Association between base excess levels and clinical outcomes among very low birth weight infants: a multicenter birth cohort study in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: The impact of metabolic acidosis on short-term outcomes and mortality in very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) has not been well studied. PURPOSE: To investigate the potential association between metabolic acidosis and the clinical outcomes of VLBWIs in South Korea. METHODS: Between 2013 and 2019, data were collected from the Korean Neonatal Network, which covers a multicenter birth cohort spanning 75 hospitals. Our study cohort included 14,519 infants with a birth weight of less than 1,500 g who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. Blood gas measurements taken wit

Efficacy of pulmonary surfactant with budesonide in infants born at or less than 28 weeks' gestation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Pulmonary surfactant (PS) is the standard treatment for respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants. Budesonide, a corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties, has been studied for use with PS to potentially improve respiratory outcomes and reduce bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) risk while minimizing systemic steroid exposure. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of PS with budesonide versus PS alone in infants born ≤ 28 weeks' gestational age (GA). A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and the Cochrane Library databases from in

A single-center observational study on congenital diaphragmatic hernia: Outcome, predictors of mortality and experience from a tertiary perinatal center in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a common birth defect associated with significant mortality and morbidity. There is limited outcome data on CDH in the Southeast Asian region. Rapid accessibility to our CDH Perinatal Center, as a consequence of the small geographic size of our country and efficient land transportation system, has largely eliminated deaths of live outborn babies prior arrival at our center. We selected a study period when extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support was not available at our institution. The data will therefore be relevant in developing

Cerebral oxygen saturation and autoregulation during hypotension in extremely preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: The impact of the permissive hypotension approach in clinically well infants on regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rScO2) and autoregulatory capacity (CAR) remains unknown. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of blinded rScO2 measurements within a randomized controlled trial of management of hypotension (HIP trial) in extremely preterm infants. rScO2, mean arterial blood pressure, duration of cerebral hypoxia, and transfer function (TF) gain inversely proportional to CAR, were compared between hypotensive infants randomized to receive dopamine or placebo and between hypotensive an

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in neonates with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia: a 26-year experience from a tertiary centre.

OBJECTIVES: Neonates with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) have a high rate of mortality. There is controversy regarding optimal time of surgical intervention. We present our data over a 26-year period. METHODS: We analysed data from our Extracorporeal Life Support Organization registry forms between 1989 and 2015, in order to determine the factors affecting survival outcome for repair of congenital diaphragmatic hernia with ECMO as a bridge to surgery and/or recovery. RESULTS: Ninety-eight neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hern

Comparison of under-five mortality for 2000, 2005 and 2011 surveys in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Though the socio-economic situation of the Ethiopian household is improving along with the decrease in under-five child mortality. But, under-five mortality is still one of the major problems. Identification of the risk factors change over time which mismatches with the diminishing rate of under-five mortality is important to address the problems. METHODS: The survey data used for this research was taken from three different Ethiopian Demographic and Health Surveys (2000, 2005 and 2011). This data was used to identify the effect of time varying under-five mortality risk factors. T

Consequences of maternal complications in women's lives in the first postpartum year: a prospective cohort study.

Maternal complications are common during and following childbirth. However, little information is available on the psychological, social and economic consequences of maternal complications on women's lives, especially in a rural setting. A prospective cohort study was conducted in southern Rajasthan, India, among rural women who had a severe or less-severe, or no complication at the time of delivery or in the immediate postpartum period. In total, 1,542 women, representing 93% of all women who delivered in the field area over a 15-month period and were examined in the first week postpartum by

Derivation and Validation of a Risk Score to Predict Mortality of Early Neonates at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: The END in NICU Score.

BACKGROUND: Early neonatal death is death of infants in the first week of life. And 34% to 92% of neonatal deaths happen within 7 days of postnatal period. Thus, the early neonatal period is the most critical time for an infant, requiring different strategies to prevent mortality. Among strategies, deriving and implementing early warning scores is crucial to predict early neonatal mortality earlier upon hospital admission. OBJECTIVE: To derive and validate a risk score to predict mortality of early neonates at Felege Hiwot Specialized Hospital neonatal intensive care unit, Bahir Dar, 2021. M
