OBJECTIVES: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a frequent comorbidity in epilepsy, particularly absence epilepsy, but the mechanistic links between these conditions remain poorly understood. We evaluated attention and seizure susceptibility in a genetically tractable mouse model carrying heterozygous and homozygous mutations in Cacng2, a gene encoding an AMPA receptor-associated membrane protein implicated in both epilepsy and deficits in sustained attention.
METHODS: Mice underwent sustained attention testing using the 5-Choice Serial Reaction Time Task (5-CSRTT) and electroe

IMPORTANCE: Birth by cesarean delivery is increasing globally, particularly cesarean deliveries without medical indication. Children born via cesarean delivery may have an increased risk of negative health outcomes, but the evidence for psychiatric disorders is incomplete.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between cesarean delivery and risk of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in the offspring.
DATA SOURCES: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and PsycINFO were searched from inception to December 19, 2018. Search terms included all main mental disorders in the Diagnostic an

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder in children, impacting academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial, yet current methods rely heavily on subjective assessments. This study presents a novel Wavelet-Attention deep model for objective ADHD diagnosis using electroencephalography signals. The model integrates a wavelet transform for feature extraction with a deep residual network (ResNet) augmented by an attention mechanism to enhance focus on salient features. Rigorous preproces

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a childhood mental disorder characterized by inattention, impulsiveness and overactivity. It is also characterized by heterogeneity and ambiguity. Effective intervention is influenced by these two factors. This pervasive disorder impacts various domains of functioning, including academics, peer relations, familial relationships and self-esteem. A confounding factor is the high rate of comorbidity with diagnoses such as learning disabilities, oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder. No one intervention has emerged as maxim

Experimental studies have demonstrated that methylphenidate (MPH) modulates the synaptic vesicle trafficking and synaptotagmin-1 (SytI) mRNA levels. SytI is a regulatory protein of the SNARE complex, a neurotransmitter exocytosis mediator. Despite this evidence, most SNARE complex-related genes have never been evaluated in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) pharmacogenetics. This study evaluates, for we believe the first time, polymorphisms on the SNARE complex-related genes STX1A (rs2228607), VAMP2 (26bp Ins/Del) and SYT1 (rs1880867 and rs2251214) on the response to immediate-rel

The overall objective of this study was to determine whether smoking during pregnancy is related to psychiatric disorders in 4-year-olds while controlling for a wide range of potential confounding variables (i.e. parental anxiety, depression, personality disorders, drug abuse, and socio-economic characteristics). Parents of a community sample of 4-year-olds (N = 995) residing in the city of Trondheim, Norway were interviewed using the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment, which includes information on prenatal smoking. After adjusting for potential confounding variables using the propensity sc

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a high heritability rate mental disorder. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring of individuals with BD may manifest as a prodromal stage of BD and have distinct neuroimaging features compared to typical ADHD.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional involving 101 medication-naive participants aged 8 to 15 years dividing into three groups: BD offspring with ADHD (n = 21), non-BD offspring with ADHD (n = 36), and healthy controls (n = 44). Voxel-based morphometry and Surface-based morphometry methods were used to calculated gray matter

A sense of humor has been linked to social competence, popularity, and adaptability. The purpose of this review was to investigate the extant research in humor in childhood. Emerging work on the neuroanatomy of humor was discussed with findings of right hemispheric involvement for the comprehension and appreciation of humor for the affective network and the left hemisphere for cognitive understanding. These findings are intriguing when examining humor functioning in children with various disabilities, particularly the right hemisphere for children with autistic spectrum disorders or nonverbal

AIMS: Although the relationship between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and transport accidents has been shown, there is limited information on the relationship between medication and dose-response effects and transport accident risk. This study aims to determine whether young people with ADHD, including adolescents, are more prone to transport accidents than those without, and the extent to which methylphenidate (MPH) prescription in these patients reduces the risk.
METHODS: We identified 114 486 patients diagnosed with ADHD from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Da

