Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and West Nile virus infection become increasingly frequent in Europe. These developments require preparedness and coordinated response mechanisms across countries and sectors. Vector control is a central component of public health response, both for containing outbreaks and for reducing the risk of disease emergence. While mosquito control is important, evidence on the cost-effectiveness of most methods remains limited, complicating the design of evidence-based vector management strategies. In addition, the range of authorised vector control

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed profound weaknesses in global infectious disease surveillance yet, in its aftermath, pandemic-prone threats have intensified rather than receded. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary evidence on three converging drivers of pandemic risk zoonotic emergence, antimicrobial resistance, and climate-sensitive disease expansion and examines how structural failures in surveillance and global health governance amplify their impact. Drawing on recent epidemiological analyses, policy reports, and One Health evaluations, the review maps post-COVID surges in zoonotic

A commensal organism has transformed into the leading multidrug resistant (MDR) hospital acquired pathogen, with serious implication on global public health. The ability of Enterococcus faecium to rapidly adapt through its great genomic plasticity, horizontal gene transfer and under selective pressures created by heavy antibiotic application both clinically and non-clinically is responsible for the phenomenon. Comparative genome studies have reported the presence of different community acquired and hospital acquired clades; hospital acquired clones being particularly the clonal complex 17 have

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an urgent public health challenge, and the horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) mediated by mobile genetic elements (MGEs) accelerates its spread worldwide. Despite the recognized role of integrative conjugative elements (ICEs) in conjugative gene transfer, ICE-mediated horizontal gene transfer (HGT) remains underexplored, particularly for SXT ICEs, which are widely disseminated and relevant to animal and human health. Cyromazine, a widely used veterinary drug frequently detected in livestock feces and associated environments, is linked

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers that affects women globally. Of central concern are Black women in the United Kingdom who are disproportionately affected, present late and suffer higher mortality due to poor early screening uptake. Informed by an interpretative phenomenological analytical lens, this study makes an original and significant contribution to address the gap by working with 15 Black women from the north of England to co-produce an art-based media campaign intervention designed to encourage early breast cancer screening uptake.
METHOD: N = 10 participant

Integrating dietary interventions have been extensively studied for their health benefits, such as Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and aging. However, it is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms of long-term effects and practical applications of these dietary interventions for health. A 10-week intermittent fasting (IMF) regimen was implemented on the aging animals in the current study. The variations of cerebral functions were analyzed employing a comprehensive experimental design that includes behavioral tests, neuroimaging, and ultrastructural analysis, such as resting-sta

Tumor initiation remains one of the least understood events in cancer biology, largely due to the challenge of dissecting the intricacy of the tumorigenic process in laboratory settings. The insufficient biological complexity of conventional in vitro systems makes animal models the primary experimental approach to study tumorigenesis. Despite providing valuable insights, these in vivo models function as experimental black boxes with limited spatiotemporal resolution of cellular dynamics during oncogenesis. In addition, their use raises ethical concerns, further underscoring the need for altern

Endometrial cancer (EC) is a common malignant disease in women, originating from the endometrial tissue. Over the past few decades, the global incidence rate of EC has gradually increased, and the affected population has become progressively younger. Traditional treatment methods, such as surgery and adjuvant therapy, have considerable toxic side effects. Furthermore, their therapeutic effectiveness is significantly very uncertain. Therefore, the search for a new type of treatment for EC is a top priority. Natural products are a class of compounds found in nature that have a wide range of biol

Porcine gut microbiota plays a crucial role in the health and productive performance of pigs, influencing nutrient absorption, feed conversion efficiency, and ultimately, production profitability. In addition to being the primary site of digestion, the intestine houses the pig's largest immune organ, where the microbial community is essential for overall well-being. During the piglet stage, the gut microbiota undergoes a dynamic evolution, gradually adapting to the host environment. This plasticity presents opportunities to intervene and optimize its composition from early stages, enhancing an

Mitochondria play a central role in metabolism and biosynthesis, but function also as platforms that perceive and communicate environmental and physiological stressors to the nucleus and distal tissues. Systemic mitochondrial signaling is thought to synchronize and amplify stress responses throughout the whole body, but during severe or chronic damage, overactivation of mitochondrial stress pathways may be maladaptive and exacerbate aging and metabolic disorders. Here we uncover a protective micro(mi)RNA response to mtDNA damage in Caenorhabditis elegans that prolongs tissue health and functio

