Dental implant research has been mostly concerned with the biocompatibility of materials for implantation. In this study the effects of titanium dioxide and other metallic salts on seven bacterial species commonly found in dental plaque, two which are uncommon, and a yeast, were determined by agar incorporation and diffusion techniques, and compared with the effects of a titanium implant abutment. Neither the titanium dioxide nor the implant abutment demonstrated any inhibitory activity, although other compounds such as cobalt used in dental alloys had some effects.

We studied whether arsenic, nickel, and chromium compounds that are human carcinogens could induce transformation of cultured primary human diploid foreskin cells (HFC). All nickel compounds tested, PbCrO4, K2Cr2O7, CrO3, Na2HAsO4, NaAsO2, and N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) caused significant (p = 0.001) dose-dependent inductions of anchorage-independent colonies in HFC. KH2AsO4, CaCl2, MnCl2, and Hg(CH3CO2)2 did not induce anchorage independence. Optimal expression times for induction of anchorage independence in HFC were observed as early as 11 days following treatment with MNNG

The distance between the two metal binding sites of human serum transferrin is calculated from measurements made of the paramagnetic broadening of the EPR spectrum of Cu2+ bound at the NH2-terminal (B) site from Fe3+ bound at the COOH-terminal (A) site. Inoculation of metallic tin powder produced marked proliferation of plasma cells and Russell body cells in draining lymph nodes. Prior, but not concurrent, administration of a soluble tin salt in the drinking water prevented the plasma cell hyperplasia. Various Na, Zn, Ag, and Cu salts were not inhibitory. The inhibitory effect of tin salts was detected as long as 2 months after the pretreatment was stopped. If the plasma cell response to metallic tin were due to an immunologic reaction, then the inhibition by a soluble tin salt may be a form of immunologic tolerance.

The effects of feeding dietary cadmium (83 micrograms/g of diet) to young pigs on the distributions of copper, iron, and zinc in urine samples and in kidney, liver, and muscle tissues was determined. The diet with added Cd resulted in renal and hepatic tissue concentrations of 42.90 +/- 10.57 micrograms/g and 7.90 +/- 2.37 micrograms/g, respectively, at the 40th day of the experiment. Fifteen patients with malignant spinal metastases underwent fixation of the spine using metallic implants and bone cement. The operation provided considerable relief of pain in all 15 cases and a significant improvement in mobility in 12 cases. These results compared favourably with 77 patients with fatal metastatic cancer of the spine who were treated without spinal surgery. The technique seems to be best indicated for use in patients with breast and thyroid cancer with a relatively prolonged terminal course.

The effects of a total of 15 metals on the activity of erythrocyte delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D) were investigated in vitro. The degree of inhibition of the ALA-D activity by copper, tin, mercury and silver was almost equal to that by lead, when the metal was added to the hemolysate of whole blood at the concentrations of 0.1 to 1.0 mmol/l in the ALA-D assay.
