[STIKO Recommendation: MF59-Adjuvanted Influenza Vaccine for Individuals ≥ 60 Years of Age].

In October 2024, the Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) adjusted its recommendation on seasonal influenza vaccination for people aged 60 and over. Based on new study data, the MF59-adjuvanted influenza vaccine is now recommended as equivalent to the high-dose vaccine: The MF59-adjuvanted vaccine was shown to be superior in terms of effectiveness compared to non-adjuvanted standard vaccines in older adults. The immune response to the adjuvanted vaccine was broader and stronger than to the standard vaccine. The MF59-adjuvanted vaccine had a similar safety profile to the high-dose vaccine,

Associations Between Neuropathy, Nephropathy and Hearing Loss in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes.

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between symptomatic hearing loss (HL), neuropathy, and nephropathy in subjects with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Furthermore, the study evaluated whether HL was associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, assessed based on plasma levels of tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and explored potential sex-specific differences. Materials and Methods: We included 4245 subjects with T2DM from The Danish Centre for Strategic Research in Type 2 Diabetes cohort

Characterizing the Profile of Individuals Who Undergo Flotation-REST: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Flotation, a form of restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST), entails lying in a warm saltwater tank. Evidence links it to lower stress and improved mood, but user characteristics outside trials remain unclear. We profiled flotation users and compared health and lifestyle measures with a population benchmark. Adults were recruited from an online community forum and a flotation center in the southwestern United States. The survey included the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-15) and standardized items from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). User

Individual and Combined Effects of Bisphenol A and Lithium on the Regenerative Capacity of the Polychaete Hediste diversicolor.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and lithium (Li) are emerging contaminants widely detected in aquatic environments, yet their effects on regenerative processes remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the effects of BPA, Li, and their mixture on the regenerative capacity of the estuarine polychaete Hediste diversicolor, an important bioturbator in coastal ecosystems. Organisms were exposed for 21 days to BPA (0-135 μg/kg), Li (0-78.13 mg/kg), and BPA + Li mixtures under controlled laboratory conditions. Regeneration was assessed by determining the number of regenerated segments and the percentage of b

COVID-19 outcomes in individuals with severe alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency in Sweden.

We have previously found using questionnaire/interview data on COVID-19 outcomes, that most subjects with severe alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) exhibit mild COVID-19 infection and those who additionally have COPD are at increased risk of severe COVID-19. We used objective information on COVID-19 outcomes in severe AATD (PiZZ) from the Swedish population and compared the risk of severe COVID-19 in severe AATD to the risk of severe COVID-19 in the general population. We cross-linked the Swedish National AATD Registry with the Swedish National Patient Register to identify subjects with sev

Ideologically biased evaluation of evidence - A signal-detection approach to measure individual differences.

In a context of increasing political polarization, ideological bias poses a challenge to evidence-based reasoning and the evaluation of factual information. However, its systematic study is hindered by the lack of reliable and valid measurement tools and by the frequent conflation of ideological bias with ideological stance. Addressing this gap, we introduce the Ideological Bias Expression (IBE) scale, a novel measure grounded in signal detection theory that disentangles discrimination accuracy from ideological bias in individuals' evaluations of evidence. Across two studies using German sampl

Increased prevalence of autoantibodies neutralizing IFNλ2/3 in young individuals with cystic fibrosis.

Groen et al. identify neutralizing interferon-λ2/3 autoantibodies in 11.8% of individuals with cystic fibrosis, a greater than 10-fold higher prevalence than in control individuals. Autoantibody-containing plasmas enhanced respiratory virus replication in vitro, and associated with allergic rhinitis in patients, suggesting that interferon-λ2/3 autoantibodies have the potential to impact mucosal pathology.

Cardiovascular and Circulatory Responses to Acute Mental Stress Among Individuals With Ischemic Cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVE: We studied responses to acute mental stress in individuals with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) with and without heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). METHODS: Individuals with stable CAD ( N = 313, 45 with HFrEF) underwent a laboratory-based mental stress. HFrEF was defined as an ejection fraction of <40%. Hemodynamic reactivity and vasoconstriction during mental stress were evaluated using changes in systolic blood pressure and peripheral arterial tonometry, respectively. Immune function was assessed by measuring changes in interleukin-6 (IL-6) and circulatin

Effect of visual cues on gait and muscle coactivation asymmetry in individuals with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit pronounced gait asymmetry and elevated lower-limb muscle coactivation during walking. Although visual cues are known to enhance gait performance in PD, their effect on gait asymmetry and interlimb motor coordination remains unclear. AIM: Therefore, this study investigated the impact of visual cues on gait and on muscle coactivation asymmetry, as indicators of interlimb motor coordination during walking, in individuals with PD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, parallel-group study, 14 participants with idiopathic PD and 14 age-mat

Association of serum androgen levels with Framingham Cardiovascular Risk Score in individuals with obesity.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is strongly associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although traditional risk factors are incorporated into widely used cardiovascular risk scores such as the Framingham Cardiovascular Risk Score, hormonal alterations accompanying obesity, particularly changes in serum androgen levels, may also contribute to cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum androgen levels and estimated 10-year cardiovascular risk in individuals with obesity. METHODS: This retrospective study included 203 adults with obesity follow

Pilot and Feasibility Study of an Individualized Telehealth Exercise Program for People with Cystic Fibrosis.

