Utilizing qualitative methods in survey design: examining Texas cattle producers' intent to participate in foot-and-mouth disease detection and control.

The effective control of an outbreak of a highly contagious disease such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the United States will require a strong partnership between the animal agriculture industry and the government. However, because of the diverse number of economic, social, and psychological influences affecting livestock producers, their complete cooperation during an outbreak may not be assured. We conducted interviews with 40 individuals involved in the Texas cattle industry in order to identify specific behaviors where producer participation or compliance may be reduced. Through quali

Concerns about inherited risk of breast cancer prior to diagnosis in Japanese patients with breast complaints.

The purpose of this study was to reveal characteristics that underlie patients' expressions of concern about their genetic risk of breast cancer at an initial outpatient clinic visit prior to a definitive diagnosis of cancer. A total of 233 women, at their initial outpatient clinic visits, participated in semi-structured and open-ended interviews that surveyed their anxieties, worries, thoughts, and feelings. Each patient completed a self-administered survey comprising questions about her family history of breast cancer and responded to a questionnaire that assessed psychological distress. Pat

Test-retest reliability of the PRIME-MD: limitations in diagnosing mental disorders in primary care.

BACKGROUND: The primary care evaluation of mental disorders (PRIME-MD) can be seen as characteristic for successive refinements of criteria and structured interview techniques for diagnosing psychiatric disorders in primary care. It is one of the most widely used instruments, but there is no evidence to support its test-retest reliability. METHODS: With 1-week intervals between interviews, a test-retest study of the PRIME-MD was conducted in a general practice population of 100 distressed patients (20- to 60-years old) who were on sick leave. RESULTS: Almost everyone (89%) received one or mo

Situational pressures on aviation decision making: goal seduction and situation aversion.

INTRODUCTION: The context in which a decision is made can shape the decision process in important ways. Of particular interest here are 'strong' situations, that is, contexts where the situation itself exerts an influence on decision making. Borrowing concepts from field theory and approach/avoidance theory, this paper explores the influence of strong situations on pilot decision making. METHOD: There were 28 pilots flying in Alaska who were interviewed using a critical incident technique where participants were asked to relate stories about challenging flying situations. A bottom-up qualitat

The development of multiple drug use among anabolic-androgenic steroid users: six subjective case reports.

BACKGROUND: The inappropriate use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) was originally a problem among athletes but AAS are now often used in nonsport situations and by patients attending regular addiction clinics. The aim of this study was to improve understanding of the development of multiple drug use in patients seeking treatment at an addiction clinic for AAS-related problems. METHODS: We interviewed six patients (four men and two women) with experience of AAS use who were attending an addiction clinic for what they believed were AAS-related problems. The patients were interviewed in-dep

Managing threats to self: awareness in early stage Alzheimer's disease.

Lack of awareness is described as a clinical feature of Alzheimer's disease that is observed in a significant proportion of those assigned this diagnosis. There is an extensive literature emphasising biological explanations in which unawareness is viewed essentially as a symptom, but possible psychosocial factors, together with the socially constructed nature of expressed awareness, are largely neglected. The onset of dementia may be viewed as a threat to self occasioning attempts to regain control through a range of psychological strategies, which are likely to affect the ways in which people

Anxiety Problems Experienced by Autistic Children: Child and Parent Perspectives.

Autistic people are at increased risk of psychological distress, particularly anxiety problems. Childhood anxiety problems can lead to various negative lifelong outcomes, including disrupted education and reduced quality of life. Working closely with an Expert Reference Group and co-researchers with lived experience of autism and parenting an autistic child, we explored the experience of autistic children's anxiety to inform autism-specific intervention development. We interviewed nine autistic children with anxiety problems and 10 parents. Interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenome

Decision-making experiences in gonadectomy and gonadal tissue cryopreservation for adolescents/young adults and parents of individuals with differences of sex development: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Our institution offers experimental gonadal tissue cryopreservation (GTC) at the time of prophylactic gonadectomy for malignancy risk for individuals with differences of sex development (DSD). Decisions about GTC are challenging for numerous reasons: the experimental nature of the procedure and uncertainty of future reproductive success, costs, possibility of heritability of the condition, and possible discordance between gender identity and germ cells. OBJECTIVE: In this qualitative study, we sought to examine gonadectomy and GTC decision-making experiences of parents and patient

"Chasing the pain relief, not the high": Experiences managing pain after opioid reductions among patients with HIV and a history of substance use.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdose mortality continues to increase in the United States despite significant investments to reverse the epidemic. The national response to-date has focused primarily on reducing opioid prescribing, yet reductions in prescribing have been associated with patients reporting uncontrolled pain, psychological distress, and transition to illicit substances. The aim of this study is to qualitatively explore chronic pain management experiences among PLWH with a history of illicit substance use after long-term opioid therapy reductions or discontinuations. METHODS: We analyzed

Biased attention to threat in paediatric anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, specific phobia, separation anxiety disorder) as a function of 'distress' versus 'fear' diagnostic categorization.

BACKGROUND: Structural models of emotional disorders propose that anxiety disorders can be classified into fear and distress disorders. Sources of evidence for this distinction come from genetic, self-report and neurophysiological data from adults. The present study examined whether this distinction relates to cognitive processes, indexed by attention bias towards threat, which is thought to cause and maintain anxiety disorders. METHOD: Diagnostic and attention bias data were analysed from 435 children between 5 and 13 years of age; 158 had principal fear disorder (specific phobia, social pho

Functional MRI of sustained attention in bipolar mania.

We examined sustained attention deficits in bipolar disorder and associated changes in brain activation assessed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We hypothesized that relative to healthy participants, those with mania or mixed mania would (1) exhibit incremental decrements in sustained attention over time, (2) overactivate brain regions required for emotional processing and (3) progressively underactivate attentional regions of prefrontal cortex. Fifty participants with manic/mixed bipolar disorder (BP group) and 34 healthy comparison subjects (HC group) received an fMRI scan w
