Germ cell neoplasia detected at the preinvasive stage of carcinoma-in-situ (CIS) can be cured by orchidectomy or by localized irradiation of the testis. Therefore, screening for carcinoma-in-situ of the testis has been applied to groups of individuals known to have an increased risk of testicular cancer. A high (5.5%) incidence of CIS was found in the contralateral testis of men with a unilateral cancer of the testis. Seven cases of endodermal sinus tumor (yolk sac tumor) primary in the anterior mediastinum are added to the literature bringing to 21 the number of reported cases. This germ cell tumor should be included in the differential diagnosis of anterior mediastinal tumors. It has occurred in males 13--49 years old who are often systemically ill. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) in adults may be idiopathic or secondary to various conditions. Recent studies identified germline hepatitis A virus-cellular receptor 2 (HAVCR2) mutations in subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) with HLH. The roles of this mutation in HLH, especially in idiopathic group, have never been explored. BACKGROUND: Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (PACC) is a rare tumor. Up to 45% of PACCs have alterations in the DNA damage repair pathway and 23% harbor rearrangements in the BRAF or RAF1 genes. We present a PACC case with a germline BRCA2 likely pathogenic variant (LPV) to highlight the impact of genomic testing on treatment decisions and patient outcomes. Human fibroblasts were isolated from foreskin of a clinically diagnosed 40-year old patient with idiopathic infertility. Hematopoietic SCT (HSCT) has become a curative therapeutic strategy for several malignant and nonmalignant diseases. We report the comprehensive results of the first 10 years of experience in HSCT from the two major BMT units in Lebanon: Makassed University Hospital and the American University of Beirut Medical Center. The shape and mechanical properties of human red cells were modified in several ways and the consequences for the efficiency of invasion by Plasmodium falciparum in culture were investigated. Inhibition of invasion by depletion of ATP was shown to be unrelated to cell shape or deformability changes. Treatment of cells with N-ethylmaleimide (NEM), which dissociates some 70% of the native spectrin tetramers into the dimer, grossly reduced deformation of the cells under shear and increased by a factor of two or more the shear elastic modulus, as measured by the micropipette aspiration technique.
