Previous studies in the forest area of Sierra Leone have shown that transmission of Onchocerca volvulus takes place many kilometers away from large breeding rivers and sometimes in open farmland. In this prospective study the nutritional profiles of 21 consecutive male hospital in-patients with primary dilated cardiomyopathy were evaluated in order to determine whether these profiles differed from those foodstuff consumed during on week and recording of the daily consumption of alcoholic beverages during the year preceding hospitalisation. Experiments with narrow-placed-together groups of infected and noninfected tick feedings of aviremic animals proved a new way of infection for the intact specimens through the infected saliva of infected ticks excreted in the common focus of the skin inflammation. This way of the virus transmission is proposed to be nominated as transptialonic (according to the Greek word "ptialon" or saliva). It is also recommended to check up the density of ticks on the hosts and designate it as an agglomeration index.

Eighteen women completed a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study designed to investigate the effects of isocarboxazid in the treatment of bulimia nervosa. There was a significant reduction in binge eating and vomiting during isocarboxazid treatment. Response was not influenced by either the presence or absence of current major depression or personality disorder. There were no serious adverse effects from this monoamine oxidase inhibitor therapy, although over 50% of patients elected to discontinue isocarboxazid 1 year after the study.

The transmission of Brugia pahangi from Aedes aegypti into Meriones unguiculatus was compared for four different skin surfaces (HAIRY, CLOTH, CLEAN, GREASY). Unshaven jirds reduced the feeding avidity of infective mosquitoes. The loss of larvae from infective mosquitoes was greatest when these insects fed on "exposed" skin surfaces. Significantly fewer infective larvae penetrated the host when infective mosquitoes fed on a jird through a thin layer of cloth.

Several persons from two localities in Costa Rica (San Rafael de Coronado, 1510 m and Dulce Nombre de Tres Ríos, 1445 m) were bitten by ticks, subsequently identified as Ornitohodoros (A.) Kelleyi (Argasidae), commonly associated with bats. In the attics of their homes, live adults, larvae, nymphs and skins were found in the bat guano. Since there are no records of adult argasids in this country, a laboratory colony was established to observe the biology of these ticks and their association with bats. The results of titration of adult virus infected ticks of Ixodes persulcatus are given. The ticks were collected in various natural nidi of tick-borne encephalitis and individually fed on laboratory animals. The results of titration of ticks of the same species primarily infected on laboratory animals during virusemia are given as well. Changes of the virus titer in engorged ticks were observed till the egg production. A role of the presence of virus in engorged ticks for the process of the agent circulation in natural nidi is discussed.
