The influence of subjective confidence on speed perception in peripheral vision.

This study aimed to determine whether speed perception in peripheral vision is modulated by subjective confidence and whether pupil size can serve as an objective indicator of confidence. Previous studies have reported that perceived speed decreases with increasing eccentricity. Based on the principles of a Bayesian model, we employed a two-alternative forced-choice task. Observers judged whether a test stimulus was faster or slower than an 8 deg/s reference stimulus at 5 deg eccentricity, then rated their confidence on a 1-4 scale. The test stimulus appeared at either 5 or 15 deg eccentricity

Autoimmune retinopathy in patients with myasthenia gravis: cases series and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed a higher frequency of concurrent autoimmune disease (AD) in patients with Myasthenia gravis (MG), but very few cases on MG patients complicated with AIR have been reported in preview literature. The goal of this study was to present three cases of autoimmune retinopathy (AIR) with myasthenia gravis (MG), conduct a literature search, and summarize the clinical characteristics of this entity. METHODS: Case series and literature review. RESULTS: The seven AIR patients with MG were six females and a male with a mean age of 41.29(± 15.22)years old. Five had thy

Progressive Hand Stiffness and Numbness in a Child: An Atypical Neurological Presentation of Scheie Syndrome-A Case Report.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Scheie syndrome is the attenuated phenotype of mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I), a lysosomal storage disorder resulting from partial deficiency of α-L-iduronidase. The attenuated clinical spectrum and absence of cognitive impairment often delay recognition. Early manifestations may mimic common pediatric conditions, leading to repeated evaluations without a definitive diagnosis. METHODS: We describe a 12-year-old girl who presented with slowly progressive bilateral hand stiffness, weak grip strength, and intermittent sensory symptoms over one year. Her initial inves

Temporal recalibration in response to delayed visual feedback of active versus passive actions: an fMRI study.

The brain can adapt its expectations about the relative timing of actions and their sensory outcomes in a process known as temporal recalibration. This might occur as the recalibration of timing between the sensory (e.g. visual) outcome and (1) the motor act (sensorimotor) or (2) tactile/proprioceptive information (inter-sensory). This fMRI recalibration study investigated sensorimotor contributions to temporal recalibration by comparing active and passive conditions. Subjects were repeatedly exposed to delayed (150 ms) or undelayed visual stimuli, triggered by active or passive button presses

Quantitative analysis of prion disease using an AI-powered digital pathology framework.

Prion disease is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterized by accumulation of an abnormal prion protein (PrPSc) in the central nervous system. To identify PrPSc aggregates for diagnostic purposes, pathologists use immunohistochemical staining of prion protein antibodies on tissue samples. With digital pathology, artificial intelligence can now analyze stained slides. In this study, we developed an automated pipeline for the identification of PrPSc aggregates in tissue samples from the cerebellar and occipital cortex. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first framework to evaluate

Association between Third Mobile Window Disorders and Symptom Reduction Using a Noise Cancelling Device: Inverse Tullio Phenomena.

Identifying a vestibular source of pathology in patients complaining of post-traumatic brain injury (TBI) dizziness can be difficult. We describe a possible new method utilizing a reduction in post-TBI symptoms (including dizziness) with the use of a noise cancellation device (NCD). This retrospective case series included patients with TBI and dizziness presenting to a binocular vision specialty clinic, who were diagnosed with a vertical heterophoria (VH). If they did not respond adequately to microprism lenses and/or if they experienced hyperacusis, they were evaluated with an NCD. If there w

Fully-automated atrophy segmentation in dry age-related macular degeneration in optical coherence tomography.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive retinal disease, causing vision loss. A more detailed characterization of its atrophic form became possible thanks to the introduction of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). However, manual atrophy quantification in 3D retinal scans is a tedious task and prevents taking full advantage of the accurate retina depiction. In this study we developed a fully automated algorithm segmenting Retinal Pigment Epithelial and Outer Retinal Atrophy (RORA) in dry AMD on macular OCT. 62 SD-OCT scans from eyes with atrophic AMD (57 patients) were collecte

Advances in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize recent advances in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA). RECENT FINDINGS: Less common manifestations of GCA include corneal edema, proptosis from lacrimal gland ischemia and sensorineuronal hearing loss. Histology studies have suggested that temporal artery biopsies (TAB) with fixed specimen lengths of 15 mm may be adequate to prevent false negative biopsies. In centers with appropriate radiologic expertise, a European rheumatology consensus guideline has proposed Doppler ultrasound as a first-line confirmatory test for GCA in lieu of temporal artery bio
