Radixin modulates the function of outer hair cell stereocilia.

The stereocilia of the inner ear sensory cells contain the actin-binding protein radixin, encoded by RDX. Radixin is important for hearing but remains functionally obscure. To determine how radixin influences hearing sensitivity, we used a custom rapid imaging technique to visualize stereocilia motion while measuring electrical potential amplitudes during acoustic stimulation. Radixin inhibition decreased sound-evoked electrical potentials. Other functional measures, including electrically induced sensory cell motility and sound-evoked stereocilia deflections, showed a minor amplitude increase

Limitations of Standard Accessible Captioning of Sounds and Music for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People: An EEG Study.

Captioning is the process of transcribing speech and acoustical information into text to help deaf and hard of hearing people accessing to the auditory track of audiovisual media. In addition to the verbal transcription, it includes information such as sound effects, speaker identification, or music tagging. However, it just takes into account a limited spectrum of the whole acoustic information available in the soundtrack, and hence, an important amount of emotional information is lost when attending just to the normative compliant captions. In this article, it is shown, by means of behaviora

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Therapy in the Uterine Fibroid: A Clinical Case Study of Poor Heating Efficacy.

A clinical case study of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) treatment in the uterine fibroid was conducted. During the therapy, poor heating efficacy was observed which could be attributed to several factors such as the local perfusion rate, patient-specific anatomy or changes in acoustic parameters of the ultrasound field. In order to determine the cause of the diminished heating, perfusion analyses and ultrasound simulations were conducted using the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from the treatment. The perfusion analysis showed high local perfusion rate in the myoma (301.0 ± 25

Evaluation of Voice Quality in Patients With Vocal Fold Polyps: The Size of a Polyp Matters or Does it?

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the correlation between morphological features of vocal fold polyps (VFPs) and subjective/objective voice parameters. METHODS: Perceptual evaluations, aerodynamic and acoustic tests were performed on 47 patients with VFPs. Still images were captured from video and the morphological features associated with the size of VFP were quantified. To reveal the correlation between size-related morphological features (length of polyp base, the ratio of polyp base to vocal fold length, glottal gap area) and objective/subjective parameters of voice, Pearson's an

Expanding pediatric cochlear implant candidacy: A case study of electro-natural stimulation (ENS) in partial deafness treatment.

BACKGROUND: Some adolescents have hearing impairments characterized by normal or slightly elevated thresholds in the low and mid-frequency bands (below 1500 Hz) and nearly total deafness in the high frequency range. These patients often remain beyond the scope of effective hearing aid treatment. CASE REPORT: This study presents the case of a 16-year-old adolescent with good hearing in the range 125-1500 Hz and deafness at other frequencies. An implant was used to restore hearing at high frequencies, while preserving low and mid frequency acoustic hearing in the implanted ear. This is describe

Speech-related fatigue and fatigability in Parkinson's disease.

This study tested the assumption that speech is more susceptible to fatigue than normal in persons with dysarthria. After 1 h of speech-like exercises, participants with Parkinson's disease (PD) were expected to report increased perceptions of fatigue and demonstrate fatigability by producing less precise speech with corresponding acoustic changes compared to neurologically normal participants. Twelve adults with idiopathic PD and 13 neurologically normal adults produced sentences with multiple lingual targets before and after six 10-min blocks of fast syllable or word productions. Both groups

Drill-induced noise level during cochleostomy.

CONCLUSIONS: Noise induced by drilling during cochleostomy is of high level and can cause acoustic trauma to the inner ear, particularly after the membranous labyrinth has been exposed. Our method utilizes non-invasive noise measurement and the equipment that is connected to the operative area can be sterilized, thus it can be applied to intraoperative recordings. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the noise level generated by otological electrical drills during the cochleostomy procedure and to further explore the feasibility of noise monitoring in vivo. METHODS: Acoustic measurements during drilli

On the role of glottis-interior sources in the production of voiced sound.

The voice source is dominated by aeroacoustic sources downstream of the glottis. In this paper an investigation is made of the contribution to voiced speech of secondary sources within the glottis. The acoustic waveform is ultimately determined by the volume velocity of air at the glottis, which is controlled by vocal fold vibration, pressure forcing from the lungs, and unsteady backreactions from the sound and from the supraglottal air jet. The theory of aerodynamic sound is applied to study the influence on the fine details of the acoustic waveform of "potential flow" added-mass-type glottal

Analogy between laryngeal gesture in Mongolian Long Song and supracricoid partial laryngectomy.

