Knowledge and Attitudes of Teachers and School Professionals Toward Epilepsy: Results of an Educational Program in Greece.

BACKGROUND: The prejudices that accompany epilepsy in the school environment have negative consequences in the lives of children with epilepsy, such as stigmatization and marginalization. Many studies worldwide highlight that a significant percentage of teachers do not have the necessary knowledge about epilepsy and do not know what to do during an epileptic seizure. For this reason, the existence of educational programs for epilepsy among schoolteachers is suggested by these studies as a way forward. This urgent need to educate teachers about epilepsy has led several studies to focus on the p

Acceptability and outcomes of foreskin preservation for phimosis: An Indian perspective.

AIM: Understanding the Indian perspective, effectiveness, and acceptability of prepuce conservation in children with phimosis. Circumcision is performed and recommended far too often for nonphysiological phimosis. Will a less radical approach be acceptable in the subcontinent? METHOD: A two-arm study with the first arm as KAP (knowledge, attitude, and practice) study (n = 502). The second arm recruited deserving boys (n = 47) with symptomatic phimosis (see inclusion criteria). Betamethasone ointment was applied twice daily over the foreskin and gently massaged to stretch the phimotic band. Th

Dengue vaccination Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices among healthcare providers in selected countries from Latin America and Asia Pacific.

Healthcare professionals (HCPs) perform an essential role in facilitating dengue vaccine uptake, as they are trusted sources of vaccine information and their perspectives shape both patient acceptance and peer adoption. This study assessed HCPs' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) regarding dengue vaccination, and identified factors influencing their likelihood to recommend the vaccine to patients ('recommendation') and to encourage colleagues to do the same ('advocacy'). A cross-sectional survey of 815 HCPs in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand was conducted.

Developing an HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Toolkit for Adolescent and Young Adults: Serving Primary Care Providers to Support Future Implementation Using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective HIV prevention strategy for adolescents and young adults (AYAs, ages 14-26). PrEP uptake among AYAs remains low. Barriers to uptake include provider discomfort discussing sexuality, challenges engaging parents in sexual health conversations, and low perceived HIV risk. To address these gaps, we aimed to develop a toolkit to enhance AYA-serving primary care providers' (PCPs) comfort and confidence in discussing and prescribing PrEP. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research informed our approach. Four focus groups with youth-serving P

Exploring patients' and healthcare providers' knowledge and perceptions of benefits, challenges, and resource requirements in integrating telemedicine services into routine HIV care in western Kenya.

Telemedicine offers a patient-centered approach to chronic care, including HIV. However, its uptake depends on the users' perceptions of its benefits and challenges. We explored patients' and providers' knowledge, perceptions, benefits, challenges, and resource needs for integrating telemedicine into routine HIV care. We conducted a qualitative study involving eight gender-stratified focus group discussions and 23 key informant interviews with people with HIV (PWH) and their healthcare providers (HCPs) recruited from four government facilities. Transcripts were coded and analyzed using framewo

Use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among urban Canadian gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men: a cross-sectional analysis of the Engage cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) are disproportionately affected by HIV. Our objective was to describe access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and identify factors associated with not using PrEP among self-reported HIV-negative or HIV-unknown GBM. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional analysis of the Engage study cohort. Between 2017 and 2019, sexually active GBM aged 16 years or more in Montréal, Toronto and Vancouver were recruited via respondent-driven sampling (RDS). Participation included testing for HIV and sexually transmitted and blood

Ageism and the abuse of older people in health and social care.

Ageing is a natural process and yet ageism, ageist practice and abuse of older people occur among not only the general public but also in health and social care settings. Recent media reports have highlighted delays in meeting the needs of older people, physical and psychological abuse and that decisions are being made about whether or not to resuscitate an older patient without consultation with the patient and his/her family (e.g. British Journal of Nursing, 2000). This article looks at ageism and the abuse of older people and discusses what can be done to achieve quality care for older peop

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding coccidioidomycosis among healthcare providers in four counties in Washington State, 2017.

Coccidioidomycosis is an emerging infection in Washington State. The epidemiology of the disease in Washington is poorly understood at present; underrecognition and underreporting of coccidioidomycosis is suspected based on reports of only severe disease. We sought to characterize healthcare provider knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding coccidioidomycosis awareness, diagnosis, and treatment in south-central Washington. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of actively practicing healthcare providers in four counties in south-central Washington, an area recently described as endemic fo

Prevention of breastfeeding tragedies.

Although successful breastfeeding confers compelling advantages to infants and mothers, inadequate breastfeeding can result in critical infant failure-to-thrive and hypernatremic dehydration. Potential catastrophic infant outcomes can occur when enthusiastic promotion of breastfeeding outpaces necessary support services and management. Such cases often involve underlying maternal and infant breastfeeding risk factors, made deadly by parental and professional misconceptions and knowledge deficits or health care system failures. An early follow-up visit a few days after discharge allows at-risk

Breast cancer screening in older women: practices and barriers reported by primary care physicians.

Annual mammography, in combination with clinical breast examinations, can reduce mortality from breast cancer. However, surveys of both patients and physicians suggest that mammography is underutilized. This study examined whether physicians' reported breast cancer screening practices and barriers to mammography varied with patients' age. Data from 576 primary care physicians (internal medicine, family/general practice, and obstetrics/gynecology) who participated in a mailed statewide survey were analyzed. Physicians reported screening elderly women significantly less often than younger women,

Reporting on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of pharmacists regarding the active offer of French language health services in Ontario: A quantitative survey study.

BACKGROUND: Patient-provider language discordances can negatively affect the availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality (AAAQ) of pharmacy services as described by the AAAQ framework. With nearly 600,000 residents of Ontario identifying French as their mother tongue, the active offer (AO) of French language pharmacy services should be provided, yet little is known about pharmacists' familiarity and use of AO. METHODS: Ontario pharmacists completed an online survey measuring their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours (KAB) regarding the AO for French language services (FLS). Demog