BACKGROUND: Several copy number variants (CNVs) are associated with a high risk of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders (referred to as ND-CNVs). We aimed to characterise the effect of ND-CNVs on childhood development and investigate whether different ND-CNVs lead to distinct and specific patterns of cognitive and behavioural outcomes.
METHODS: In this case-control study, we used data from the Intellectual Disability and Mental Health: Assessing the Genomic Impact on Neurodevelopment (IMAGINE-ID) study. Children aged 4 years and older with pathogenic CNV or single nucleotide variants

The course of HIV/AIDS in children has been transformed from an acute to a chronic one with the advent of Anti-Retroviral Therapy. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and pattern of psychiatric morbidity in HIV-infected children and adolescents between 6 and 18 years of age and the relationship between their socio-demographic factors, immune suppression and psychiatric morbidity. The study was conducted at a paediatric HIV clinic in Nairobi, between February and April 2010. One hundred and sixty-two HIV-infected children and adolescents aged between 6 and 18 years and their g

BACKGROUND: ICD-10 and DSM-IV include similar criterial symptom lists for conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), but while DSM-IV treats each list separately, ICD-10 considers them jointly. One consequence is that ICD-10 identifies a group of children with ODD subtype who do not receive a diagnosis under DSM-IV.
METHODS: We examined the characteristics of this group of children using the Great Smoky Mountains Study of children in the community aged 9-16. This study provided child and parent reports of symptoms and psychosocial impairment assessed with standardised diag

Disruption of the brain serotoninergic (5-HT) system during development induces long-lasting changes in molecular profile, cytoarchitecture, and function of neurons, impacting behavioral regulation throughout life. In male and female rats, we investigate the effect of neonatal tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) inhibition by using para-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA) on the expression of 5-HTergic system components and neuropeptides related to adolescent social play behavior regulation. We observed sex-dependent 5-HT levels decrease after pCPA-treatment in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) at 17 and 35 days

Dopamine is essential to many functions like reward, motivation, and attention; when its neural pathways do not function properly, various disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression, hyperactivity, compulsions) can arise. Truncated-DAT rats display persistent stereotypies and aggressiveness; hence they are a new valuable animal model to study the pathogenesis of these disorders. The focus of research is often on the individual epigenetic determinants and much less on the impact of social experiences. Here, we investigate the developmental impact of the social environment on adolescent wild type (WT)

This study examines the course of intelligence in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and factors influencing changes. In this cross-sectional and longitudinal study, 397 children were assessed at ages 3, 6, 11, and 15 years using a neuropsychological test battery. Comparisons of demographics and scores were conducted across and within cross-sectional and longitudinal groups. Cross-sectionally, 15-year-olds outperformed 11-year-olds on Performance IQ (PIQ). A reduced PIQ at age 11 years was found that appeared to recover by age 15 years in the longitudinal group. The mother's level of

The developmental disorders of childhood autistic, developmental language, reading (dyslexia), and attention deficit-hyperactivity disorders-manifest with deficits in the traditional behavioral domains of cognition, language, visual-spatial function, attention, and socialization. However, none of these disorders has been associated with characteristic discrete focal lesions or recognized encephaloclastic processes. Developmental cognitive neuroscientists must therefore begin with the spectrum of sometimes divergent behaviors occurring within these disorders and work backward in an attempt to i

BACKGROUND: Previous findings in referred samples documented significant diagnostic specificity in patterns of transmission between parents with panic disorder (PD) and parents with major depression (MD) and their offspring. This study evaluated whether these patterns of transmission between parents and high-risk offspring are moderated by referral bias.
METHODS: Parental PD/agoraphobia (AG) and parental MD were used to predict rates of offspring psychiatric disorders and functional outcomes using data from an opportunistic sample of parents (n = 991) and offspring (n = 734) ascertained from