Background: The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) recognizes exercise as a critical part of managing cystic fibrosis (CF). This becomes even more important in the era of highly effective modulator therapy (HEMT) due to many people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) having decreased symptom burden and a newfound ability to tolerate exercise better. Our single-center pilot study was designed to assess the implementation of a remotely delivered, individualized, and comprehensive exercise program for pwCF. We aimed to determine the feasibility, safety and acceptance of this intervention. Methods: PwCF ≥ 1

Individual Differences in Error-Related Brain Activity and Post-Error Slowing in Children.

Errors play a crucial role in learning and goal-directed behavior by triggering cognitive adjustments to optimize future task performance. One such adjustment is post-error slowing (PES), the tendency to respond more slowly after an error. In adults, PES has been associated with regions implicated in error processing, including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and anterior insula. The prolonged maturation of these regions is thought to contribute to less efficient error processing in children and PES compared to adults. Additionally, while some errors may be immediately corrected, resulting

Individuals With Disabilities Receiving Care From a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes for the youngest eligible patients with disabilities enrolled in a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). We hypothesized that health (as defined by validated measures of function, mood, quality of life, and community engagement) and care satisfaction (as defined by perceptions of care delivery) would improve after 1 year compared with baseline, and health care use would be similar to benchmarks from the National PACE Association. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: PACE. PARTICIPANTS: N=51 individuals with disabilities aged 56-68 years.

Assessing Left Atrial Volume Indexation to Predict Mortality in Individuals With Overweight and Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Alternative indexation methods for left atrial volume (LAV) have been proposed to achieve better proportional scaling than the current standard body surface area indexation. However, there are limited data showing that these alternative indices provide long-term prognostic value in individuals with overweight or obesity. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the performance of various LAV indexation methods in predicting all-cause mortality in individuals with overweight or obesity. METHODS: We obtained data from the National Echocardiography Database Australia with l

Lateral reactive stepping responses differ between individuals with and without transfemoral amputation.

Effective reactive stepping is critical for preventing falls. Although falls are common in individuals with transfemoral amputation (TFA), mediolateral reactive stepping responses in this population remain poorly understood. This study investigated limb-specific mediolateral reactive stepping responses in individuals with and without TFA. Seventeen individuals with TFA and seventeen healthy controls experienced lateral perturbations applied at the waist using a custom system. Step thresholds, stepping strategies, step latency, and center of pressure (CoP) metrics were compared for perturbation

Effect of tau burden and Lewy pathology on neuropsychiatric symptoms in Aβ-positive individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common across the Alzheimer's disease (AD) spectrum. We aimed to evaluate the effects of amyloid beta (Aβ), tau, and Lewy body (LB) pathologies on NPS in Aβ-positive individuals. METHODS: In 336 Aβ-positive participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative cohort, spanning from cognitively unimpaired to those with early dementia, NPS were assessed. Aβ and tau positron emission tomography were conducted. In a subgroup of 238 participants, dichotomized LB pathology was assessed by detecting α-synuclein seeding activity. The effec

Individualized machine-learning predictions of pain intensity in chronic low back pain.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) imposes a major public health burden and its presentation is further complicated by high comorbidity with depression. Processes that maintain cLBP are likely highly individualized and span biological, psychological, and social domains, posing significant challenges for optimal treatment. This proof-of-concept study applied a systematic individualized machine learning (ML) pipeline to predict individual pain intensity from intervenable biopsychosocial variables obtained from ecological momentary assessment and smartwatch wearables. Participants were six adults with

Experiences who are d/Deaf and queer individuals: a systematic review and meta-synthesis.

The current systematic review and meta-synthesis investigated the experiences of Deaf queer people, specifically, how identities in this population shift dynamically in response to their dual marginalization. Data were extracted from 27 qualitative studies, with a sample total of 176 participants. Synthesis was influenced by the Model of Multidimensional Identities to frame resulting categories and themes. Four categories were developed from the data: (1) institutional contributors to identity salience, (2) cultural moderators of institutional neglect, (3) resistance to double exclusion throug
