Towards Connectivity-Aware Pulmonary Airway Segmentation.

Detailed pulmonary airway segmentation is a clinically important task for endobronchial intervention and treatment of peripheral pulmonary lesions. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are promising for automated analysis of medical imaging, which however performs poorly on airway segmentation. Specifically, breakage of small bronchi distals cannot be effectively eliminated in the prediction results of CNNs, which is detrimental to use as a reference for bronchoscopic-assisted surgery. In this paper, we proposed a connectivity-aware segmentation framework to improve the performance of airway s

Estimating Outlier-Immunized Common Harmonic Waves for Brain Network Analyses on the Stiefel Manifold.

Since brain network organization is essentially governed by the harmonic waves derived from the Eigen-system of the underlying Laplacian matrix, discovering the harmonic-based alterations provides a new window to understand the pathogenic mechanism of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in a unified reference space. However, current reference (common harmonic waves) estimation studies over the individual harmonic waves are often sensitive to outliers, which are obtained by averaging the heterogenous individual brain networks. To address this challenge, we propose a novel manifold learning approach to ide

Using artificial intelligence to identify patients with migraine and associated symptoms and conditions within electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Real-world evidence (RWE)-based on information obtained from sources such as electronic health records (EHRs), claims and billing databases, product and disease registries, and personal devices and health applications-is increasingly used to support healthcare decision making. There is variability in the collection of EHR data, which includes "structured data" in predefined fields (e.g., problem list, open claims, medication list, etc.) and "unstructured data" as free text or narrative. Healthcare providers are likely to provide more complete information as free text, but extractin

Application of a practice-based approach in variable selection for a prediction model development study of hospital-induced delirium.

BACKGROUND: Prognostic models of hospital-induced delirium, that include potential predisposing and precipitating factors, may be used to identify vulnerable patients and inform the implementation of tailored preventive interventions. It is recommended that, in prediction model development studies, candidate predictors are selected on the basis of existing knowledge, including knowledge from clinical practice. The purpose of this article is to describe the process of identifying and operationalizing candidate predictors of hospital-induced delirium for application in a prediction model develop

A Deep Learning Model for Automatic Segmentation of Intraparenchymal and Intraventricular Hemorrhage for Catheter Puncture Path Planning.

Intracerebral hemorrhage is the subtype of stroke with the highest mortality rate, especially when it also causes secondary intraventricular hemorrhage. The optimal surgical option for intracerebral hemorrhage remains one of the most controversial areas of neurosurgery. We aim to develop a deep learning model for the automatic segmentation of intraparenchymal and intraventricular hemorrhage for clinical catheter puncture path planning. First, we develop a 3D U-Net embedded with a multi-scale boundary aware module and a consistency loss for segmenting two types of hematoma in computed tomograph

An ontology-based approach for harmonization and cross-cohort query of Alzheimer's disease data resources.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) are two major data sharing resources for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) research. NACC and ADNI strive to make their data more FAIR (findable, interoperable, accessible and reusable) for the broader research community. However, there is limited work harmonizing and supporting cross-cohort interoperability of the two resources. METHOD: In this paper, we leverage an ontology-based approach to harmonize data elements in the two resources and develop a web-bas

Boundary-Guided and Region-Aware Network With Global Scale-Adaptive for Accurate Segmentation of Breast Tumors in Ultrasound Images.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) image segmentation is a critical procedure in the diagnosis and quantitative analysis of breast cancer. Most existing methods for BUS image segmentation do not effectively utilize the prior information extracted from the images. In addition, breast tumors have very blurred boundaries, various sizes and irregular shapes, and the images have a lot of noise. Thus, tumor segmentation remains a challenge. In this article, we propose a BUS image segmentation method using a boundary-guided and region-aware network with global scale-adaptive (BGRA-GSA). Specifically, we first d

Prognosis Forecast of Re-Irradiation for Recurrent Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Based on Deep Learning Multi-Modal Information Fusion.

