BACKGROUND: Cercarial dermatitis' or swimmer's itch' is an itchy inflammatory response to the penetration of the skin by non-human schistosome parasites. In the hot season, (May to September) in Khuzestan province in the south west of Iran, swimming in canals and agriculture activities in swampy areas are common. Atopic dermatitis (AD) in childhood is a common disease with prevalence rates as high as 20%. Its early onset in infancy and its chronic relapsing course puts a special burden on families. Supporting parents in dealing with the management of AD presents a challenge for physicians. Palmar petechiae or purpura is an unusual finding in dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) that occurs in children but is only rarely reported in adults. We describe a 46-year-old man with DH who presented with the classic pruritic papulovesicular eruption and associated volar finger and palmar petechiae. We discuss recent advances in the pathogenesis and treatment of DH.

Subsequently, there has been little published on the incidence of allergic reactions to chemicals in laundry detergents. Nonetheless, consumers and physicians continue to ascribe allergic contact reactions to laundry detergents.

The aim of this study was to evaluate disperse dye sensitization in patients with hand dermatitis. From January 1996 to December 2000, we identified 130 patients with hand dermatitis reacting to one of the 7 dyes included in our standard series. In 82 subjects the dermatitis was localized to the hands alone, whereas 48 patients had lesions both on the hands and on other skin sites. Many patients who present for evaluation of allergic contact dermatitis have an atopic diathesis. Plaster of Paris (POP) bandages are extensively used for splinting and casting injured or surgically repaired body parts. Trichophyton rubrum has been implicated as a potential trigger in flares of atopic dermatitis. We describe a patient with atopic dermatitis who presented with a history of multiple flares and concurrent acute tinea pedis and onychomycosis. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis and culture-positive acute infection with T. rubrum resolved during each flare using systemic antifungals. Flares of atopic dermatitis may be triggered by acute T. rubrum infections. Antifungal therapy should be considered in these patients.
