Shedding-weighted network approaches for understanding tuberculosis maintenance in multihost systems using camera traps.

Understanding the dynamics of multihost pathogens, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC), requires considering not only host interaction patterns but also variation in infectiousness across species. Network analysis is a useful tool to assess contact structure and disease risk, but it often depends on invasive methods. Camera trapping offers a noninvasive alternative to build co-occurrence networks in complex communities. In this study, we applied a novel approach that integrates shedding into ecological networks, weighing links between species pairs according to their co-occurrence

Reliance on topographical coding alone may overestimate survival in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: In epidemiological and outcomes research, "pancreatic cancer" is frequently used interchangeably with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), the most common and most lethal pancreatic cancer subtype. However, relying solely on an anatomic site code may capture a mix of pancreatic tumor types with better prognoses than PDAC, leading to inflated survival estimates. METHODS: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry to compare data derived from site-only case ascertainment (C25.x, excluding C25.4) versus histologically confirmed PDAC using ICD-O-3 morp

Sources of Salmonella infection in pigs in the Netherlands: Epidemiological risk factors and subtyping-based source attribution.

Effective Salmonella control in pigs requires understanding how the pathogen is introduced and spreads on farms. This study aimed to identify potential sources of Salmonella infection in pigs using both epidemiological and microbiological methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 148 fattening pig farms in the Netherlands. Porcine fecal samples were collected and tested for the presence of Salmonella, and a questionnaire on farm characteristics was completed. Risk factors significantly associated with Salmonella presence at farm-level were identified through logistic regression analysi

Global prevalence and distribution of bla-harboring Salmonella: A genome-wide association study of cephalosporin resistance mechanisms.

Given the increasing global concern over Salmonella resistance to cephalosporins, such resistance poses serious challenges to food safety and clinical treatment. This study aimed to systematically investigate the global epidemiological characteristics and genetic diversity of bla-harboring Salmonella to further elucidate the association between bla genes and cephalosporin resistance phenotypes. A total of 772,454 Salmonella isolates from the NCBI Pathogen Detection database were analyzed, among which 101,448 isolates harbored bla genes. Most isolates originated from humans, poultry, and pigs,

Disability progression in multiple sclerosis: a latent class analysis of predictors.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a heterogeneous disease with highly variable long-term outcomes. We aimed to identify patterns of disability progression and their determinants to improve individualized risk assessment and support clinical decision-making. METHODS: We applied latent class trajectory modeling to Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) data from 3163 newly diagnosed relapsing-onset MS cases in the Swedish Epidemiological Investigation of MS (2005-2019). Baseline demographics, clinical, and lifestyle data were collected at diagnosis, and participants were followed through

Novel environmental contaminant 6PPD-quinone promotes malignant phenotypes in colorectal cancer cells and identifies candidate response-associated genes.

6PPD-quinone (6PPDQ), an oxidative transformation product of the widely used tire antioxidant 6PPD, is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant with bioaccumulation potential and widespread human exposure. Recent epidemiological evidence indicates a positive association between urinary 6PPDQ levels and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk; however, its biological effects on CRC-related phenotypes and associated molecular responses remain unclear. We integrated bioinformatics analysis, prognostic modeling, molecular docking and dynamics simulations, and in vitro experiments to investigate cellular and mo

Exposure to potentially toxic elements and gallbladder cancer risk: An ecological study from Bihar, India.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is an aggressive malignancy with marked geographic variation, including elevated incidence rates in parts of South Asia. However, the causes of this heterogeneity and the etiology of GBC remain largely unclear. To explore potential environmental contributors, this study examined the possible role of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in environmental co-exposure using rural Bihar, India, as a case study. We utilized geographically weighted regression coefficients derived from 8460 GBC cases. These coefficients represent locally varying associations between GBC incidence

The impact of bisphenol A and its analogs on female reproductive health.