Radiation therapy is the primary treatment for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, it may induce necrosis of the nasopharynx, leading to severe complications such as bleeding and headache. Therefore, forecasting necrosis of the nasopharynx and initiating timely clinical intervention has important implications for reducing complications caused by re-irradiation. This research informs clinical decision-making by making predictions on re-irradiation of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma using deep learning multi-modal information fusion between multi-sequence nuclear magnetic resonance i

Cardiac arrhythmia detection using deep learning approach and time frequency representation of ECG signals.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac arrhythmia is a cardiovascular disorder characterized by disturbances in the heartbeat caused by electrical conduction anomalies in cardiac muscle. Clinically, ECG machines are utilized to diagnose and monitor cardiac arrhythmia noninvasively. Since ECG signals are dynamic in nature and depict various complex information, visual assessment and analysis are time consuming and very difficult. Therefore, an automated system that can assist physicians in the easy detection of arrhythmia is needed. METHOD: The main objective of this study was to create an automated deep learnin

Effectiveness of evidence-based decision aids for women with pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 variants in the german health care context: results from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Women with pathogenic BRCA1 or BRCA2 variants are at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Preventive options include risk-reducing breast and ovarian surgeries and intensified breast surveillance. However, individual decision-making is often associated with decisional conflicts. Two evidence-based decision aids have recently been developed for these women (healthy or with unilateral breast cancer) for the German context to support them in their decision-making process. This study evaluated their effectiveness. METHODS: In a randomized controlled study, women (aged 18-70 years)

Exploring Contextual Relationships for Cervical Abnormal Cell Detection.

Cervical abnormal cell detection is a challenging task as the morphological discrepancies between abnormal and normal cells are usually subtle. To determine whether a cervical cell is normal or abnormal, cytopathologists always take surrounding cells as references to identify its abnormality. To mimic these behaviors, we propose to explore contextual relationships to boost the performance of cervical abnormal cell detection. Specifically, both contextual relationships between cells and cell-to-global images are exploited to enhance features of each region of interest (RoI) proposal. Accordingl

CCS-Net: Cascade Detection Network With the Convolution Kernel Switch Block and Statistics Optimal Anchors Block in Hypopharyngeal Cancer MRI.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a common diagnostic method for hypopharyngeal cancer (HPC). It is a challenge to automatically detect HPC tumors and swollen lymph nodes (HPC risk areas) from MRI slices because of the small size and irregular shape of HPC risk areas. Herein, we propose a cascade detection network with Convolution Kernel Switch (CKS) Block and Statistics Optimal Anchors (SOA) Block in HPC MRI (CCS-Net). CKS Block can adaptively switch standard convolution to deformable convolution in some appropriate layers to detect irregular objects more efficiently without taking up too m

Autonomous Swallow Segment Extraction Using Deep Learning in Neck-Sensor Vibratory Signals From Patients With Dysphagia.

Dysphagia occurs secondary to a variety of underlying etiologies and can contribute to increased risk of adverse events such as aspiration pneumonia and premature mortality. Dysphagia is primarily diagnosed and characterized by instrumental swallowing exams such as videofluoroscopic swallowing studies. videofluoroscopic swallowing studies involve the inspection of a series of radiographic images for signs of swallowing dysfunction. Though effective, videofluoroscopic swallowing studies are only available in certain clinical settings and are not always desirable or feasible for certain patients

Cross-Subject Tinnitus Diagnosis Based on Multi-Band EEG Contrastive Representation Learning.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is an important technology to explore the central nervous mechanism of tinnitus. However, it is hard to obtain consistent results in many previous studies for the high heterogeneity of tinnitus. In order to identify tinnitus and provide theoretical guidance for the diagnosis and treatment, we propose a robust, data-efficient multi-task learning framework called Multi-band EEG Contrastive Representation Learning (MECRL). In this study, we collect resting-state EEG data from 187 tinnitus patients and 80 healthy subjects to generate a high-quality large-scale EEG datase
