous emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) uropathogens that complicate empirical therapy. This study employed an integrated phenotypic-genotypic approach to characterize antimicrobial resistance patterns and their therapeutic implications in a high-burden North Indian cohort. A prospective study was conducted from June 2024 to November 2025, including 1140 patients with suspected UTIs. Bacterial isolates were identified from patients with significant bacteriuria using bioc
