Bridging the gap between temporomandibular disorders, static balance impairment and cervicogenic dizziness: Posturographic and clinical outcomes.

Several studies have investigated the possible influence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) on body posture and whether cervical spine disorders, such as cervicogenic dizziness (CGD) could play an additional role in affecting static balance. The purpose of this study was to analyze static postural behavior by means of static posturography, in patients affected by either TMD or CGD alone or by both conditions, and to compare findings with a group of healthy subjects. Significant changes in posturographic parameters were found among the three groups of patients and when compared with controls.

The diagnostic quandary of magnetic resonance imaging-negative Hirayama disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features are typical findings in Hirayama disease (HD) and are useful diagnostic entities but may not be present in all patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 22-year-old Nepalese man who presented with insidious onset of weakness of his right upper limb of more than 5 years duration. His weakness was progressive for the first 3 years, and then remained static. On examination, weakness of the interossei, thenar, hypothenar, flexor, and extensor muscles were present in his right upper limb, power was normal in his left upper and bilat

Short-term posterior C1-C2 pedicle screw fixation without fusion to treat type II odontoid fracture among people under 60 years.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior C1-C2 pedicle screw fixation is a reliable technique used in treatment of type II odontoid fracture. However, the loss of cervical range of rotation motion (RORM) was inevitable. There were few studies focusing on the influence of short-term C1-C2 fixation with nonfusion technique to preserve cervical function in patients younger than 60 years. The purpose of this study was to compare cervical RORM which was measured by an improved goniometer, and the clinical outcomes between short-term and long-term C1-C2 fixation techniques in the treatment of Grauer type 2B and 2C o

Craniocervical junction involvement in musculoskeletal diseases: an area of close collaboration between rheumatologists and radiologists.

The involvement of the cervical spine in musculoskeletal diseases can be crucial in terms of prognosis and morbidity. Early diagnosis of possible involvement of the craniocervical junction is essential to avoid the onset of neurological complications with poor prognosis. Among inflammatory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis affects the cervical spine frequently (in about 25% of patients). Atlantoaxial inflammatory changes are also detectable in spondyloarthritis. The involvement of the cervical spine in diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis is recognized as the cause of various clinical manifes

Vague neck pain following a gastrointestinal procedure: a rare case presentation of vertebral osteomyelitis and cervical epidural abscess.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO), spondylodiscitis, and spinal epidural abscesses (SEA) are infectious and inflammatory processes impacting the spine that cause major morbidity and mortality. They require prolonged hospital stays with expensive treatment regimens. Along with acute management, studies have provided evidence highlighting poor long-term outcomes. VO accounts for ~2% of all osteomyelitis. Recent data have illustrated an increase in incidence to 5.4 per 100,000 person years. The majority of patients that present with SEA and VO typically have some combination of back pain

Viscoelastic cervical total disc replacement devices: Design concepts.

Cervical disc replacement (CDR) is a motion-preserving surgical procedure for treating patients with degenerative disorders. Numerous reports of first generation CDR "ball-and-socket" articulating devices have shown satisfactory clinical results. As a result, CDR devices have been safely implemented in the surgeon's armamentarium on a global scale. However, only minor design improvements have been made over the last few years, as first generation CDRs devices were based on traditional synovial joint arthroplasty designs. As a consequence, these articulating designs have limited resemblance to

Facial Numbness and Paresthesias Resolved with Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion: A Report of 3 Cases.

CASE: We report 3 patients with classic trigeminal neuropathy (TN) findings, which were due to compressive cervical radiculopathy, and provide a brief anatomic explanation for this association. In each case, left-sided disk herniation between the C5 and C7 levels caused TN and classic (dermatome appropriate) cervical radicular findings, all of which resolved with anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF). CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, this is the first report of TN caused by radicular compression in the caudal subaxial (C5-C7) cervical spine, which resolved after ACDF.
