The Implications of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery on Psychosocial and Relational Health: A Narrative Review.

Obesity is a globally prevalent condition associated with elevated morbidity and mortality. Metabolic and bariatric surgery offers a definitive treatment for class III (BMI > 40) obesity, achieving substantial, enduring weight loss and improving metabolic health. Despite extensive research on the physical benefits, comparatively fewer reviews investigate the psychosocial and relational changes accompanying these procedures. This narrative review examines how such procedures affect partner relationship quality, sexual function, and broader social integration, aiming to synthesise current findin

The Chain Mediating Effect of Spousal Support and Dyadic Adjustment in the Association Between Social Media Addiction and Sexual Functioning Among Married Women of Reproductive Age.

The present cross-sectional study examined the chain mediating roles of spousal support and dyadic adjustment in the relationship between social media addiction and sexual functioning among 211 married women of reproductive age in Qazvin, Iran. Grounded in the Interpersonal Process Model of Intimacy, the study posited that excessive social media use displaces face-to-face interactions, thereby eroding emotional support and relational harmony, which are critical for sexual well-being. Participants completed validated measures assessing social media addiction, spousal support, dyadic adjustment,

Support Network Typology and Psychological Well-Being Among Young Adults.

The psychological well-being of young adults is a growing concern in the United States. Social networks, comprising relationships that provide various types of support, are crucial predictors of their psychological well-being. A network typology offers a pattern-centered approach to classify relational compositions into subgroups with similar patterns. Using longitudinal data from the UC Berkeley Social Networks Study (UCNets), this study identified a network typology for young adults' support networks and examined its relationship with psychological well-being across four functional support n

Friends and trends: Friendship across life phases and cohorts.

OBJECTIVE: This study describes how subjective frequency of contact with friends changes over the lifespan, whether it has increased across cohorts, and if later-born cohorts maintain this contact into older ages. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from individuals aged 15-97 collected between 1968 and 2021 were used to create an age pattern, analyse changes within age groups, and compare self-reported age trajectories of frequent contact with friends across birth cohorts. RESULTS: Reported frequency of contact with friends follows a clear age pattern: decreasing from young adulthood, plateauing

Peer-friendship Networks and Self-harm among Adolescents from Inner-city Schools: A Social Network Study.

Peer-relationships are critically important for adolescent behavior, but how peer-friendship network composition and structure influence adolescent self-harm is less clear. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the association between in-school peer-friendship networks, gender, and self-harm among inner-city adolescents. Participants were 2203 adolescents (mean age = 12.5 years, SD = 1.0; 53% girls) attending inner-city south London schools. Each adolescent nominated friends within their school year to construct sociometric peer-friendship networks and reported on lifetime self-

A Secondary Analysis of a Cross-Sectional Study to Examine Factors Associated with Marital Benefit Among U.S. Women with Infertility.

Infertility in women causes profound psychological distress and may affect the coupled relationship. Few studies have considered the strengthening of the relationship, or marital benefit, of women with infertility. This study sought to investigate factors associated with marital benefit, such as infertility-related stress, partner communication, sexual satisfaction, coping strategies, and quality of life satisfaction. We used a descriptive cross-sectional study design to recruit 197 U.S. women with infertility who were undergoing fertility treatments from infertility-related Facebook support g

Adolescent suicidal thoughts and behaviors: The independent effects of interpersonal violence.

BACKGROUND: While it is recognized that childhood interpersonal victimization is a predictor of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in adolescence, the independent effect of each form of victimization has rarely been quantified. Furthermore, research on child maltreatment has mainly neglected to investigate the effect of peer victimization, which is very prevalent in this developmental period. This study aimed to 1) determine the prevalence of suicidal thoughts behaviors in adolescents residing in the province of Quebec, Canada and 2) assess the independent effect of distinct forms of childhood in

Timelines of psychological, physical and sexual intimate partner violence among a nationally representative sample of Australian women.

BACKGROUND: Violent and abusive behavior in relationships causes immense individual and community harm. Mapping the emergence of different types of abuse over time and recognising behavioral patterns, could enable more targeted intimate partner violence (IPV) prevention, screening, and early intervention. While there has been some qualitative research into early warning signs of abuse and escalating homicide risks in relationships, no known studies have asked a large sample of survivors to document the sequence of abusive behaviors in a recent relationship. OBJECTIVES: To explore timelines of

Childhood maltreatment is linked to larger preferred interpersonal distances towards friends and strangers across the globe.

Childhood maltreatment (CM) is thought to be associated with altered responses to social stimuli and interpersonal signals. However, limited evidence exists that CM is linked to larger comfortable interpersonal distance (CID) - the physical distance humans prefer towards others during social interactions. However, no previous study has investigated this association in a comprehensive sample, yielding sufficient statistical power. Moreover, preliminary findings are limited to the European region. Finally, it is unclear how CM affects CID towards different interaction partners, and whether CID i

Interpersonal, Community, and Societal Stressors Mediate Black-White Memory Disparities.

