Altered functional connectivity of cerebellar subregions in male patients with obstructive sleep apnea: A resting-state fMRI study.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have demonstrated impaired cerebellar function in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is associated with impaired cognition. However, the effects of OSA on resting-state functional connectivity (FC) in the cerebellum has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to investigate resting-state FC of the cerebellar subregions and its relevance to clinical symptoms in patients with OSA. METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with OSA and seventy-two healthy controls (HCs) were included in the study. Eight subregions of the cerebellum were selected as region

Characterization of Neuropsychological Outcomes in a Cohort of Pediatric Patients with Moyamoya Arteriopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Moyamoya arteriopathy is a severe, progressive cerebral arteriopathy that places affected children at high risk for stroke. Moyamoya has been associated with a range of neuropsychological deficits in adults, but data on many cognitive domains remain limited in the pediatric population and little is known about the neuropsychological profile of children with syndromic moyamoya. METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective cohort study of children with moyamoya arteriopathy followed at our center who underwent neuropsychological testing between 2003 and 2021. Test scores were e

Continuous theta burst TMS of area MT+ impairs attentive motion tracking.

Attentive motion tracking deficits measured using multiple object tracking (MOT) tasks have been identified in a number of neurodevelopmental disorders such as amblyopia and autism. These deficits are often attributed to the abnormal development of high-level attentional networks. However, neuroimaging evidence from amblyopia suggests that reduced MOT performance can be explained by impaired function in motion-sensitive area MT+ alone. To test the hypothesis that a subtle disruption of MT+ function could cause MOT impairment, we assessed whether continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) of MT+

Memory Impairment and Hippocampal Volume after Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.

OBJECTIVE: We report longitudinal changes in neuroimaging and neuropsychological measurements in a case of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning showing reversible changes in hippocampal volume, which was closely linked to the degree of memory impairment. METHODS: The current study presents a female in her early 20s, with a high school level of education. She became aware of headaches and drowsiness while working in a restaurant that operated charcoal braziers, and she was urgently transported to our hospital. Her high blood carboxyhemoglobin concentration led to a diagnosis of CO poisoning, but no

Effect of ethanol and cocaine on [11C]MPC-6827 uptake in SH-SY5Y cells.

Microtubules (MTs) are structural units in the cytoskeleton. In brain cells they are responsible for axonal transport, information processing, and signaling mechanisms. Proper function of these processes is critical for healthy brain functions. Alcohol and substance use disorders (AUD/SUDs) affects the function and organization of MTs in the brain, making them a potential neuroimaging marker to study the resulting impairment of overall neurobehavioral and cognitive processes. Our lab reported the first brain-penetrant MT-tracking Positron Emission Tomography (PET) ligand [11C]MPC-6827 and demo

Are arachnoid cysts actually clinically mute in relation to neuropsychological symptoms? Cognitive functioning in children with AC of middle and cranial fossa.

Aiming at being part of the discussion about the cognitive functioning of patients with arachnoid cysts (AC) and the value of neuropsychological testing in these patients, we present our study in which we investigated the cognitive functioning of 32 children with ACs of the middle cranial fossa. We compared the Stanford Binet 5 (SB 5) results obtained by the patients with the population mean values and analysed the relation between the patients' clinical details and the results of SB 5. The main conclusions of this research are: (1) In SB 5 tasks, the tested group performed worse than the popu

English spoken word segmentation activates the prefrontal cortex and temporo-parietal junction in Chinese ESL learners: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study.

A direct measure of spoken lexical processing based on neuroimaging technology would provide us useful information to understand the neural mechanisms underlying speech or auditory language processing. The neural mechanisms of spoken word segmentation for English as a second language (ESL) learners remain elusive. The present study, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), addresses this issue by measuring hemodynamic responses in the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) and the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in a word-spotting task, designed with two task conditions (easy vs. difficult). Perceptual Mechanisms of Visual Hallucinations and Illusions in Psychosis.

Psychosis has been associated with neural anomalies across a number of brain regions and cortical networks. Nevertheless, the exact pathophysiology of the disorder remains unclear. Aberrant visual perceptions such as hallucinations are evident in psychosis, while the occurrence of visual distortions is elevated in individuals with genetic liability for psychosis. The overall goals of this project are to: (1) use psychophysical tasks and neuroimaging to characterize deficits in visual perception; (2) acquire a mechanistic understanding of these deficits through development and validation of a c

Reliability of Preoperative Prediction of the Location of the Facial Nerve Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging-Fiber Tracking in Vestibular Schwannoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The popularization and application of microscopy, the in-depth study of the microanatomy of the cerebellopontine angle, and the application of intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring technology to preserve facial nerve function have laid a solid foundation for the modern era of neurosurgery. The preoperative prediction of the location of the facial nerve is a long-desired goal of neurosurgeons. The advances in neuroimaging seem to be making this goal a reality. Many studies investigating the reliability of the preoperative prediction of the location of the facial nerve using diffusion t

Exercise-Related Changes of Networks in Aging and Mild Cognitive Impairment Brain.