This article reports the results of a multiparametrical analysis of Mongolian Long Song, characterised by multiple ornamentation and shows the similarities between the laryngeal behaviour observed during these ornamentations and the compensatory gesture produced by patients after supracricoid partial laryngectomy. This study includes (1) a physiological analysis of videofiberscopic laryngeal data from a healthy Mongolian singer and from three non-singer French-speaking clinical patients; and (2) an acoustical analysis (fundamental frequency and intensity). For the singer, the fiberoptic analys

The tolerance of the maxilla to blunt impact.

This study reports the results of 38 infraorbital maxilla impacts performed on male cadavers. Impacts were performed using an unpadded, cylindrical impactor (3.2 kg) at velocities between 1 and 5 m/s. The peak force and acoustic emission data were used to develop a statistical relationship of fracture risk as a function of impact force. Acoustic emission sensors were used to provide a noncensored measure of the maxilla tolerance and were essential due to the increase in impactor force after fracture onset. Parametric and nonparametric techniques were used to estimate the risk of fracture toler

Low-frequency therapeutic ultrasound with varied duty cycle: effects on the ischemic brain and the inner ear.

Sonothrombolysis is a promising modality for acute stroke treatment. In vitro data suggest a duty cycle dependence of sonothrombolytic efficacy of low-frequency applications. The aim of our study was to examine its impact on safety issues in a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion. Rats were exposed to transcranial 60-kHz ultrasound with varied duty cycles. To determine effects on the inner ear, the acoustic threshold was determined in additional healthy animals (acoustic evoked potentials). A short duty cycle (20%) resulted in significant adverse effects (ischemic volume, hemorrhage,

Rapid formation of robust auditory memories: insights from noise.

Before a natural sound can be recognized, an auditory signature of its source must be learned through experience. Here we used random waveforms to probe the formation of new memories for arbitrary complex sounds. A behavioral measure was designed, based on the detection of repetitions embedded in noises up to 4 s long. Unbeknownst to listeners, some noise samples reoccurred randomly throughout an experimental block. Results showed that repeated exposure induced learning for otherwise totally unpredictable and meaningless sounds. The learning was unsupervised and resilient to interference from

Effects of different factors of ultrasound treatment on the extraction yield of the all-trans-β-carotene from citrus peels.

The effects of different factors, including the material's particle size, the extraction solvent, solid/solvent ratio, temperature, extraction time, the electrical acoustic intensity, liquid height and duty cycle of ultrasound exposure on the extraction yield of all-trans-β-carotene from citrus peels by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) were investigated. The extraction yield was significantly affected by particle size. Dichloromethane caused the degradation of all-trans-β-carotene extracted during UAE. Ethanol showed a pronounced higher extraction yield during UAE in comparison with classi

Cepstral analysis of voice in persons with vocal nodules.

OBJECTIVES: Traditional measures of dysphonia were reported to be unreliable, and the measurements of cepstral peak prominence (CPP) have been shown to correlate well with perceptions of breathiness. Hence, the present study was hypothesized that there would be abnormal reduction of the cepstral peak in the speakers with vocal nodules relative to the normal controls as they are characterized by hoarse and breathy voice due to inadequate closure of vocal folds. METHOD: Phonation of sustained vowel /a/ was subjected to acoustic analysis using Computerized Speech Lab (CSL model 4150) software. T

The effects of surgical rapid maxillary expansion (SRME) on vowel formants.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of surgical rapid maxillary expansion (SRME) on vowel production. The subjects included 12 patients, whose speech were considered perceptually normal, that had undergone surgical RME for expansion of a narrow maxilla. They uttered the following Turkish vowels, ([a], [e], [dotless i], [i], [o], [oe], [u], [y]), in isolation before and after the maxillary expansion. These samples were recorded for acoustical analysis. The fundamental frequencies (F0) and the frequencies and bandwidths of the first two formants (F1 and F2) of the vowels we

The use of bronchial challenge to diagnose asthma in preschool children.

Wheezing and respiratory symptoms are very common in preschool children, and the ability to diagnose asthma correctly is important. This review describes an approach to the diagnosis of asthma in preschool children by means of an inhalation bronchial challenge. The child is exposed to increasing doses of challenge agent until wheezing is detected at a dose below that at which normal subjects respond, thus indicating bronchial hyperreactivity. The technique was originally developed using simple stethoscope auscultation of the lungs together with recording of respiratory rate and oxygen saturati

Suitability of dysphonia measurements for telemonitoring of Parkinson's disease.

We present an assessment of the practical value of existing traditional and non-standard measures for discriminating healthy people from people with Parkinson's disease (PD) by detecting dysphonia. We introduce a new measure of dysphonia, Pitch Period Entropy (PPE), which is robust to many uncontrollable confounding effects including noisy acoustic environments and normal, healthy variations in voice frequency. We collected sustained phonations from 31 people, 23 with PD. We then selected 10 highly uncorrelated measures, and an exhaustive search of all possible combinations of these measures f