The number of pollutants stemming from anthropogenic chemicals is increasing every year. Some of them act similarly to hormones and are referred to as endocrine-disrupting chemicals or endocrine disruptors. In this group, bisphenol A (BPA) is well characterized as a xenoestrogen and is known to affect human health. BPA is crucial to the production of plastic, a material that has revolutionized and facilitated daily life. Nevertheless, the use of BPA is currently being limited, and consequently, new BPA analogs are under development. However, both BPA and its analogs can be released into the en

Frequency of Conversation, Laughter and Other Vocalising Opportunities in Daily Life and Maximum Tongue Pressure: The Goto Longevity Study.

BACKGROUND: Staying active in daily life is believed to help maintain individuals' oral motor function and prevent oral frailty, a potential risk factor for general health. However, there is limited epidemiological evidence of this association. This study focused on vocalising frequency as an indicator of activeness in daily life. METHODS: We conducted a home-visit survey targeting residents aged ≥ 65 years in a rural community in the Goto Islands, Japan. Among 563 participants, those with missing data for the main outcome or vocalising (n = 84) were excluded. Tongue pressure was measured thr

Higher dietary glycemic index, but not glycemic load, is associated with increased risk of ulcerative colitis: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Total carbohydrate intake has been inconsistently associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) risk in previous epidemiological studies. We aimed to evaluate the effects of glycemic index and glycemic load, 2 main indicators for measuring the quality and quantity of carbohydrates, on the risk of IBD subtypes (ie, Crohn's disease [CD] and ulcerative colitis [UC]). METHODS: We included 121 148 UK Biobank participants without IBD at baseline, and collected dietary information from a validated web-based 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire. Overall dietary glycemic index

Temporal trends in surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease following introduction of biological drugs in Norway and Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: The advent of biological drugs has revolutionised management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the extent to which these novel pharmacological drugs have reduced the need for surgical treatment remains incompletely quantified. We aimed to investigate the risk of first, major surgery in IBD in a population-based, large epidemiological study. METHODS: We empanelled a cohort comprising all 85 974 patients diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 42 760 with Crohn's disease (CD) in Norway and Sweden in 1987 through 2017. We used log-rank tests to compare the cumulative pro

Helicobacter pylori and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Unraveling the Complex Interactions and Clinical Implications.

Helicobacter pylori infection has been extensively studied in relation to various gastrointestinal disorders, with emerging evidence suggesting a significant association with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Epidemiological studies consistently demonstrate an inverse relationship between H. pylori infection and IBD development, particularly Crohn's disease (CD). Meta-analyses reveal a significantly lower prevalence of H. pylori among IBD patients compared to healthy controls, supporting the hypothesis of a potential protective effect. This negative correlation appears particularly strong for

Mediterranean diet improves liver health but does not protect against azoxymethane-induced colon tumorigenesis compared to Western diet in A/J mice.

INTRODUCTION: Abundant evidence indicates that the Mediterranean (MED) diet pattern is beneficial for health, especially cardiovascular health. Epidemiological evidence indicates that the MED diet also affords protection against colorectal cancer (CRC). To date, preclinical models have only evaluated specific MED diet components and therefore, although supportive, fall short of confirming the chemoprotective capacity of this complex dietary pattern. We sought to address this gap. METHOD: A/J mice were randomized to receive Western (WRN) or MED diets differing in their fat, protein, and carboh

M14 substitutions in exanatide modulate alpha-synuclein aggregation.

Clinical and epidemiological studies suggest similarities in dysregulation of pathways in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Efficacy of several antidiabetic drugs has been tested in PD. Exenatide, a synthetic version of exendin-4, an incretin-mimetic drug, is an agonist of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP1R) and is approved for the treatment of T2DM. Exenatide can cross the blood-brain barrier and exerts neuroprotective and neurorestorative effects via GLP1R at doses similar to those used in T2DM, resulting in improved motor performance, behaviour, learning and memory i