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pose significant threats to public health and environmental safety, yet the mobility and hosts of ARGs in animal manure-soil systems remain poorly understood. Here, we evaluated the environmental risks of tilmicosin (TIL) and investigated ARG profiles, mobility, and drivers in pig manure-soil systems using metagenomic assembly. TIL was effectively degraded during aerobic composting and fertilization via hydroxylation, demethylation, and deglycosylation. Notably, the total abundance of ARGs significantly decreased during aerobic composting and fertilization, a

Tick-borne bacterial pathogens from animals play a significant role in the (re)emergence of human diseases. Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato, a globally prevalent tick, predominantly parasitises domestic dogs but can also feed on humans. We characterised temporal changes in the bacterial microbiome of the midgut and salivary gland tissues of R. sanguineus s.l. ticks and analysed their potential as reservoirs for pathogenic bacteria. A 16 S microbiome and amplicon sequence variant (ASV) approach was used to study the bacteria present in the tissues of R. sanguineus s.l. ticks collected from

The amplitude of the phasic output of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) into the hypothalamus-pituitary portal capillaries is likely controlled by the TRH-degrading ectoenzyme (TRH-DE) expressed on the surface of median eminence (ME) β2-tanycytes. To extend this hypothesis, we performed experiments on adult rodents reared in standard conditions. TRH-DE was close to the putative sites of TRH release in the male rat external layer of the ME. In global Trhde knockout mice, basal hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis parameters were not altered but we detected an increased vimentin (a tanycy

In the prevention and control of animal diseases, synbiotics combine the principles of probiotics and prebiotics, which play crucial roles in reducing intestinal disorders, such as diarrhea and indigestion, enhancing immune function, and decreasing the incidence of respiratory diseases in livestock and poultry. Following the confirmation of the prebiotic activity of lentinan, this study aimed to use microencapsulation technology to prepare synbiotics composed of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) and lentinan. The optimal preparation process for the synbiotic microcapsules was determ

Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK, A. muciniphila) fortifies the intestinal barrier, inhibits the colonization of pathogenic bacteria, and protects the host's health. Nevertheless, the existing literature offers inadequate evidence to ascertain whether A. muciniphila can effectively treat Candida albicans (C. albicans) infections in vitro, and the underlying mechanisms remain ambiguous. This study, animal models were established through gavage with clinical isolates of C. albicans to induce gastrointestinal tract colonization and subsequent translocation infection. The models were subsequently admi

BACKGROUND: Animal-assisted services are increasingly common in the United Kingdom (UK) but scarcely evaluated. Dogs for Good, a UK-based charity, launched a community dog service to promote physical and mental health in underserved groups. This service evaluation explored participant experiences of this service, and how the service may 'work'.
METHODS: The evaluation involved reviewing feedback forms and conducting semi-structured interviews with six participants who delivered or engaged with the service. A preliminary exploration of data using thematic analysis are presented.
RESULTS: The

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with significant social, communicative, and behavioral challenges, and its prevalence is increasing globally at an alarming rate. Children with ASD often have nutritional imbalances, and multiple micronutrient deficiencies. Among these, zinc (Zn2+) deficiency is prominent and has gained extensive scientific interest over the past few years. Zn2+ supports numerous proteins, including enzymes and transcription factors, and controls neurogenesis and cell differentiation. It modulates synaptic transmission and plasticity by binding to

The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health concern, with macrolide resistance emerging as a significant challenge due to the widespread use of these antibiotics in both clinical and non-clinical settings. While traditionally associated with healthcare environments, increasing evidence highlights the environment as a critical reservoir and dissemination pathway for macrolide resistance genes (MRGs). Environmental sources such as wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), agricultural runoff from livestock treated with macrolides, aquaculture effluents, and pharmaceutical ma

Peptide-drug conjugates (PDCs) have emerged as a promising class of targeted therapeutics with substantial pharmaceutical advantages and market potentials, which is a combination of a peptide (selective to the disease-relevant target), a linker (stable in circulation but cleavable at target site) and a cytotoxic/radioactive drug (efficacious/traceable for disease). Among existing PDCs, those based on radiopharmaceuticals (a.k.a. radioactive drugs) are valued due to their accurate imaging and targeted destruction of disease sites. It's demanded to accumulate the biological activity and pharmace