Aging and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are accompanied by decline of cognitive functions. Meanwhile, the most common form of dementia is Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is characterized by loss of memory and other intellectual abilities serious to make difficulties for patients in their daily life. MCI is a transition period between normal aging and dementia, which has been used for early detection of emerging dementia. It converts to dementia with an annual rate of 5-15% as compared to normal aging with 1% rate. Small decreases in the conversion rate of MCI to AD might significantly reduce

The impact of stress on the structure of the adolescent brain: Implications for adolescent mental health.

Adolescent development is associated with major changes in emotional and cognitive functions, as well as a rise in stress-related psychological disorders such as anxiety and depression. It is also a time of significant maturation of the brain, marked by structural alterations in many limbic and cortical regions. Though many elegant human neuroimaging studies have described the adolescent-related changes in these regions, relatively little is known about these changes in non-human animals. Moreover, both human and non-human data are lacking on how exposure to chronic stress may disrupt this str

A framework to explore the visual brain in glaucoma with lessons from models and man.

Vision loss in glaucoma is associated with death of retinal ganglion cells. High intraocular pressure is a major risk factor for vision loss from glaucoma, and lowering eye pressure is the goal of all available medical and surgical treatments. Taking a bold step forward, the restoration of vision after severe glaucoma damage is a new Audacious Goal established by National Eye Institute (Sieving, 2012). This means that retinal ganglion cell repair, and replacement, must be considered in the context of visual function restoration. To restore visual function, retinal ganglion cells, after long-di

Cognitive impairment and cardiovascular disease: so near, so far.

In the spectrum of cognitive impairment, ranging from "pure" vascular dementia to Alzheimer's disease (AD), clinical interest has recently expanded from the brain to also include the vessels, shifting the pathophysiological focus from the leaves of synaptic dysfunction to the sap of cerebral microcirculation and the roots of cardiovascular function. From a diagnostic viewpoint, a thorough clinical evaluation of individuals presenting cognitive impairment might systematically include the assessment of the major cardiovascular rings of the chain linking regional perfusion to brain function: 1) l

Longitudinal change in neuropsychological performance using latent growth models: a study of mild cognitive impairment.

The goal of the current study was to examine cognitive change in both healthy controls (n = 229) and individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (n = 397) from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). We applied latent growth modeling to examine baseline and longitudinal change over 36 months in five cognitive factors derived from the ADNI neuropsychological test battery (memory, executive function/processing speed, language, attention and visuospatial). At baseline, MCI patients demonstrated lower performance on all of the five cognitive factors when compared to controls.

Vascular burden and Alzheimer disease pathologic progression.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the vascular contribution to longitudinal changes in Alzheimer disease (AD) biomarkers. METHODS: The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative is a clinic based, longitudinal study with CSF, PET, and MRI biomarkers repeatedly measured in participants with normal cognition (NC), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and mild AD. Participants with severe cerebrovascular risks were excluded. Cardiovascular risk scores and MRI white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) were treated as surrogate markers for vascular burden. Generalized estimating equations were applied, and both v

[Autism, epilepsy and temporal lobe pathology].

INTRODUCTION: The social, language, and behavioral problems that occur with autism suggest that the syndrome affects a functionally diverse and widely distributed set of neural systems. The temporal lobe is an important part of the social brain, and manifests morphological and functional alterations in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). AIM. To describe the relationship between autism, epilepsy and temporal lobe dysfunction. DEVELOPMENT: Psychopathology is common in children with temporal lobe epilepsy, with over-representation of ASD and unusual disruptive behaviour disorders. Behaviors associ

Multi-chemical networking profile of the living human brain: potential relevance to molecular studies of cognition and behavior in normal and diseased brain.

Anatomical, electrophysiological and functional neuroimaging studies show that the human brain is a complex network, where cortico-cortical and thalamo-cortical connections are organized in a specific pattern giving rise to brain function. In our recent studies we found that chemical connectivity between brain regions might be changed in different conditions (e.g. aging, chronic pain, cognitive interference). The elucidation of properties of the human brain multi-chemical networking profile is the subject of this study. In vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to determine relat…

Multimodal Ageing Biomarkers and Plasma Proteomic Signatures Associated With All-Cause Mortality.

Ageing biomarkers quantify molecular, physiological or functional features that vary between individuals as they age and may improve prediction of health outcomes beyond chronological age. Recently, plasma proteomics have been used to estimate the biological ages of 11 human organs. Although accelerated organ ageing is associated with higher mortality risk, systematic benchmarking against established ageing biomarkers is lacking. Here, we pursued two complementary aims. First, we benchmarked proteomic organ clocks against multimodal ageing biomarkers for associations with 16-year all-cause mor