OBJECTIVES: Structural racism creates contextual stressors that disproportionately affect Black, relative to White, older adults in the United States and may contribute to worse cognitive health. We examined the extent to which interpersonal, community, and societal stressors uniquely explain Black-White disparities in initial memory and memory change. METHODS: The sample included 14,199 non-Latino Black and White older adults (Mage = 68.32, 19.8% Black) from the U.S. Health and Retirement Study who completed psychosocial questionnaires at baseline and a word list memory task every 2 years ov

Exploring mothers' experiences of trauma and violence-informed cognitive behavioural therapy following intimate partner violence: a qualitative case analysis.

PURPOSE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health issue impacting one in three women, worldwide. Broadly defined as any act of coercive control within the context of an intimate relationship, IPV often results in significant negative health outcomes. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a mainstay treatment for relational trauma, has particular relevance for women undergoing the many transformations associated with the perinatal period. The findings of this case analysis build upon existing literature supporting the positive impact of Trauma and Violence- Informed CBT (TVICB

Couple and family therapies for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) refers to an anxiety or trauma- and stressor-related disorder that is linked to personal or vicarious exposure to traumatic events. PTSD is associated with a range of adverse individual outcomes (e.g. poor health, suicidality) and significant interpersonal problems which include difficulties in intimate and family relationships. A range of couple- and family-based treatments have been suggested as appropriate interventions for families impacted by PTSD. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this review were to: (1) assess the effects of couple and fam

Evaluation of the social phobia scale and social interaction anxiety scale as assessments of performance and interaction anxiety.

The DSM-5 classification of performance anxiety as distinct from social anxiety underlines the need for specific measurement instruments. The Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) are widely used assessments of performance and general interaction anxiety, yet few studies have examined their criterion validity using actual performance and interaction stressors. The current study is the first to assess the scales' convergent and discriminant validity using multimodal anxiety indices including psychophysiological reactivity, which is a key characterizing feature of

Autonomy level and quality of everyday experience of people with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia.

In the health domain, well-being is primarily assessed as autonomy and mental distress, whereas the quality of daily experience is rarely investigated. In this study, the relationship between autonomy levels and daily experience was explored. Thirty-five Italian adults with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia provided for one week real-time descriptions of daily activities and associated experiences through the Experience Sampling Method procedure. Participants were grouped based on autonomy levels assessed through Barthel Index. The relationships between activity typologies, the experiential dimens

A Comparison of Low-Income Versus Higher-Income Individuals Seeking an Online Relationship Intervention.

Compared to higher-income couples, low-income couples experience higher rates of relationship disruption, including divorce and breakup of cohabiting relationships. In recognition of this disparity in relationship outcomes, relationship interventions have increasingly been targeted at this population. However, these interventions have had limited impacts on the relationships of low-income couples. Developing interventions that are effective and responsive to the needs of low-income couples requires descriptive data on the challenges those couples perceive in their own relationships and an asse

Examining the link between emotional childhood abuse and social relationships in midlife: The moderating role of the oxytocin receptor gene.

BACKGROUND: A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs53576, of the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) has been associated with fundamental aspects of social processes and behaviors. Compared to A carriers, GG individuals have enhanced social competencies and tend to elicit more positive responses from social partners. However, the G allele of the OXTR rs53576 has also been associated with greater social sensitivity. OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the unique influence of emotional childhood abuse on positive and negative aspects of different types of social relationships (e.g., family, spou

Using community health workers to deliver a scalable integrated parenting program in rural China: A cluster-randomized controlled trial.

Inadequate care during early childhood can lead to long-term deficits in skill development. Parenting programs are promising tools for improving parenting practices and opportunities for healthy development. We implemented a non-masked cluster-randomized controlled trial in rural China in order to assess the effectiveness of an integrated home-visitation program that includes both psychosocial stimulation and health promotion at fostering development and health outcomes of infants and toddlers in rural China. All 6-18 month-old children of two rural townships and their main caregiver were enro

The Other Side of Medical Student Mistreatment: Teaching Cultural Competency Across the Generational Divide.

INTRODUCTION: Medical student mistreatment continues to be a significant problem despite increased awareness and longitudinal efforts to address the issue. Through audience discussions of a previously published film depicting learner mistreatment, we identified challenges created by student behaviors that negatively impact the learning environment. In addition, the need to address cultural competency in a multigenerational clinical environment became apparent. METHODS: We created a film of three vignettes based on perspectives shared in focus groups by faculty, residents, nurses, and staff wh
